Chapter 7 – Day 6 of Living in the Demonic Land
When I woke up the next morning, I checked the traps around the house and found five wild boars and five gibi deer. I hung them in a tree and dismantled them, which didn’t take long because I was used to it.
I dug out the ground and made a special smokehouse. I would be able to smoke them around noon. I grilled the leftover meat and had breakfast.
“I really need to eat some vegetables…”
My body craved vegetables.
There are nuts and leaves in the demon land that are edible, but I feed them to the forest rats I catch; I only eat them if they seem okay after a day, but they are hard to find at first, probably because I am not used to the plants in the demon land yet. There are plenty of plants that try to eat me, though.
I also look at P.J.’s notebook, and if it says something is edible, I try to eat it anyway. However, I wonder if my stomach is different from P.J.’s since I have had an upset stomach since last night. I wonder if I should boil it or something.
“I never thought about the lack of vegetables when I was at my parents’ house.”
The farmers grew their own vegetables in their own homes, and the neighbors were also very friendly, so I never had to worry about vegetables. In fact, they grew so many that the family couldn’t eat them all, so we would go and share them with the neighbors.
But now I don’t have enough vegetables. My hands and lips are cracked. I don’t have enough food.
“I guess I’ll have to go buy some.”
Even if I went to the nearest town, it would take three days to get to the highway and then another full day to get to the military training area.
It would be better if I could barter at the training facility, but if not, I would have to go further.
It would be better to allow 10 or even 12 days for the round trip.
There are no specialties yet, but I have collected a considerable amount of smoked meat and magic stones. With this as a starting point, I would like to buy vegetable seeds and wheat for the time being.
While I was thinking about my future plans, I saw a green tiger coming this way. It stopped moving, perhaps noticing my gaze.
Without taking my eyes off the green tiger, I drew my axe closer to it. With that, the green tiger ran away. Even wild monsters hunt with consideration for their stomachs and the injuries they might sustain in a fight.
I should think more about what I’m doing.
I use my memory too much for my dreams, so I need paper and charcoal. I feel that if I don’t draw a map, I’ll get lost and won’t be able to get to the far end of the demonic land. I’ve generally gotten better at dealing with the approaching monsters, but I still can’t get beyond the swamp.
I decided to throw a sleeping potion soaked in egg mushrooms or swimming flowers at the wild bear and the green tiger, and when they got stuck, I hit them on the head with an axe and hit the haze turtle to drive them back. Preparation is important in everything.
In the morning, I cut through the forest near the water and made a field. My hoe was broken by slime, but I made an improvised hoe by hardening palm sap into a square shape.
“As long as I don’t use too much force, I might be able to use this for a long time.”
I thought so, but when I put it near the stone kiln, the blade melted. It is very weak to heat. It would be better to cool it down enough or mix it with something.
After lunch, I checked the smoked meat in the smokehouse. I decided to take only the smoked meat that looked good. I packed my bag and went to the entrance of the demonic land.
As I double-checked my surroundings, I reached the floating flower colony before dusk. Maybe it was because the path was familiar to me, but I felt like I got there very quickly.
I took the opportunity to collect some floating flowers while spreading the monster’s blood. I dug a hole by the river, filled it with water, and soaked the floating flowers. By the time I return, I will have made a powerful sleeping potion.
On the way across the river that separates the forest from the demonic land, I encountered a slime, but since I had been hunting it for a while, it didn’t come very close to me.
“Do they remember my scent? I don’t see a nose on a slime, but…”
When I crossed the river and entered the forest, I didn’t encounter any monsters that attacked me particularly.
“I was so cautious before.
If I show my caution, the monsters might feel my tension.
I walked down the road, relying on my memory.
I marked a prominent tree in case I got lost.
I hear the sound of a monster bird, but I’m so used to it that I wonder if I can eat the bird.
On the way, I found a nest of vespa hornets, a bee monster, but there were so many of them that I quietly walked past them.
I thought I had walked far enough to not get tired, but as the sun set, I could see the road to the city.
“It was surprisingly fast.”
The trip I had planned to take three days had been completed in half a day. I realized that I was constantly changing.
“Maybe I can even become a guard… No, I don’t think I could live a normal life.”
Instead of tents, I made roofs out of tree branches and leaves. Unlike the demonic land, the trees in the forest do not attack humans or monsters, so it is safe.
“All I need is shelter from the rain.”
I roasted some smoked meat and prepared dinner. I heard birds chirping in the distance, but I didn’t care.
I laid the gibi deer skin on the ground and fell asleep.
My stomach was already feeling better.

“The farmers grew their own vegetables in their own homes,”
Seriously? Not in their fields or gardens, but homes?

Maybe on rooftops. You know, so-called “green roofs.” Unless they lived in burrows, like Hobbits. 😀
P.S. This novel is so stupid that it’s starting to be funny. I think I’ll keep reading it, just for a laugh.
