Chapter 37 – Day 36 of Living in the Demonic Land
Over breakfast, I told Cher about the elf ghost I had met the day before, and she burst out laughing.
“Ara, this is a demonic land, so there must be some ghosts, right?”
Jennifer looked at me kindly as if to say, “Ghosts are comforting.”
“No, aren’t they scary?”
“Uhihihi! You idiot!”
Cher seems to think I’m hallucinating.
“Aren’t you scared?”
“What’s scary about them?”
Jennifer asked me back.
“They have no substance!”
“So it’s not that scary. You haven’t done anything to make them hate you, have you?”
“I don’t think so, but…”
“Then it’s okay. Even if they have a grudge against you, you can just sprinkle holy water on them, and they’ll be cured.”
“Jennifer, can you make holy water?”
“Of course I can. I’m a priest, so I can make it.”
“Make it! Please!”
“Sure.”
Jennifer went to get some clean water, soaked some medicinal herbs in it, and began to chant a prayer. Her movements were very refined, and she looked like a real priest. Well, she is a real priest.
“Jennifer? Huh?”
Cher and I were both surprised. For the first time, I felt that Jennifer was actually doing something useful for the demonic land. It seems that everyone has some good points.
For now, I’ll leave the old gold coin in the holy water Jennifer made. I think that should be enough to stop the ghost disturbances in the demonic land.
“We’re working again today.”
“It’s muddy.”
“I’ll wash the dishes.”
The house still hasn’t been restored to its original state.
We’ve cleaned up the mud and taken the dishes and furniture outside. The inside of the house feels much bigger now that the furniture is out. There are still rocks and stones in the back. Some parts of the ceiling had collapsed, leaving holes that I filled with wooden planks. I also repaired the collapsed entrance by making a wooden canopy.
Jennifer washed the furniture and dishes, and Cher used water magic and wind magic to scrape out the mud. I did the heavy lifting and repairs. We had decided on our roles the day before and got to work.
Anyway, it was hard to see all the food we had saved covered in mud. I’ll have to go back to the military training facility soon.
Even though they were concentrating on their work, the women did not forget about food and boiled Giza Crab and Swamp Fish monsters in a properly cleaned pot.
The same task was repeated in the afternoon. Once a person’s life is disrupted, it takes time to get back on track.
“Makyo! The back!”
“Yes~”
We removed the rocks and stones from the back. The front of the house is now like a small stone wall.
The magic weapons and armor that P.J. had made were still there, but they were still intact.
“Is it Adamantite?”
Jennifer seems to know this material.
“What is it?”
“It’s a very hard metal. I’ve only seen it a few times, but even among high-level adventurers, it was only used by high-level lone wolves.”
“I wonder why?”
“It was said that the weapons were too good and that they would cause conflicts among the members. It was banned in my party.”
“Huh, well, P.J. is also a lone wolf type. I’ve seen only a few dead bodies.”
There are no descriptions of his companions in P.J.’s notebook. Everything has been cleaned of mud and dried in the sun.
There is no mop, but the dried mud is scrubbed off with a hard spiky plant fruit, like a brush.
“Makyo!”
Cher seems to have found something again. As I walk over, I see a magic circle glowing pale blue on the ground.
“This is dangerous! What is it?”
So far, there has been no effect from the magic, and it is too complicated a magic circle to be able to tell what it is.
“This is broken.”
As Cher said, the magic circle was not in perfect shape, and it had either been broken by the giant monster’s attack the other day or before. Still, the fact that it was about to activate was dangerous.
“Right now, it’s dangerous, so let’s not use this room.”
“Yes, let’s do that.”
This is the room where P.J. kept his magic tools, so there are a lot of dangerous things here.
I’ve been working since this morning, so I’ll go to bed after dinner. It’s a childish way of living, but it’s the time when I recover the most.
“Makyo!”
“Makyo-san! It might be leaking!”
I was sleeping in my room when the board covering the ceiling started leaking. But it wasn’t raining. I told the two of them to go and change and wash up.
“It’s my fault that there was a gap, so you can sleep in my room tonight.”
In the end, the three of us slept in a triangle.
…splash, splash.
I woke up to the sound of water splashing. Was the sound coming from the water jug containing the holy water?
“Cher! Jennifer!”
I tried to wake them up, but they didn’t wake up at all, probably because they were tired. On the other hand, I had gone to bed early, so I was awake.
I tried to force myself to sleep, but the sound of the water splashing kept me awake.
“Haah~…”
I let out a long sigh, got up, and checked the jar of holy water in the moonlight. As I expected, the old gold coin was bulging and shrinking like a beating heart.
“This holy water of Jennifer’s is completely useless!”
As I looked into the water jug, the old gold coin started rolling around just like yesterday. Of course, it was stopped by the edge of the jug, but it still rolled around on the spot.
“Is that elf ghost calling me again?”
I really don’t want to, but I also don’t want to be haunted by it.
“I have to stop it.”
With that in mind, I took the water jug and the magic stone lantern and set out into the night. I followed the direction in which the old gold coin was trying to roll.
The swamp is the same as yesterday, but the old gold coin seems to want to go further northeast.
I go around the swamp and head northeast. This area is like a garden. The imps scream, and the giant tree monster, Treant, attacks, but I deal with it with a magic-covered fist. Caught off guard, the monster is easily repelled.
The other plants are dormant, and the golden bats are flying around, but I don’t think they’re paying any attention to me.
“It’s pretty rough here, too.”
The damage caused by the giant monster is extensive, causing landslides and cracks in the ground. The moonlight shines on the scene and makes it look painful. Perhaps the monsters are also trying to get their lives back on track.
As I continued to walk and observe my surroundings, I was drawn to the old gold coin and ended up quite far from home.
Maybe I’d gone through the forest and ended up in the wasteland.
“I wonder if I can get back home…”
“Ugh!”
I thought I stepped on something soft and heard a voice coming from the ground. I stepped on it again, and the voice came again.
I brushed aside the dead leaves on the ground, and a white-skinned elf appeared.
“Huh, is that a ghost? A zombie?”
“I’m alive… please help me. I’ll do anything.”
For now, I was still afraid, so I gave her some holy water from a water jug.
The elf swallowed the water, and it really seemed like she was alive. The old gold coin didn’t move anymore.
The elf seemed unable to get up, so I dug her out of the dead leaves and discovered that she was quite tall. She was wearing a long robe with a distinctive cross pattern, and her bare feet were very cold and red. I warmed them in my hands, then tore off the sleeves and wrapped them around her feet.
“I’m sorry.”
“Where are you from?”
“From the elven country, beyond the mountain range.”
“You crossed the snowy mountains barefoot?”
“My shoes broke on the way.”
She must have come to this demonic land for a reason, coming all the way over the mountains.
“What is your name?”
“Helgen, Helgen Touron. Call me Hel.”
“I see. My name is Makyo. I’m the landlord of this demonic land. Why don’t you come to my place for now?”
“Please. I thought I would be swallowed by the ground. I searched around in my spirit body, but I’m glad there are still living people.”
It seems that the ghost I saw last night was Hel’s spirit body.
If it has a physical form, it’s not frightening.
“Can you stand up?”
I tried to give Hel a shoulder to lean on, but her shoulder was red. When I turned up her clothes and shone a magic stone lantern on it, I could see that the magic circle had been cut with a knife, and there was blood.
“Are you a runaway slave?”
“No, I’ve never been anyone’s slave. I ran away because I was about to become a slave of the country.”
“A criminal slave?”
“I committed no crime. I just wanted to stop those ignorant elves from starting a stupid war.”
“So you are a criminal slave?”
“I was just kicked out of my country. Please let me stay here for a while, landlord.”
“You’d better pay the rent.”
I carried Hel on my back and walked home.
