Chapter 11 – Day 10 of Living in the Demonic Land

I couldn’t sleep at all because of my nap, and all the time, I was sharpening the upper fangs of the king anaconda. I made one into a harpoon and the other into a saber. I tried to take advantage of its elastic and hard qualities.

When I went outside and swung it around, I found that I could cut tree branches and insect monsters with ease. From now on, I will use this saber instead of an axe to kill monsters.

“Gyoeeeeeeeeee!”

I hear the screams of monsters from far away.

It’s the voice I’ve been hearing since the first day I was in the demonic land, but I don’t know what it is.

I thought I might be able to handle it if I walked carefully. Since my level seemed to have increased, I tried to make my way through the forest of the demonic land where the sun had not yet risen.

I soon got lost and regretted it. I realized how much I rely on my eyes in my daily life.

I sharpened my senses and prepared for the unexpected attacks of the monsters, and after five minutes of this, I felt quite exhausted.

However, after repeating the exercise over and over again, my eyes became accustomed to the darkness, and I felt that the degree of fatigue decreased.

When I hear a sound, I swing my sword in that direction. Most of the time, the plants in the demonic land were attacking me and targeting me. I had to be more vigilant against the plants than the monsters in this demonic land, so I didn’t have time to relax.

I think I naturally learned how to swing and thrust the saber by using it in the shortest and fastest way. It was completely my own style, or maybe it was the style of the demonic land. I aim at the roots of the plant. If it was a monster, I would aim at its waist or knees, the starting point of its movement.

I realized that I could handle any enemy that came at me.

Anyway, I headed towards the sound of the waves in the swamp where I could find the way.

“Gyoeeeeeeeeee!!!”

The screams got closer, but I didn’t think to try to find out who it was. By the time I reached the swamp, I was able to assess my surroundings within a radius of about five meters. Somehow.

I like to think it was not for nothing.

From the swamp, I could hear what sounded like people talking in hushed tones.

Who on earth would be in such a demonic land?

Wait a minute.

Since I am the current owner of this demonic land, do I have to kick them out?

I hadn’t thought about it, thinking that no one would want to enter this demonic land, but it might be possible for a strange adventurer to do so.

In any case, I should tell them that they are trespassing, and if they don’t leave, I should tell them that they can stay if they want to.

I have no desire to fight with a human.

“Excuse me! Um…”

What I saw as I ran out of the forest was a monster with the upper body of a human woman and the lower body of a snake.

It was a pack of lamia. They’re dumb monsters who ate meat with a vespa hornet’s poison needle in it when I first came to the demonic land, but I can’t let my guard down when they move. If I make eye contact with it, it will petrify me.

“Shaoooo~!”

“Raorrrrrrrrrr~”

A group of lamia danced in the moonlight.

Noticing me, the lamia took up a fighting stance.

I wondered if they had come to avenge the death of the king anaconda since they were all snake monsters.

My eyes were on the shadows on the ground. Thank goodness it was a moonlit night.

I easily cut off the attacking lamia’s tail with my saber, and then I stabbed it where I thought its heart and neck might be.

Once I have killed one, I keep my distance and wait for another to attack.

If I get impatient and raise my eyes, they will petrify me.

The lamia, growing impatient, attacked all at once.

I didn’t care what I was doing; I just kept slashing in the direction of the approaching shadows.

After killing about eight of them, I regretted not counting the number of enemies.

I didn’t see or hear any more attacks, but if I raised my eyes at this point and was petrified, it would be my end. It was not as if my companions were there to heal me from petrifaction.

First, I decided to run into the forest and hide behind the grass.

As I expected, a lone lamia chased me, so I swung my sword at it.

Swosh!

I sent its head flying.

I hid in the shadows of the grass until dawn in case there were more of them, not returning home until the sky had cleared.

Maybe it was because I was so nervous, but I fell asleep as soon as I got home.

Around noon, I crawled out of bed and ate turtle soup and stir-fried meat and vegetables.

The turtle soup I made yesterday did not go sour, and it tasted good all the time.

When I went to check on the field, I found that the bendgrass had grown too big.

I cut off the leaves so that the ground could get some sunlight, but it was growing too fast.

Protected by the bendgrass, some of the vegetable seeds I had exchanged at the military facility had sprouted, and some of them had turned into double leaves.

I fetched water from the swamp and watered them. The razor grass grew as usual, and I cut it down. Even though I was wearing gloves, the cloth would tear, so I needed leather gloves.

I’ll use the razor grass I cut as practice for my throwing knife.

The stakes may not mean much, but there was a wild boar on the pit.

I cut it up and smoke it. The guts are thrown into the swamp.

Schools of fish have become a common attraction. I should start a fish farm.

I went to see the lamia corpses last night.

A bird monster, the death condor, was pecking at them. Another lizard-like sub-dragon monster swallowed the whole body.

The death condor was a monster that used instant death magic, I think. The lizard is probably a kodomo dragon. [T/n: Yes, it’s kodomo, not komodo, probably a pun, since it can also be translated as “child”].

Since they are called “kodomo” with a size like a cow, I wonder how big a normal dragon is. I have heard many stories. There are rumors that they are as big as mountains and that the continent that once existed was made up of dragon corpses. Adventurers are full of imagination.

The king anaconda’s breastplate would prevent even instant death magic.

I slapped the breastplate and jumped in front of the monsters, slashing them one by one with my sword.

Unlike the axe, the saber was light. The sharpness of the saber does not diminish. Before the death condor could fly away, I sent its head flying. The battle ended with a thrust right between the kodomo dragon’s eyes.

It took less than a minute to defeat them all. Since it was near the entrance to the demonic land, the monsters must have been weak; even P.J.’s notebook considered them ‘small fry.’

My knife broke while I was dismantling it. It seemed that I had used it too much in the dismantling process.

Anyway, I collected the magic stone, including that of lamia, and returned home.

As I had done with the axe, I made a mold for the knife and poured palm leaf resin into it. A good knife should be ready by tomorrow.

In fact, the axe is still very useful.

Since I went to the trouble of making several knives, including spares and different shapes, I’m going to make more knives. The dismantling process is far more time-consuming than the fighting.

Meanwhile, I prepare food.

I think it would be better to have a group of friends with me so I can share the workload.

As in the battle with lamia last night, I am beginning to feel the need for company.

  1. “Even though I was wearing gloves, the cloth would tear, so I needed leather gloves.”

Or maybe snakeskin gloves? Or are lamias too humanlike to have their parts harvested?

  2. “The king anaconda’s breastplate would prevent even instant death magic.”

But not the petrifying gaze from the night before? Amazing confidence that there aren’t any instant death effects targeting something unprotected by that breastplate. He’s as smart as a slime, I’d say.

    1. It’s interesting that the breastplate protected against sudden death magic, but couldn’t do the same with petrification. Does the author think his readers are idiots? I recently gave up on the Chinese novel “Reborn as Energy with a System.” I thought that novel was terrible. But this one wins by a mile.
