Chapter 31 – Day 30 of Living in the Demonic Land
Early in the morning, I ate the bread that Cher had baked, and then I finished feeding the forest rats and watering the fields.
Then, I chose some wood to make the boat and tried to use the tools.
I thought the wood was dry enough, but when I cut it with the saw, it wasn’t really dry inside. It seems that wood takes much longer to dry.
Finally, I decided to spend the morning appraising P.J.’s weapons and armor. Even though I said I was appraising them, all I did was sort them into different types of magic circles using a beginner’s magic book.
I understood the magic circles for fire, water, earth, wind, etc., but there weren’t that many. It was as if most of the magic circles were unidentifiable. I copied the magic circles that were drawn on paper for future reference. Just the bundle of paper became thicker than the thin beginner’s magic book.
Soon, Jennifer woke up, ate the breakfast we had left for her, and went into the forest alone with her staff in her hand.
She said, “I must become strong enough not to cause any trouble.”
But she came back with a serious injury from being bitten by a bendgrass.
“Ah, you must be more careful. “
While casting a healing spell on her, Cher taught her to be aware of her surroundings when walking.
“But! If you hide to watch the monsters move, you’ll get bitten by the plants!”
This demonic land has different vegetation and monsters than other regions, so you just have to learn about them as you encounter them. Cher was a good caretaker, and she and Jennifer went into the forest together to teach her about the dangerous plants. Maybe she has siblings.
As usual, I’m doing paperwork. The captain gave me a simple beginner’s manual, but there were a few things in it that opened my eyes. It seems that the magic fist I’m using is some kind of body-strengthening magic, but it seems that it’s only been passed down to monks who trained in the mountains somewhere.
“So I’ve been living like a monk?”
There were other useful techniques as well, such as the fact that it was easier to cast magic if you made a round ball. I’m making slow progress, but that’s to be expected since I never had a proper education.
Cher and Jennifer returned from hunting monsters in the surrounding forest, so we had lunch.
They had apparently killed some Gibi Deer, and Cher looked very pleased. Jennifer’s face was stiff.
I hung it in a tree and proceeded to butcher it. I collected the entrails and blood in buckets and barrels, wasting nothing, and talked to Cher about making sausages later. Jennifer held back her vomit.
“You were an adventurer, so you’ve seen butchering before, right?”
I asked Jennifer.
“There are butchers in the capital. The monsters you kill can either be cut up or delivered to the Adventurer’s Guild as is…”
“Is it different in the countryside and in the city? If you’re here, you’ll have to do it at some point, so you might as well watch and learn.”
“Yes…”
Jennifer watched the butchering with wide eyes.
There was an increase in smoked and aged meat, but fresh meat was still the best.
Over lunch, I told Cher that it would take a long time to build the ship, and she waved her hand and said,
“Don’t worry, it’s okay if it takes a while!”
Is that okay? As far as I’m concerned, it’s okay because I’m not the one going back.
After my nap, I did some more paperwork while thinking about my mistakes in the desert.
This time, I read through P.J.’s notebook. I wanted to improve my skills, but I didn’t know what to do, so I decided to rely on the wisdom of my predecessors.
I memorized the information about the monsters, wrote down the magic circles drawn in the notebook, and tried them out. Then, I found that some of the magic circles didn’t work.
I drew the magic circle and put my magic power into it, but nothing happened. I tried to put a leaf on the magic circle and put my magic power into it, and suddenly the leaf disappeared. I also tried to put a stone on it, and it disappeared.
Is this a magic circle for teleportation? Or is it some kind of space magic? Is it possible that it’s a magic circle for disappearing? It’s really scary.
Anyway, it’s dangerous, so I marked it with an X.
I also found a magic circle for time magic. How did I know it was time magic? The green leaves on the magic circle turned yellow and withered.
I’m going to look for magic circles that look like this one and classify them as time magic.
That’s the first step to space-time magic.
“Makyo!”
Cher, who went to the swamp, has returned. When I look at her, her clothes are covered in blood. She seems fine, so it doesn’t seem to be her blood.
“What is it with that blood?”
“Huh? Oh, the Haze Turtle.”
It seems that she has defeated the Haze Turtle. She showed me a stone in the shape of a doughnut with a lightning pattern on it and said, “Look at this.”
“What is that?”
I take the stone from Cher and look closer. It’s definitely man-made, but nothing happens when I focus my magic on it.
Is it just a pendant? Hmm… Hmm? I think I’ve seen this lightning pattern somewhere before.
I look at the ruins page in P.J.’s notebook, and I see a similar lightning pattern drawn on one of the ruins.
When I asked Cher where she found it, she said it was at the bottom of a swamp. I’m surprised she found it in a swamp with such poor visibility.
“Jennifer can’t get up because she’s tired.”
Jennifer looks too tired to get up. She’s resting.
There’s a possibility that the ruins are buried in the swamp. I’ll go to the swamp tomorrow and investigate as well.
Since Cher was washing her clothes, I decided to cook dinner. Jennifer hadn’t come home yet, so I went to call her and found her fighting the Big Moth, a monster moth about the size of a person.
“Why? The paralysis isn’t working!”
She swung her staff around, but she had no magic power and couldn’t cast any spells. The monster played with her as it pleased. Eventually, when she got tired and collapsed, it would probably attack her.
I used a pebble that was lying around to throw at Big Moth and chased it away.
“Hah! Thank you very much!”
“Here is your food. You should be careful with your magic power. If you run out of magic power and faint, you’ll be eaten by monsters. I almost died the other day.”
“Even you, Makyo-san, almost died?”
“Yes. I almost die a lot around here. Let’s eat before the food gets cold.”
“Yes!”
Jennifer replied cheerfully, but her legs were shaking. I thought she was at a party of famous adventurers in the capital.
For dinner, we had a stir-fry of meat and vegetables, with lots of gibi deer meat. It was only seasoned with salt and pepper, but it was delicious.
“It’s delicious!”
Cher seemed to like it, too. Jennifer also gave it a good review.
After dinner, I had a light sparring session with Cher. I had been taking care of Jennifer all day, so my body seemed a little sluggish. Jennifer must have been tired because she went right to sleep after dinner.
We also had a good workout and went to bed. I think it was a day of a lot of paperwork.
