Chapter 34 – Day 33 of Living in the Demonic Land

The rain that has been falling since yesterday shows no signs of stopping.

The rain is only getting stronger. It’s almost like a hurricane.

I’ve been hiding in the cave for a long time.

Come to think of it, I wonder if that noblewoman warrior who came here last time made it home safely. With this kind of heavy rain, she’s probably stuck at the military training grounds.

Well, I don’t really care about other people.

While reading P.J.’s notebook, I decided to make my own magic tool.

Cher was making new bread. She wanted to add some mushrooms she had picked in the woods, so she tried different combinations.

Jennifer organized the inventory of weapons and food. There wasn’t much, so when she was done, she asked Cher to teach her magic.

“Well, what should I do?”

Since I don’t have a forge, I can only carve magic circles into wood.

I haven’t really studied magic circles, so I just copy what I see. For now, I tried to practice the magic circle from the explosion that burned Arachne.

If I carve a magic circle on a wooden board and place it under a pile of dead leaves, it’s perfect for catching big monsters. The strategy is to attack them when they’re bleeding from having a leg blown off. However, if I make a mistake in the cave, I’ll die instantly, so I leave some of them unfinished. I leave them in a state where I can just add a single line when I want to use them.

I also made a board with a magic circle drawn on it that would create a stream of water or a sprinkler to be installed in a field.

For lunch, I had the mushroom bread that Cher made. It was too salty because she added too much salt. She also looked disappointed and said, “Aaahh~.”

Rumble, rumble…

I think it was in the evening when I heard the earth rumbling. The sky was dark, and I didn’t really have a sense of time.

Thinking that maybe the river on the other side of the swamp had burst its banks, I went outside and saw a huge black mountain towering over the swamp.

“W-what is that?!”

“What is that?!”

“Makyo!”

Both Jennifer and Cher are terrified.

Rumble… rumble… rumble…

Strong wind and lightning raged around the giant monster, and the lightning and thunder spread throughout the demonic land.

As I stood in the cave and followed the whereabouts of the mountain-like monster, I saw a tornado in the southern forest, and trees and monsters flew into the sky.

There was no way I could fight something like that. It was just a disaster.

All I could do was stay calm and wait for the huge monster to pass by.

“Where did that thing come from?”

Still listening to the monster’s pounding footsteps, I returned to the cave. Fortunately, our cave was far from the monster’s path, so we were not harmed, but the thought of the monster coming towards us was nothing but terrifying.

Just as I was thinking that,

A monster fell right in front of the cave.

A large worm-like monster from the desert fell down, completely charred.

There were also scorpion monsters the size of houses, the family of Arachne, and crocodile monsters.

All of them fell around the cave one by one, completely charred.

It seems that the monsters living in the forest were caught in the tornado and burned by the lightning.

When a whole field boar fell onto the cliff where the cave was, the whole cave shook, and part of the ceiling collapsed.

We temporarily left the cave and took shelter. The rain continued to fall, so no matter where we took shelter, we would get soaked. The monsters of the demonic land were also fleeing from the giant magic beast.

The imps were heading north, shouting “Gyoeee!”

The haze turtles were also heading north, but slowly.

We also headed north and kept running. Jennifer’s body was getting cold quickly, so she climbed onto my back.

“Excuse me!”

“Shut up, don’t waste your energy!”

I tied Jennifer and myself together with a rope as we ran.

The ground under my feet seemed to shake, and then a huge crack opened up, swallowing the trees.

“Cher, use your magic! We have to get out of here! We can’t stay here!”

We kept running, channeling magic into our legs. I held up the broken tree with one hand and kept going.

We continued to run north, eventually reaching a barren area in the mountains.

“Makyo!”

Even Cher is at her limit. The heavy rain has spread to the wasteland, and flash floods are occurring everywhere. A lake has formed on the eastern side of the wasteland.

The death condors flying in the sky have been struck by lightning and are crashing down, billowing smoke.

It looks like the end of the world.

Returning from the wasteland to the forest, we hid in the shade of the trees.

We looked for a place where we could stay out of the rain and build a fire.

As night fell, the area was plunged into complete darkness. I wandered through the forest, using the occasional flash of lightning to guide me.

Suddenly, the ground beneath my feet disappeared, and I fell into a hole.

“Kyahhh!”

I’m sure Jennifer on my back was shocked as well, but she seemed to be breathing.

I looked up and saw a round hole.

“An old well? The remains of people who once lived in this demonic land. Ruins… Ouch!”

I tried to get up, but the bones in my ankle were broken. I untied the rope that bound me to Jennifer and leaned my back against the moss-covered wall.

At least it was a place where we could shelter from the rain and wind.

“Makyo!?”

I heard Cher’s voice from above the well.

“I’m alive!”

Cher had gathered some branches and fallen to the bottom of the well.

“Lightning, lightning.”

It seems that the underground is more peaceful than the surface.

When Cher lit a fire on the branch with magic, the bottom of the well lit up.

“I thought I was going to die… I’m sorry! I’m a burden…”

Tears streamed down Jennifer’s cheeks.

“We’re not saved yet.”

Thump… thump…

Even though we’ve reached the wasteland, we can still hear the footsteps of the giant monster.

As I stared at the fire and tried to use the healing magic on my own feet, I suddenly lost consciousness.

“Makyo…”

Cher’s voice echoed in the well.
