Chapter 9 – Pent

A baby Sea Serpent was born from an egg and attacked Rimu as fast as it could, but Rimu beat it back and said he would make it his little brother. How could this happen?

“Shaaa!”

Yeah, it keeps baring its fangs, doesn’t it? Keep that feeling as strong as it is. Oh, Rimu… Rimu approached the baby Sea Serpent, and the baby Sea Serpent retreated as if frightened.

“Wataru.”

It looks like a request to activate the Tame skill. Rimu has no intention of letting go of the baby Sea Serpent.

I’m sorry that Rimu has to threaten it to join us, but if it doesn’t join us, it will be dealt with. In the extreme, Rimu is the baby Sea Serpent’s only ally, but the baby Sea Serpent is afraid of its only ally. It’s a complicated relationship.

“Wataru.”

I wanted to stall as long as possible, but Rimu sent me his intention to move quickly. I prayed and activated my Tame skill, and a magic circle appeared in front of the baby Sea Serpent.

“Kishaaa!”

The baby Sea Serpent bared its fangs in fear at the sudden appearance of the magic circle. The baby Sea Serpent retreated backward, but Rimu jumped and got behind the baby Sea Serpent.

Well, since we had surrounded everything but the baby’s back, Rimu’s action completely blocked its escape route. When that happens, there are only two choices: attack us or accept the magic circle. I should have released the encirclement before activating the Tame skill. No, it’s not too late.

“Everyone. The baby Sea Serpent is scared, so please stand back and watch.”

“If we stop surrounding it, it will run away, won’t it?”

Alessia-san. I already think it’s okay for it to run away.

There is the problem of what if we let it escape and cause trouble for others, but I don’t know if it will cause trouble or not, and since we destroyed the Sea Serpents’ nest, there should be no reason for them to complain if we let one or more of them escape.

“Well, that’ll be that.”

I’d rather let it escape, but you know what? I feel like it would be quicker to honestly say, “Let’s let it go.”

Ah, that was useless resistance. The gap opened, and the baby Sea Serpent tried to move, but Rimu quickly blocked its escape route. It seems that the only way out for the baby Sea Serpent is to die or accept the magic circle.

“Rim. You can’t force it.”

And it is better to return it to the sea.

“It’s okay…”

Although I don’t know what’s okay, I could feel Rimu’s firm intention not to let go of it.

“Shaa…”

It tried to escape several times, but all of its initial moves were stopped by Rimu, and it was completely knocked down. It was as if it was an amateur that wasn’t allowed to do anything in front of its master.

The baby Sea Serpent accepted the magic circle without hiding its displeasure. I know how you feel, but I don’t like it either.

Well, I’ve tamed it, so if I continue to deny it, the relationship will be strained, and it won’t be good. If I’m not careful, it might even ruin my relationship with Rimu. Let’s change my mind and try my best to build a good relationship with the baby Sea Serpent.

“…Water…”

Oof. So this is the first contact after taming. I guess Sea Serpents are creatures that live in water.

Well, which kind of water is better, freshwater or seawater? …Should I prepare both?

“Ines. I’m sorry, but please get me some seawater.”

I asked Ines to fetch seawater, and I prepared fresh water.

“I don’t know which you like better, but you are free to choose.”

I placed a bucket of fresh water and a bucket of seawater in front of the baby Sea Serpent, who drank the sea water and then the freshwater without answering. Does this mean that he can drink both seawater and freshwater?

“Not enough…”

Not enough, he says. I think it’s hard to be on land at all, isn’t it? I still don’t know if I can put him in a Jacuzzi or even hot water. Should I put him in the ocean? …He’s still a baby, and he may need food as well as water. I’d like to hear what he has to say.

For the first time in a long time, I summoned the bath boat and, with everyone’s help, filled it with seawater.

“You can go in.”

I said, and the baby Sea Serpent slid into the seawater bath. The baby Sea Serpent swam around in the bath, probably because the sea water felt so good. Even though he was just born, he seemed to have a simple knowledge of how to swim.

He seems happy, and I guess we can assume that he’s settled down for the time being. Hmm, I had a feeling this would happen when Rimu said he would be his little brother, but I ended up taming him. I had no intention of taming anyone but Slime, so I’m not sure what I’m going to do now.

Well, Rimu is happily watching over the baby Sea Serpent at the edge of the bathtub, so I trust that it won’t be bad.

“Master. What are you going to call this child?”

Oh, Felicia is right; I have to give him a name now that I’ve tamed him. Hmm, should I leave it to Rimu?

No, if it’s a good name, it’s fine, but if he comes up with a crazy name, I’ll be embarrassed when I register him. It would be safer to come up with a name myself.

“I’ll think of a name for him.”

…I’ve thought a lot, but a simple name has stuck in my head and won’t go away. Let’s just say it’s easy to understand.

“Your name is Pent. Nice to meet you.” [T/n: Pent from Serpent, lol.]

I talk to the baby Sea Serpent swimming around in the bathtub. Ines is behind me and says something like, “Pfft, simple,” but I don’t care.

“…Pent…?”

Perhaps realizing that I was talking to him, Pent emerges from the seawater and sends his intentions. He looks slightly traumatized because his body reacts with a jerk when he notices Rimu watching over the edge of the tub.

“Yes. That’s your name.”

“…Okay…”

Maybe it’s because he’s just been born, but the words that come out of his mouth seem to falter. I’m a little worried about what this child will be like when he grows up. I feel like he’s going to send his intentions in a heavy bass tone.

Oh yes. Let’s check Pent’s status.

Name: Pent

Race: Sea Serpent

Age: 0

Occupation: Wataru’s familiar

Level: 1

Physical Strength: 68
Magic Power: 60
Strength: 35
Intelligence: 20
Dexterity: 5
Luck: 8

Skills:
Water Magic Level 1
Water Breath

Hmm. Compared to Rimu, his stats are higher on average. The low points are Dexterity and Luck. Apart from his Dexterity, his Luck is lower than mine, which brings tears to my eyes. No wonder he was beaten to a pulp right after he was born.

But since all the other Sea Serpents have been killed, I think this child who survived is lucky… Could it be that being tamed by me is worse luck than being killed? When you think about it, this lucky status is rude.

Well, I’ve named him and checked his status. We can take a leisurely break and “…Hungry…”

I see, you’re hungry. What should I feed him? He’s just been born, so milk?

***

After a lot of things, the break was over, and we finally resumed our exploration. As for Pent’s food, I offered him a variety of foods to choose from, from milk to dishes, and he bit into the raw meat.

He didn’t pay any attention to the milk or the dishes, so I guess he really likes raw meat. When he grows up, he will probably eat the monsters there by himself, but until he grows up, it would be better to prepare meat for him. Well, when we go out to the open sea, the monsters will come by on their own, so getting the food won’t be a problem.

“Fufu… Master. That child looks like he’s having a good time swimming.”

“You mean Pent? Yes, he looks like he’s having fun, but is he going to be okay?”

He wants to swim, so I let him swim, but there is still a possibility that the Sea Serpent is still around, but won’t he get into a fight or get eaten? It’s possible they won’t attack him because he’s one of their own, but it’s also possible they’ll perceive him as an enemy because he’s been tamed.

“You didn’t seem to want to tame him, but you were worried about him. We taught him to stay close to the Egg No. 1 so he would have time to escape here in case of an emergency.”

“He’s a Sea Serpent, after all. I can’t just casually tame a sea serpent when I know how big he’s going to get. But I’m responsible for him, and if something happens to him, Rimu will be sad, so it’s natural for me to worry about him.”

However, when Rimu tries to get close to Pent, he is afraid of him. I’m sure he’ll get used to Rimu eventually because he keeps communicating without giving up, but he’ll have a hard time… with the trauma that was etched into his mind the moment he was born.

In addition, he was afraid of Fuu-chan and Beni-chan when they tried to approach him, so there is a high possibility that he was traumatized by the Slime itself. Well, Fuu-chan and Beni-chan are much stronger than him, so it’s not wrong for him to be wary of them.

“Fufu. You’re not that honest, are you?”

Huh? Why is Felicia looking at me so warmly? Ines, you don’t think I’m naive, that I’m some kind of tsundere, do you?

“Master. The Egg No. 3 has turned.”

Oops, I didn’t look ahead. First, I’m going to turn, and then the misunderstanding…

“Egg No. 3 here, it’s Dorothea. We found a door that looks like a treasure room.”

No. It’s good news, but the timing feels bad. I want to clear up the misunderstanding as soon as possible since the man is suspected of being a Tsundere, and who knows what else…

“This is Egg No.1. Got it. Hmm? A door? There is still a door?”

All the doors in the Duke’s castle we’ve been through so far have fallen apart, right?

“The doors are still in good condition. Maybe the door itself is protected because it is an important place.”

Come to think of it, the magic ship that was excavated was protected by magic; that’s why it’s still there, right? If it’s an important part of the castle, it should be protected, right?

“Master. I think it would be faster to see it than to ask.”

I wanted to continue with my question, but Felicia gave me a reasonable answer. That’s right. Let’s hurry… It’s a little frustrating when we can’t speed up at times like this.

As I turn the corner, I see the lights of the Egg No. 3 a little further down the passage, and in the light of the lights shines a magnificent doorway. Considering its magnificence, it’s quite possible that this is a treasure room.

…Huh? How do you open this door? As expected, it’s locked, right?
