Chapter 8 – There Was Information About Job Changes!

“Hmm?”

I came to the shelf related to language, but I couldn’t find anything with the same alphabet as the book we got from the treasure chest. I thought it must have been some ancient script or something used by the demons, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We’d come this far, but we had to have missed something.

Even if I couldn’t read it, I could easily tell if something used the same alphabet. I pulled the books out one by one, and flipped the pages over and over, but everything had the same familiar script.

Lusha smiled bitterly as she checked the shelves. “It seems there’s nothing here.”

Just in case, I even checked the books that were prohibited from being lent, but still nothing.

“…Maybe this book is more valuable than we could imagine?”

“Huh?” Lusha asked.

“It’s weird, isn’t it? There were books written in human and beastman languages, not to mention the demon language. Given the massive number of books in this library…”

The library was huge; it probably had around 500,000 books. It’s to the extent of being comparable in size to a large university library. And yet, there was nothing that used the alphabet from this book. If you think about it, normally that wouldn’t be possible.

“Well, you have a point… I’ve heard this library is the best in the world, so even if we went to another one…”

“The chance of us finding what we’re looking for would be even lower, wouldn’t it?”

“Yeah… that’s what I think.”

Alternatively, do they keep it in a place where ordinary people can’t see it? In that case it would be hard to find out if there’s even any material related to it. I sighed, thinking about how easy this would be if we had the Internet.

It might be worth asking if we could get an audience with the demon king. Another option is to get acquainted with the researchers or increase our information clearance by getting more recognition as adventurers. Since the perceived value of an evasion Healer is low on its own, it might be worth improving that first. [ED: sigh] Even so, recently I’ve been trying to make appearances as a Healer by supporting people.

Suddenly, I noticed several adventurers doing research at a nearby bookshelf.

“Hey, Lusha. What books do they have over there?”

“Hmm? Oh, that’s a shelf with books on how to change jobs to a superior job.”

“H~uh…”

I nodded absentmindedly, seeing that the adventurers were looking through the books with enthusiasm. I also went to the front of that bookshelf and picked up a book on how to change from a Hunter to an Archer. I couldn’t actually read the title, but it was definitely that, because the cover had a picture of a bow on it.

Lusha was getting stronger, so I thought it was about time for her to become a Hunter.

“First of all, how do you change jobs?”

“Each job has its own god, and you can change jobs in the temple where that god is enshrined.”

“A temple of a God, huh?”

It was another fantasy trope. When I handed the book to her, Lusha started reading. It described the locations where one could change jobs from Archer to Hunter, and the conditions for doing so, which were twofold: An appropriate degree of strength, and an item to present as an offering.

The strength requirement specifically meant that things like level, status, skills, talent, etc., must be above a certain amount. The correct offering to become a Hunter was a wind cut feather. The bird it came from wasn’t specified, but I was sure it must be reasonably strong.

“More to the point, isn’t the part about ‘appropriate strength’ a little too vague?”

“It is… but we can’t talk to God directly.”

“Well, yeah, but…”

I wish the job change was documented better, like if we needed a certain number of skills and a specific amount of stat points to get it. The details weren’t precisely laid down, so if you think you have to become stronger, you have no choice but to do so.

“I think you’ll be able to change jobs soon, Lusha. Where’s the temple where you can do that?”

“For Hunters, that temple is in the continent of Tangerine.”

“That’s a long way…”

I wished it had been on this Apricot continent where we were, but that wasn’t the case.

“I mean, if you don’t live nearby, it’s pretty hard to just go there, isn’t it?”

It was so hard for us to come to this continent, after all. But Lusha shook her head and said, “It really isn’t. If you’ve been an adventurer long enough to change jobs, you can afford it, and usually your party members will go with you.”

“Well, that’s true. I also want to keep up with your job change, after all.”

“Thank you very much. If I become a Hunter, my attack power will increase, and I’ll be more useful to you. That’s what I like the most about it.”

“Well then, when we’re done delivering the package, our next stop is Tangerine.”

“Yup!”

I couldn’t read the book myself, but I was able to get information about her job change to Hunter, so it was fine. There were more and more things we needed to do, and we couldn’t relax yet, but I was still pleased with the results.

“Alright, let’s find an inn for now. We’ll tour the city after that.”

“Awesome, I want to see the sights!”

We left the magic library for the day and returned to the city. Maybe because the sun was starting to set, the air was cooler than before.

“I want to stay at a good inn since we started getting used to moisture while we were clearing that dungeon. I want to get nice and clean.”

“I hear that! I’d love to get an inn with a bath!”

“Absolutely.”

Lusha had been a bather ever since she experienced baths at the inn where Ren and Ruri were staying. However, most inns don’t have separate bathrooms for each bedroom, but rather one large public bath. As you’d expect, they obviously feel private bathrooms would be a waste. If I could earn more, I’d like to have that luxury someday.

“I’m sure it would be best to find an inn between the castle and the Adventurer’s Guild.”

“Yeah, that seems the most convenient.”

Once I found a good inn, a voice called out to us from behind, and I turned around to see none other than the shop fairy.
