Chapter 26 – Day 25 of Living in the Demonic Land
The next day.
“Gyaaah! There’s a demon! There’s a demon!”
Jennifer yelled as she ran into my room.
“You promised to forget what you saw here, right?”
I went outside to fix my bed hair and found Cher baking bread.
“Makyo, bread!”
Cher looked at the baking with a happy expression.
“Yeah, I’m going to water the fields.”
“Hey, hey, hey! Um, Makyo-san?”
Jennifer followed me.
“What is it, Jennifer?”
“There’s a demon here.”
“So what? She drifted ashore on the east coast. I thought I’d build her a boat and send her home. In demonic land, Cher is the senior, so you should respect her and get along with her.”
“But… she’s an enemy, right? If she’s found, the guards will take her away.”
“Enemy? That was over a hundred years ago. Haven’t you heard that we’re not at war? The church says we should help people in need. What’s the problem?”
“That’s true, but… there’s no advantage to helping her, is there?”
“She teaches me magic in exchange for rent. I’ve become quite good at it.”
I said, using magic to create a stream in the swamp to irrigate the fields. The bendgrass seems to have eaten another monster, and it’s grown bigger. I also cut down the razor grass.
Jennifer just watched the scene in silence.
“Jennifer, you better pay your rent on time. This is my private land, and I’ll kick out anyone who can’t pay the rent.”
“I have money! Here are ten gold coins! How about a one-month stay?”
Before I could ask for the rent, the tenant had already mentioned the amount. She said she would give me ten gold coins if I let her stay for a month on the land I bought for five gold coins.
“That’s fine.”
Maybe Jennifer really is stupid.
“Here you go.”
Jennifer handed me a piece of paper with a check written on it.
“No, this isn’t gold, is it?”
“But it’s worth 10 gold coins.”
“That won’t do.”
“Hah~ This is something you would expect from someone from the countryside… This is normal in the capital. You don’t need to carry around gold coins, do you? If you take this and go to a money changer, they will exchange it for gold coins for you.”
“But this is not the capital, and there are no money changers…”
Jennifer began to get angry and said, “I understand!”
“If you want me to work, I’ll work! Washing dishes? Collect firewood? Or maybe I’ll be a companion at night? I’ll do anything! One day I’ll be the leader here and take revenge on them!”
She gets angry easily when she doesn’t get her way, so she’s still a bit dangerous. If possible, I’d like her to leave.
“Okay, fine! This isn’t the place for you. Please leave.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“No, this is my land. You seem like a dangerous person, and you were beaten by the slime at the entrance, so you can’t do well in this land. Please leave.”
“W-what are you angry about? Did I say something rude?”
“Yes, I now understand why you were kicked out of the party. You don’t listen to other people. You think everyone will do what you want, don’t you? Unfortunately, reality is not that simple.”
Jennifer’s face turned bright red, and she went back into the cave and started packing her things.
I watched her go in silence.
“Makyo, bread!”
“Yes.”
When Cher saw Jennifer leave the cave, she asked, “Is she coming back?”
“Yes. She was banished and came here to take revenge. She doesn’t belong here. She should start over in the capital.”
“Hmph.”
I wonder if she understood my explanation. Cher waved to Jennifer and said, “See you later!”
Jennifer went to the entrance of the demonic land.
“Maybe she will become the living dead.”
“Yeah.”
“Maybe they’ll find out you’re here and the guards will come. If they do, run away.”
“Yes.”
It is strange. I can’t believe that the demon tribe that doesn’t speak the language can communicate better.
After a big breakfast, we continued from yesterday and repeated the process of “catching and releasing monsters” to find the direction in the desert.
We defeated the monsters that didn’t return to their nests and came towards us.
When the number of magic stones from the defeated monsters had accumulated to the size of a small hill, I caught a leafbird, a tiny bird-like monster, and released it. I had not paid much attention to this monster because it had never attacked me before.
I decided to experiment to see how far the leafbird would fly back.
“It is the right size and fits perfectly into its natural habitat.”
The leafbird is very small, small enough to fit in your pocket, and it falls asleep as soon as you put it in a dark place.
When I took it to the forest near the desert and released it, it flew high into the sky and headed north.
“The experiment was a success.”
“A success.”
I decided to make a nest for the leafbird above the cave in my house and catch lots of leafbirds. Leafbirds don’t just eat leaves; it seems they prefer to eat the larvae of insect-like monsters.
I wonder what’s wrong with leafbirds that eat prey the size of their own bodies, but I can’t do anything about it because they eat. Besides, they fall asleep as soon as they’ve eaten. They were also easy to catch.
After lunch, I put the leafbirds in my bag and headed for the desert.
In the desert, I defeated more and more sandworms. When the demonic land forest disappeared from view, I completely lost my sense of direction.
“”Hah, hah.””
When you lose your sense of direction, you suddenly get tired. I never knew that not knowing where you are could be so tiring.
Anyway, I kept running, but the sandstorm was so bad that I couldn’t make much progress.
When a sandstorm occurs, I use earth magic to harden the ground and make a simple sand igloo. After waiting for the storm to pass, I dug a hole in the ceiling and ran around the area again.
After defeating dozens of sandworms, I spotted a cloud in the distance that didn’t seem to be moving.
“What is that?”
“Hmm… a bird?”
Cher said, tilting her head. As we got closer, we could see that a chain stretched from the cloud down to the ground. The cloud also seemed to have a solid substance.
“Have you ever seen anything like this before?”
“No, no, no. Never seen it before!”
Cher and I both said as we looked up.
The island was floating in the sky, surrounded by thin clouds. The chain was made up of pieces as long as sandworms and was firmly attached to the ground.
The ruins drawn in P.J.’s notebook seemed to be there.
If we climbed up the chain, we could probably reach the island, but the sun was already setting.
“Let’s go back first.”
“Yeah.”
I took the leafbird out of my pocket and released it.
The leafbird flew high into the sky, circled around, and then took off to the north. We followed it so we wouldn’t lose sight of it.
We made it home safely, but I felt like I was still in a state of wonder at the existence of the island floating in the sky.
Even Cher was unusually preoccupied as she baked the bread for dinner.
We were talking about making sure we were well prepared for tomorrow and trying to get to the island floating in the sky, and then Cher pointed to something in the forest.
“Hey, look!”
I could see the light of a magic stone lantern in the dark forest.
As I approached the light, I found Jennifer lying there in tatters. Her clothes were torn, her hair was disheveled, she had many scratches that looked like she’d been scratched by a monster, and her right leg was bent in an unnatural direction, but she was still breathing.
“Huh, I guess I’ll let her stay another night.”
I said and took Jennifer in my arms.
“Ushishishi. You’re so kind.”
“I’m not that kind. I’d just be in trouble if she died.”
I put Jennifer to bed, and then we had another meeting about tomorrow before I went to sleep.
Just before I went to sleep, I read P.J.’s notebook, but there was no mention of an island floating in the sky.
