Chapter 27 – Day 26 of Living in the Demonic Land

The next day, Jennifer was still sleeping.

Cher had put her broken leg back together and cast a healing spell, so it should be healed by now.

I watered the crops in the field, had breakfast with Cher, and prepared some food for Jennifer.

I left a note saying, ‘Be careful on your way home,’ and headed for the desert.

In my bag was a leafbird compass.

As we ran through the forest, we were attacked by both plants and monsters, but they were all things we had seen before. Poison Scorpions aren’t scary when you cut off their tails. In the morning, both plants and monsters move slowly, so even if they attack you, you can easily dodge them. It takes time to defeat them one by one, so we just ignored most of the monsters.

In the morning, we ended up in the desert. With P.J.’s sword, the sandworms were no longer such a formidable enemy. Sand Coyotes, Desert Salamanders, and other desert-specific monsters appeared as well, but I was able to defeat them with a single blow using my magic fists filled with magical power.

“I wonder if I’m getting stronger.”

“Not yet.”

As Cher had said, when I checked P.J.’s notebook, it said, “The monsters of the desert are weak.” However, there was a note that said, “Never touch the poisonous plants.”

“But I don’t see any plants…”

“Yes…”

I ignored P.J.’s notebook for now and hurried on.

The biggest problem was the sandstorm, but the wind was light in the morning, so it wasn’t too bad. We just wrapped a cloth around our faces to deal with it, but it was effective.

“Hehehe…”

Cher looked a little tired, but she didn’t drink much water. She said that drinking too much water would make her even more tired. She didn’t eat much breakfast either, but I think I understand that eating takes energy from your internal organs.

It was around noon when we arrived just below the island that floats in the sky.

All that remains is to climb the metal chain connected to the island in the sky. I don’t know what kind of metal it is, but it doesn’t look like it will come loose even after two people have climbed it.

After eating some of Cher’s special sandwiches, we started to climb up the chain. It wasn’t like walking, but it was about the same speed as climbing a tree.

As I climbed, I began to feel that the island was too far away. My arms, abs, and leg muscles were screaming, so we took many breaks. Cher tried to levitate herself with wind magic, but it didn’t seem to work. The metal of the chains was special, and the wind magic was repelled.

“Sorry.”

While helping Cher, who was about to fall, we kept aiming higher and higher.

Whoosh!

After using the wind magic, a sandstorm always came.

“Damn it, hold on!”

When the sandstorm came, we had to wait for it to stop, so it took even longer.

“Don’t do it again!”

“I won’t!”

My arms were exhausted. I thought I’d trained them well in the demonic land, but they were no match at all.

Besides, when the sweat mixed with the sand and our skin became sticky, we both became irritated.

Halfway through, I discovered that we could make progress if we didn’t use wind magic but instead used magic to cover our bodies and put magic into our hands and legs so that they would stick to the chains. I taught this to Cher as well.

“Wow!”

We were both excited but soon realized this method was dangerous.

There was something strange about it, so we looked closely at the flow of magic power and saw that it was being absorbed by the chains.

“This is no good!”

“Let’s not do it!”

Cher warned me.

It seems that the ropes are designed to make it impossible to cheat with magic or magic power. I don’t know if they were designed to be used against mages or just to prevent monsters from climbing up, but it looks like we have no choice but to climb up on our own.

Since Cher was almost knocked unconscious by the sandstorm and I was having trouble regaining my strength, we tied ourselves together with the rope. Had I been alone, I probably would have fallen and been buried in the desert.

When the sandstorm finally stopped for the umpteenth time, and the sky turned auburn, we could finally see the island clearly.

“We’re almost there!”

“Almost there!”

When we finally reached the top, the first star was shining in the eastern sky.

There were no clouds around the island, and we could even see the distant mountain range to the north. If we went to the other side of the island, we might be able to see the cliffs or the southern edge of the demonic land.

The sky island was full of trees, and small, colorful flowers were blooming. There was a village, and several brick houses were half destroyed. A large tree was growing through one of the houses.

It seemed that the people had disappeared long ago.

My whole body was tired and hot, but as I slowly breathed in the cool air, the sweat gradually disappeared.

Since it was getting dark as we walked around the island, we decided to sleep in the half-destroyed house for the night. There were only small birds and squirrel-like creatures, so we didn’t think we would be attacked.

Since we hadn’t eaten much today, we ate a lot of dried meat and leftover sandwiches.

“This is delicious!”

“Delicious!”

We were both tired, so the salty food went down well.

There was nothing to do, so we lay down, but it was very cold. That’s to be expected since we were at the same altitude as the mountain.

I broke off a branch and made a fire, but it didn’t burn very well. I didn’t realize it, but the oxygen must have been thin.

There was nothing I could do, so we decided to sleep together.

“Don’t do it!”

“No way! I’m just wasting my energy here.”

Cher seemed embarrassed and turned into my pillow. Cher seemed to have used me as a blanket and was soon fast asleep.

Looking at the stars so clearly, I remembered the time I was in the city. I had never achieved anything, and I never thought that I would be able to reach an island floating in the sky like something out of a fairy tale.

“I wonder if coming to the demonic land has changed me?”

Maybe the demonic land has the power to change people.

I wonder if Jennifer returned home safely. No, it doesn’t matter.
