Chapter 19 – Day 18 of Living in the Demonic Land

“Achoo!”

As I expected, Cher caught a cold.

The rocky area was windy and cold at night. To get home as quickly as possible, I took as little luggage as possible and carried Cher on my back. With snot dripping down my back, Cher, who stuck out her tongue and thanked me, looked like a complete idiot.

Using magic to run, I was able to enter the forest in the morning. On the way, I picked up some vines and tied Cher and me tightly together. That way, we won’t fall down easily.

In the forest, we were surrounded by many insect-like monsters. I killed them all with my saber, but there were so many of them. I just collected the magic stones and went on.

Sometimes, there were monsters with magic stones in strange places, but Cher would tell me where they were.

Whether it was because she was a demon or because she could sense the flow of magic, I don’t know, but it seemed like Cher could tell where the magic stones were.

I gathered some cam fruit and tried to give it to Cher on my back.

“Munch, munch…”

Her eyes were unfocused, but perhaps because she knew instinctively that she had to eat, she devoured the cam fruits right out of my hand.

“With an appetite like that, you’ll be fine.”

After eating the fruit, Cher fell asleep on my back.

I ran south without stopping. I tried not to think about anything but running, and I kept running away from the monsters.

After lunch, I could see a swamp in the distance.

Once I knew where it was, I made my way to the cave without hesitation.

When I arrived at my cave home, I put Cher to bed and covered her with a wild bear pelt.

I soaked a cloth in water and placed it on her head, and Cher slowly began to breathe.

I must be careful not to catch a cold myself. I quickly changed my clothes, which were now covered in snot, and washed them.

I filled a pot with water and heated it over a low flame. I tried to keep it from drying out as much as possible and then fed the Forest Rats.

Again, I think the female’s belly is getting bigger.

“Hey, you guys are having kids too fast, you know? You should think a little more about family planning.”

I scratched the male’s chin, and it fell asleep, looking tired.

I went to the field, pulled out the weeds, and watered the plants. The vegetables began to grow, and I was happy to see the results.

I also thought of a way to catch fish in the swamp. Using the flesh of a monster as bait, I would lure them in and trap them in a bubble of water created by magic. This was the same magic Cher had used on the wyvern. If I brought them back as they were, I would get fresh fish, but my magic wasn’t good enough to make a water bubble that well.

“Well, it doesn’t have to be that fresh.”

As usual, I killed the fish that swarmed around the bait and threw them to shore.

It was the easiest and quickest way.

Now that I had learned magic, I could make fire without fail if I took my time.

I had struggled to make a small fire, but now that I understood how to use magic, I could adjust the power of the fire, and by combining magic, I might be able to make hot water in an instant.

With this in mind, I used earth magic to create a stone wall around the edge of the swamp. I combined water magic and fire magic to create boiling water. I had created a small bathtub.

“I think this is about right. It’s just the right temperature.”

While I was enjoying the bath, a monster that looked like a boiled crayfish floated up. I’ll feed it to Forest Rat later.

When I got out of the bath and went home, Cher had a high fever. Since I didn’t have any cold medicine, I gave her some leaves that Forest Rats often eat and some cam berries, but there was no sign that she was getting better.

While changing the cloth on her head, I looked in P.J.’s notebook to see if there was anything written.

Imp: A humanoid fairy monster. The male Imp has a face like an old man, but the female Imp has a more finely chiseled face.

Effect of the magic stone: Cold medicine

“This is it!”

I rushed to the other side of the swamp and ran in the direction of the “Gyoeee!” cry. As long as I could see it, I could kill it. I killed it instantly with my saber.

As I was pulling the magic stone out of the Imp’s body, it appeared.

“Damn, just when I need it!”

The old tree monster, Treant. I don’t have time to deal with it now, but it would be annoying if it attacked me in the future. I tried to hit it with a fist filled with magical power, and the branch on its arm snapped with a crack.

The Treant stopped moving when it saw its broken branch.

“This should work!”

I stomped on the roots with the magic power in my feet and struck the trunk with my fist imbued with fire magic, and the leaves began to fall. The leaves fell like a blizzard.

Was that the signal? A shrill sound came from everywhere. If I didn’t cover my ears with my hands, I would go crazy.

“Is that a Mandragora?!”

The sound attack made me fall to my knees, unable to do anything but fall to the ground.

By the time the screeching had subsided, Treant was gone.

“This is the demonic land’s secret weapon. This is no time to deal with something like that.”

Anyway, I took the Imp’s magic stone and left the area.

When I got home, I let Cher hold the magic stone of the Imp. As I focused my magic power into Cher’s hands, she took a deep breath.

She inhaled as much as she could, then coughed and exhaled, and a black mist came out of her mouth.

Is that a cold? I shook the mist off with a damp cloth.

The cloth turned completely black, but Cher’s condition was improving by the minute.

I burned the cloth outside and turned it into charcoal.

I felt reassured by the fact that Cher was sleeping peacefully, and after a while, I also fell asleep.
