Chapter 39 – Day 38 of Living in the Demonic Land

“Are you two ready?”

Jennifer asked about the material. Today, we were going to the military training facility, so Jennifer had prepared things like fur bedding and pots. However, we planned to return in the evening, so there wasn’t much to prepare.

I had been up all night making the staff last night, so I stayed up late.

“There is really not much to prepare, is there? I’m going to wash my face. Cher, do you have any bread for me?”

Cher shook her head sadly as she baked a small loaf of bread.

The flour situation in demonic land is so bad that she can’t even make bread for me.

As I was washing my face in the swamp, Hel, the elf, floated to the surface. She must have accidentally approached a cluster of swimming flowers.

For now, I pulled her out of the swamp, gave her artificial respiration, and blew my cheeks as hard as I could.

Pahhnnn!

“Cough! Cough!”

“This white flower has a sleep-inducing effect. If you don’t have insomnia, don’t get too close.”

“Have I been rescued again?”

“Did you come all the way from the elven land just to die?”

We went back home and grilled some field boar meat. We ate it with the sauce made from berries that Jennifer had picked. It was different in taste, but we were grateful for it. We all had the Giza crab soup. Even Hel, who had a medicinal herb stuck to her cheek, drank it in one gulp.

“We’ll have to get some salt when we get back.”

“We’ll be busy.”

Living in the demonic land is a lot of work.

“”See you later!””

Jennifer and Hel saw us off, and Cher and I went to the exit of the demonic land. We have the staff of the demonic land and the thread of Arachne, so I think the negotiations will be easy. If possible, I’d like to get some flour, vegetables, and construction tools. The number of people has increased, so the cave is getting a little cramped.

Monsters and plants from the demonic land are attacking us, but we’ve gotten used to the monsters around the cave, so we just cut them down. If they’re not really valuable, we just collect the magic stones and throw them away. Usually, the plants at the destination will digest them. We’ve been through here so many times that a path has formed, and we reached the exit in about half an hour.

“This area hasn’t been affected by the giant monster either.”

“It’s easy.”

Neither Cher nor I used much magic power.

In the stream at the exit, the slime was still swimming around as usual. However, they must have finally learned our scent because they didn’t attack us. I jumped over the stream and entered the ordinary forest.

As long as we don’t attack the monsters or plants, they won’t attack us. Sometimes, goblins and cyclops would look at us, but as long as we kept moving, they wouldn’t chase us.

I could hear the sound of horses’ hooves, but it was probably the military cavalry practicing. I thought about saying hello but decided to hurry on ahead since Cher wasn’t in disguise yet.

We arrived at the training facility’s fields in the morning.

After Cher finished her disguise, we walked along the side path of the fields.

“Is it different from usual?”

As Cher said, the soldiers who usually work in the fields were not there.

“What could have happened?”

For now, we walked towards the building, casting a protective spell around our bodies.

Clang, clang, clang.

The sound of clashing swords could be heard from the building.

“The sound was light.

“It’s just a training exercise. They don’t take it seriously.”

As I walked over to the sound, I saw a slave girl fighting with soldiers in the middle of a small arena. The soldiers were holding back to avoid killing her, but the slave was swinging her short knife with all her might.

“Are they training the slave to enter the city arena?”

As I watched from a distance, the captain noticed us.

“Can you wait a moment? I’m trying to calm the slave down.”

It doesn’t look like they’re training the slave or anything.

Cher swings her staff, which has a paralyzing effect, and the magic flies straight out and hits the slave. The slave then stops moving.

The soldiers are confused by the sudden intervention.

“Hey, stop standing around and put the shackles on the slave!”

The captain gives the order, and the slave is restrained. The slave’s face looked familiar, but I couldn’t remember where I’d seen her before.

The soldiers took the restrained slave, who couldn’t move, back into the building.

“Have you come to ask about the war?”

The captain asked.

“War? Oh no, there was a disaster in the demonic land, and all our food was washed away. If you don’t mind, could you trade it for weapons and materials?”

“I see. That’s exactly what we need. Have you met the messenger?”

“Messenger?”

“No, I mean this one. It never worked anyway.”

The captain said this and led us to the usual hut.

“Is it a staff?”

The captain asked as we put down the shoiko.

“Yes, and this time, we also have some of Arachne’s thread. Would that be useful as a trade item?”

Since he mentioned war earlier, there might be a demand for staff.

“Arachne’s thread? That’s a rare find. What do you want?”

“Flour and vegetables. Also, if you have any construction tools…”

“The last time you came, you said you wanted tools to build a ship. Are you still into that?”

“No, the wood hasn’t dried yet, so I put it on hold.”

“I see. Well, I thought you might need them, so I’ve prepared a saw, a hammer, and nails. I think I also have some hinges in storage. It seems that the spell book you mentioned last time can’t be found even in the capital, so I’m asking around to see if anyone has any information.”

The captain seems to have remembered my request, which is a great help.

“Is that okay with you for the trade?”

“Yes, that’s more than enough for us!”

“I see. I’ll tell my men and give it to you on the way back. By the way, there’s something I want you to keep in mind. It’s about the demonic land… where should I start?”

The captain put his hand to his chin as he said, “Well…” As long as we can trade food, I don’t need anything else, but when he said it was about the demonic land, I was curious.

“Do you remember that there was a civil war in a nearby territory?”

“Yes, there was also a noble female warrior who came to buy staffs in the demonic land.”

“Ah, you mentioned that. It’s called East Kenya, and there was a civil war between the adventurers and the nobles, but then they were interrupted by the elves from the elf country.”

“You mean they were invaded?”

“Well, Hel said she wanted to stop the war in the elf country.

“That’s right. The elves say they only came to take back the land of their ancestors, but times have changed, right?”

“Yes, the people who live there are different too.”

“Well, they were quickly driven away. In that battle, the adventurers achieved more military success than the nobles, and the nobles fell. It’s a warlike land, so the strong end up moving the people around.”

“So the adventurers rule the territory now?”

“No, the nobles who lured the adventurers are in control. I’m not familiar with the details either.”

“So, does this have anything to do with the demonic land?”

I asked the main question.

“The nobleman who is currently ruling East Kenya has begun to claim that the demonic land over there is their territory as well. I think he must have seen the power of the staff and wants to build an army.”

“Oh, so that’s why you sent the messenger to the demonic land?”

“I am truly sorry. You are the one who is developing the untouched demonic land. Since it is still undeveloped, it is definitely your land.”

“That’s right. I bought the land. I have the certificate.”

I took the certificate out of my bag and showed it to him. It was already in tatters, but the writing was still legible.

“Ah, that’s the one the real estate agent gave you, isn’t it? Actually, it doesn’t have much effect. In our country, you might lose the case if it doesn’t have the signature of the lord who properly governs the territory.”

“No way…”

The certificate I had so carefully kept turned out to be just a piece of paper.

“To be honest, as the representative of this training facility, I don’t think anyone other than you could live in that demonic land, so I think it would be better if it remained your land rather than becoming the territory of some noble family.”

“So you’re on our side?”

The captain nodded and said, “I think so.”

“To begin with, the demonic land has long been a gray area, and it’s doubtful that it even belongs to this country. Besides, it’s very useful as a buffer zone between other countries. If there’s anything the military can do, we’d like to cooperate as much as possible. However, please remember that there are people who want to take over your demonic land.”

To be honest, this is a huge pain in the ass. I haven’t even seen the whole picture of the demonic land yet, so why do I have to give it up?

“Impossible.”

Cher said suddenly.

“What do you mean?”

“Only we can make this staff. It’s impossible for them to take the demonic land.”

She said in a low voice so that only I could hear.

“That’s right. Even giant monsters will come. If it comes to that, we can just run away to the desert.”

Even if they come after us, they’ll have to get used to the demonic land first. If they’re not careful, they’ll die.

I’m only alive by sheer luck.

“The new Lord of East Kenya doesn’t understand that.”

The captain scratched his head.

“Hmm? The army has nothing to do with East Kenya?”

“Well, we are the royal army, so it is not unconnected. Even in this civil war, we were prepared to provide logistical support to the nobles. But basically, we are the king’s army. If the lord of East Kenya were to attack the royal family, we would destroy him. That’s why we have training facilities.”

Even the army has its own circumstances.

“I understand. If someone comes, I can just turn them away, right?”

“Yes. If someone tries to break in and cause trouble, you can send them away.”

“I understand.”

Basically, it seems that I can continue to be the landlord of the demonic land.

As soon as I left the hut and waited, the soldiers brought me food and tools.

“I am always sorry for your loss.”

“No, it’s okay.”

We put as many sacks of flour as we could on the back of the shoiko and gathered the vegetables.

“Salt, pickles.”

Cher seems to want to pickle the vegetables quickly.

“Eh?”

One of the soldiers whispers something to the captain.

“Oh, I see. In exchange for the loss, would you take the slave we just captured to the demonic land?”

The captain asks with an apologetic look on his face.

“The one who caused trouble, right?”

It doesn’t matter if you use her as a cargo carrier, sex slave, or whatever. The new Lord of Eastern Kenya sent her to us as a gift, saying that he couldn’t use her in the arena, so he wanted us to train her in the army…”

The captain’s voice suddenly fell silent.

“If we make her a sex slave, the next day, some of the soldiers will not be able to endure the training. If we have to do exercises in the forest, there will be casualties. To be honest, there are a lot of wild beasts in this training facility, so it would be troublesome if they fought over her. If you don’t want her, you can kill her.”

I can’t help but think that the army should kill her, but I guess they can’t just throw away a gift from the new lord.

“We don’t want her either.”

As I said this, Cher tugged at my sleeve.

“Why not just take what you can get? You know, farm workers.”

The field is a mess, and it’s true that the more workers, the better, but what should I do? Should I turn her into a scarecrow?

While I was wondering, the soldiers came carrying the female slave from earlier. The female slave that was thrown in front of me was someone I had seen somewhere before…

“Ah, t-t-the one from the demonic land!”

She was a noble female warrior who had come to buy something. However, now she had a shaved head and was wearing rags, and her overly full breasts were swaying. It seems that the new lord wants to wipe out the blood of the previous lord.

“S-s-s-so, that means that the person in disguise over here is…”

Bofuhh!

She was about to say something about Cher, so I hit her in the jaw with my palm and knocked her out. If they found out she was a demon, I wouldn’t be able to come to this training facility again.

“I’ll bring her back. See you later.”

I carried the slave and ran quickly into the forest. Cher was also following me.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I’ll count on you again!”

I heard the captain’s voice behind me.

We took the shortest route to the demonic land and arrived there shortly after noon.

Once there, Cher took off her disguise and went into the cave.

“Welcome back. You were quick. But that’s still a lot of flour.”

Jennifer said, looking at the flour we were carrying.

“What is that?”

Hel asked, looking at the slave.

“Oh, I got a slave to replace the scarecrow in the field.”

“What, a scarecrow? Can I use her for an experiment?”

Hel seemed to want to try the recovery potion she had made.

“Sure.”

As Hel made the slave drink the recovery potion, the slave woke up.

When she looked around and saw Hel, the slave…

“Y-you damned elf! It’s all your fault!”

She jumped at her.

“What! I healed you! Ugh!”

Hel also tried to fight back, but although the slave seemed to have the advantage in strength, Hel’s arm was much longer.

“Slaves, you should get along.”

I held them both down.

“I’m not a slave!”

“I’m not a slave either!”

“I don’t care, but you should listen to each other’s circumstances.”

I said, and then I tied them up and left them on the ground.

“Makyo, salt!”

Cher said. We have to go and get salt from the sea before the sun sets.

“Yes, yes. Jennifer, take care of them.”

“Okay. Have a nice trip!”

Jennifer waved us off, and we headed east.

“Man, we’re busy.”

“Are you happy with all the women in this demonic land?”

Now that she mentions it, it’s all women who come to this demonic land.

“I am not happy about it. They’re all people who have been banished from somewhere. You should also go back to the demon country, Cher.”

“Yes, yes.”

We hurried to the sea.
