Chapter 12 – Day 11 of Living in the Demonic Land

Yesterday, I felt sleepy after eating dinner, so I went to bed. I woke up after midnight, and the rhythm of my life shifted more and more. The knife is all hardened and looks good. I will sharpen it and use it right away.

I was feeding the experimental forest rat with a plant from the demonic land, and it gave birth to some babies. Since there were six more at once, I decided to divide them into three groups for experiments: one for poison, one for a sleeping potion, and one for a paralyzing drug.

While the sun was still up, I collected the meat from yesterday’s death condor and kodomo dragon. I buried lamia’s corpse in the ground. It was quite decomposed, and I can’t help but feel repelled by its human-like appearance.

I think I’ll go a little farther today. At dawn, I will go to the other side of the swamp.

I will need to know approximately how far is my land. I never know when a strong adventurer will come and take my land away from me.

In order to make a map, I carry paper and charcoal in my backpack.

According to the real estate agent, it was supposed to be all my land from the river, which is the entrance to the demonic land. Perhaps there are still unknown peoples beyond this point, or perhaps there is a tribe that is believed to be lost, living in hiding.

As the owner of the land, I have to collect rent. I’ve heard that passive income is the best, but if I don’t take it gently at first, they won’t stay.

“I can see a mountain range in the distance, does that mean it’s my land too?”

Mapping is important to resolve such questions.

Climbing the hill on the other side of the swamp, I could see the surrounding forest. Adjacent to the swamp, there is another swamp, but it is dimly lit by dense foliage.

For now, I decided to walk toward the mountain range.

I’ll head back when it’s noon. As long as I return before the sun goes down, I will be fine. That was the plan.

As I walked along, I noticed a number of trees with fruits that I had never seen before. As I approached, the fruit cracked open and bit me with its sharp fangs.

I cut off the fruit and harvested it for forest rats. Even after cutting them off, they kept trying to bite me for a while, so I tied them up with vines from around the area.

I named them cam fruits. There were other fruits that were bites in different colors and shapes, but I named them all cam fruits.

The one with the big biting flower was named rafflesia. I could have named them cam flowers, but I named them after something that was as close as possible based on my dream memories from a previous life.

I also named the small, tree-fairy-like monster imp. Its body is human-like, but it has wings and an old man’s face.

“It’s too weird… what a terrible combination.”

It didn’t particularly disturb me or attack me, so I went through with it.

There was also a bipedal lizard. In a dream from my previous life, I believe, it was a type of monster called a dinosaur. It was about the same size as a green tiger, and in P.J.’s notebook, it was named maeshitsukawazu. The description of this creature was “a goofball who walks without using its front legs,” which makes me wonder about P.J.’s sense of humor.

It tried to bite me, so I stabbed it once in the neck with my saber.

I dismantled it with the knife I made yesterday. Using a knife with a jagged, sawed-off blade, I sliced through the scales of the maeshitsukawazu.

“It’s so sharp.”

The entrails were processed by feeding them to rufflesia. The way it ate was so dirty that it spread mucus around the area. The smell is terrible. I’ll wash myself in the swamp when I get back.

I stopped every time I saw a new plant or a monster, sketching and naming it, so it was soon noon. For lunch, I barbecued the meat of the maeashitsukawazu.

The meat from maeashitsukawazu was the best I’ve ever tasted.
I made sure to collect the claws and magic stones and took as much meat as I could.

The imps came close by, and when they found the extra meat, they shouted and called for their friends.

“Gyoeeeeeeee!”

It was the imp’s cry. I thought it was a monster bird, but I had no idea it was coming from such a strange little old man fairy. I was no longer afraid at all.

“Should I tame the imp and make it my companion?”

When I asked the imp, it replied, “Gyoe?” It sounded like an old man who had been poisoned by alcohol.

“I guess that’s impossible unless I get really lonely.”

What could be so sad that I have to make friends with such a strange monster?

I threw the meat of the maeashitsukawazu into the forest and drove the imps away.

I ate lunch and headed home. I didn’t make it to the mountain range at all.

“It didn’t even feel like I was getting close. How much preparation would it take to get there?”

I would probably spend several nights to get to the mountain range, so I would need to prepare a tent and some preserved food. The monsters and plants would be different, just a little bit beyond the swamp, so there would be a lot of unknowns.

“That’s going to take a while.”

At home, I fed the forest rats some cam fruits, and they devoured them. Maybe it was their favorite food. I ate one myself, and it was no different than any other sweet and sour fruit. Except for the biting, it was just an ordinary fruit.

For dinner, I had king anaconda steak and stir-fried vegetables.

“It’s as refreshing as ever. Delicious!”

After dinner, while washing myself in the swamp, I was attacked by a swarm of small insect monsters. I had to make a repellent against them. When I built a bonfire, they stopped coming near me.

I was reading P.J.’s notebook, and naturally, sleep came to me. I went to sleep before the sun went down.

I’d like to sell a bridge to that guy. Or city walls.
