Chapter 38 – Day 37 of Living in the Demonic Land

When I woke up in the morning, I could hear Cher, Jennifer, and Hel arguing.

“Who are you?”

“You’re a demon? What does that mean?”

“You’re the ghost! I’m going to exorcise you right now!”

It seems that it was a mistake to bring Hel here last night and let her sleep there.

“Wait, wait! This elf is Hel. I brought her here yesterday. She seems to have run away from her country.”

“What do you mean, run away from her country?”

Jennifer asked.

“She says she ran away because she was a criminal slave.”

“I didn’t commit any crimes!”

Hel retorted.

“So you’re a runaway slave? But you scratched off your slave mark yourself. Cher, please heal her.”

“Wait a minute! Why are you letting a demon heal me when there’s a priest here?”

Hel seems to have a problem with demons.

“Because she has the most magic power. There’s no other reason.”

“But she’s a demon!”

“Listen, in this demonic land, it doesn’t matter what race you are. It’s whether you can survive or not. If you want to die of tetanus with your wounds, that’s fine. But even if you die, you’ll still have to pay the rent. Speaking of elf hearts, maybe a black magician would buy them.”

When I threatened her like that, Hel obediently offered her shoulder to Cher and said, “Here.” Cher didn’t like her attitude and nudged her with a stick from the bonfire.

“Ahh! Damn it! What are you doing? Stop it!”

Hel writhed in agony, but there was no one to stop Cher.

“Even demons have a sense of etiquette.”

Jennifer taught her, and finally, Hel bowed to Cher and said, “Please.”

“Damn it! If only I could make a healing potion, this wound wouldn’t be a problem.”

“Don’t move!”

Hel was hit in the head by Cher’s fist.

“Why me…!”

Slap!

Chel slapped Hel’s shoulder to make sure she was okay.

“Ouch!”

“All right!”

“Hey Hel, this is Cher and Jennifer. I don’t know how long you’ll be here, but get to know each other.”

I let them introduce themselves at random, and then I went to the swamp to wash my face.

While I was there, I took a look at the fields, and they were completely destroyed and had become a mass breeding ground for swimming flowers.

“Is there no other way but to make and sell poison for use against monsters?”

When I returned to the cave, Hel was screaming again.

It seemed that Jennifer was cooking dinner, and Hel was complaining again.

“I wasn’t banished. I only came here because I heard there was a city over the mountain; I didn’t know there was a place like this.”

Yesterday, she said she wanted to stay here for a while, but it seems Hel wants to go to the city.

“Oh, is that so? The exit is over there. I’ll only charge you a day’s rent. If you can make a recovery potion, you can pay me with it.”

I just thought that elven medicine might be worth something. I asked Jennifer in a whisper, “It depends on the item, but I’ve heard that elven pharmacology is developing.”

“Hahaha! That’s easy. I’ll make the recovery medicine and be on my way.”

As soon as Hel said that and entered the forest, she was attacked by a cam fruit and screamed.

“Never mind, let’s eat.”

“Bread, it’s baked.”

It seems that Cher baked the bread. Since there was not much flour, she could not afford to make a mistake.

For breakfast, there was grilled field boar and golden bat that Cher had caught, bitter but edible wild grass, and small bread.

“There’s plenty of monster meat, but we still need vegetables and flour.”

“We really need to go to the military training facility at least once.”

Jennifer said in a serious tone. I also gave Jennifer some paper and charcoal to make a list and keep track of the food and weapons. I asked her to do this on the condition that I would give her a discount on the rent.

“What are we going to bring? Most of it is broken.”

We don’t have anything to trade.

“I think the easiest thing to make would be staffs from the demonic land. Even things like monster fur and ingredients for medicine?”

“Even though you say medicine, have you studied pharmacology?”

“I only studied a little. But there are a lot of leaves and berries with different shapes in the demonic land.”

“Elves?”

Cher asked. I should have asked because I had heard that the elf Hel could make recovery medicine.

“But Hel is gone, right?”

“I think she’s lying around somewhere.”

Jennifer said, and Cher nodded in agreement.

“Is that so?”

I looked back doubtfully and saw Hel lying where I could see her.

I thought she was playing, but she was actually paralyzed from the poison of the big moth.

“I’m just asking, but is this a joke that involves risking your life?”

“…..”

It seems that Hel is too paralyzed to speak. There is also the possibility that she will die from the poison of the Poison Scorpion’s children crawling on her body.

“I’ll help you, but there’s a condition. If you’ve mastered pharmacology, I want you to identify the herbs and mushrooms in this demonic land and tell me what can be used as ingredients for medicine. I want to use them for trade.”

“…..”

Hel blinked repeatedly as she pleaded, but I couldn’t understand what she was trying to say.

“If you don’t help me, I’ll leave you.”

I decided to accept Cher’s opinion.

We carried Hel into the cave, and then Cher and I went into the forest to gather materials for the staff. We also hunted some monsters for dinner. Jennifer gathered edible plants and berries near the cave and set up the traps I had taught her to make.

The terrain of the forest had changed considerably since the last time, but the monsters that inhabited it had not become stronger. However, the rate of encountering monsters with powerful magic stones was low.

“Is it due to the influence of the giant monster? In any case, is it more about the quantity than the effect of the magic stone?”

“Yes. It can be used for the staff.”

It’s not easy to find, but if we find one, we can be sure to defeat it. The stones of small imps and the like are not suitable for the staff to begin with. I chose a size larger than a green tiger and searched the entire swamp. Thanks to all the experience I’ve gained, my range of action has expanded.

“Are you tired?”

“No, I can keep going.”

It seems that Cher has gained stamina as well.

“Makyo…!”

While exploring the forest, Cher stopped me with a low voice. In the direction Cher was pointing, I could see a white cocoon-like mass the size of a house through the trees.

“Is it an Arachne?”

I asked Cher, and she nodded.

We have a trauma with Arachne. Now, we have enough magic and physical strength to attack it.

There is still some distance, so we will plan our strategy. We will not use fire magic as we have used it all before. We will try to collect Arachne’s thread and use it as a replacement material.

I grabbed my saber, and Cher grabbed P.J.’s knife, and we threw rocks at the white mass. Immediately, an Arachne appeared from inside and looked around. We hid in the bushes and watched.

Cher threw another rock.

Arachne noticed Cher and came straight at her.

As she was about to pass right by me, I jumped out of the bushes and stabbed it in the neck. Blood spurted from Arachne’s neck.

Still, Cher’s knife pierced Arachne’s body, which continued to move. With a loud thud, Arachne’s body falls to the ground. As I thought, P.J.’s knife is something else.

I gather Arachne’s threads and wrap them around a branch. There were many eggs inside the cocoon, but I crushed them all. Perhaps Arachne is raising its children alone.

“You’ve done a good job collecting this time.”

“It’s rare to see someone who can’t use magic.”

Now that she mentions it, it’s true. Maybe I’m getting better at using magic at the right time.

I’m pretty happy today because I got my hands on the magical product of the demonic land, Arachne’s thread.

“Arachne’s thread is a great thing to trade for!”

Jennifer is also happy.

It seems that Hel’s paralysis has been lifted as well, and she is making a recovery potion from the medicinal herbs Jennifer has collected.

“You’re awake?”

“I will pay the rent with the recovery medicine and the herbs. For now, please let me stay here again.”

Hel begged, almost putting her head on the floor.

“If you pay the rent, you can stay as long as you want. But if you make any trouble, I’ll throw you out immediately.”

“I understand.”

“This is a demonic land. There are many things that are different from the outside world. Regardless of race, those who can’t survive will die. Remember this well. If you die and turn into a zombie, we’ll have to clean up after you.”

I said this and went to make a staff. Cher sorted the magic stones.

Hel made medicine. And Jennifer…?

“It seems like I’m the only one not doing my job as manager, right?”

Jennifer worked quickly and made a list in no time, so she packed the material.

“You have to be strong, or you’ll never be able to do anything just like me!”

Jennifer complained to the newcomer, Hel.
