Chapter 36 – Day 35 of Living in the Demonic Land
When I woke up, I put out the fire and went back to the cave that was my home.
As usual, Cher was up early in the morning, roasting nuts and squirrel monsters and wrapping them in leaves. She said we would eat them when we rested.
Anyway, we started walking south. There was fog around us, so we couldn’t see very far. What’s more, the fog was getting thicker.
“Makyo, it’s white!”
“Something’s coming out!”
Cher and Jennifer were scared.
The fog was already thick. It was dangerous to continue because we didn’t know what kind of monsters were waiting for us. However, if we stopped in the middle of the forest and were surrounded by monsters, we would be finished.
“Makyo, that one, that zuooooooote!”
I don’t know what kind of onomatopoeia Cher is making, but she’s trying to communicate with gestures. It seems she’s telling me to interfere with the magic power flowing through the ground and make the ground rise.
I pulled the ground up in one go, creating a small mountain. The trees around it snapped and broke, but there was nothing I could do about it. We waited on the small mountain for a while. When the monsters climbed up, we fought them off, and the fog gradually lifted.
“Let’s go while we still have a chance!”
“Oh!”
“Yes!”
Passing between the trees that might fall at any moment, we continued south, passing over the bodies of the monsters buried in the landslide.
We reached the swamp by noon. Jennifer had already reached her limit and rode on my back.
From there, we took a long detour to reach our cave home, but the area around the swamp was in a state of complete disrepair, and the corpses of the monsters were scattered everywhere. The plants were strong and healthy, and many large plants were growing high into the sky, feeding on the dead monsters. The water weed had also spread all at once, and the purple pollen was flying around, making it hard to breathe.
Covering our mouths and using wind magic to avoid the pollen, we finally reached the cave.
“A~cha~!”
When we returned home, it was completely buried under rocks and debris.
“Hah~”
I was overcome with exhaustion. However, we couldn’t sleep like this.
Confirming that “giant monsters are a disaster,” I removed the rubble and rocks under the hot sun.
I picked up a stone, lifted a rock, and threw it away. Then, I removed the stone again because the stone and rock were hidden underneath. This process was repeated.
As we continued this work until almost evening, we heard the cries of monsters.
Chuu!
It seemed that the forest rat’s family had somehow managed to survive by hiding in the cracks of the rocks.
Finally, the pots and grindstones that had originally been there were found.
The ham had begun to rot from being wet in the rain, and the salt jar was broken.
“The wheat is ruined!”
Cher let out a cry and slumped her shoulders. The iron training swords were bent, but P.J.’s weapons and armor in the back were safe, not a scratch on them.
“Let’s clean up anyway. We need to make it livable first.”
Jennifer called out to us, but she wasn’t doing the hardest work.
“Jennifer, let’s work on building up your strength a little more. Otherwise, you won’t be able to make it in this demonic land.”
“Yes…”
As night fell, we scraped out the mud in the house while building a campfire. When we finally made enough room for three adults to sleep, Cher fell asleep first.
“I’m sorry, I can’t take it anymore…”
Jennifer also worked as hard as she could, despite her weakness, and then fell asleep.
“Damn, I want to take a bath, but I can’t. I’m losing to sleepiness.”
I said that and tried to sleep, too, but something moved in my breast pocket.
When I took it out, it was an old gold coin that the female adventurer zombie had before.
“The gold coin moved?”
The gold coin began to swell and shrink as if its heart was beating.
“Hey, I haven’t fallen asleep yet, have I?”
I rubbed my eyes once and looked at the gold coin, but it was still bulging and deflating.
“Could it be that the zombie corpses I buried have been washed away?”
I said and went outside, but there was only moonlight, and it was almost completely dark, so I couldn’t see anything. It’s dangerous to walk around the demonic land at such a time.
Maybe the spirit of the female adventurer is calling me, but I’ll have to stop tonight.
“Sorry, I’m tired today. Ah!”
The old gold coin in my hand jumped up and rolled to the ground.
“Wait, wait, wait!”
The gold coin, which seemed to be the most valuable thing I had, rolled toward the swamp. The female adventurer’s zombie was buried near the entrance to the demonic land, so it was going in the wrong direction.
My eyelids were heavy with sleep, but I could still see the gold coin shining in the moonlight.
“Where are you going?”
The gold coin kept rolling.
I tried to block its path with my foot many times, but it dodged me as if it were alive.
Finally, I followed the gold coin to the edge of the swamp.
Plop.
The gold coin finally stopped as it entered the swamp.
“What the hell is this?”
As I picked up the gold coin from the swamp, I saw a white elf woman standing on the surface of the water in front of me, looking at me. The other side of the woman was transparent. She obviously had no physical body.
“Is that…”
The white elf woman said and turned around and walked away on the surface of the water.
This is what it means to have your hair stand on end.
I stared at the gold coin in my hand for a while.
I went home and slept between Cher and Jennifer, but it took me a while to fall asleep because I couldn’t believe what I had seen.
