Chapter 40 – Day 39 of Living in the Demonic Land
Last night, I went to the beach to make salt, and when I came back, I went straight to bed.
When I woke up in the morning, the four women were making a racket while cooking. Apparently, they didn’t like Jennifer’s cooking. Yesterday, Hel and the female warrior, Sylvia, had become friends, and they demanded that Jennifer make the stir-fried vegetables spicier.
“Good morning.”
“G-g-good morning. My name is Sylvia.”
As usual, she’s wearing only a piece of cloth, but she doesn’t seem so tragic. Maybe it’s because she has a good figure?
“Makyo-dono, will you give me some training as well?”
Hel asked me. It seems that my name has become Makyo after all.
“I don’t know what kind of training you want, but make sure you work enough to pay the rent. Jennifer, find a job for Sylvia.”
“Yes, I understand.”
If you think about it, Sylvia is a former noblewoman, so she might not be suited for farm work. I’ve failed.
“Cher, make some bread for me as well.”
“Yes.”
As usual, Cher stares intently at the bread as it bakes. She looks happy because there is a lot of flour.
When I went to wash my face in the swamp, I saw a fish monster floating there. It wasn’t dead, but it was sleeping. It seems to be affected by the swimming flowers nearby. Hel was also close to death because of it.
“Should I cut it? Since I’m here, I might as well make some sleeping powder.”
For now, I washed my face far away from the area where the swimming flowers grew and returned to the cave.
“Jennifer, are there any jars or baskets?”
“I think all the jars are broken, aren’t they? Shall we make baskets?”
“That’s right. It would be a great help if you could make a basket for now. Hel, you need a jar to keep the potion in, don’t you?”
“Of course, I need one…”
“So let’s start building a kiln. I appoint Hel to be the potter in the demonic land!”
“W-why me!?”
“You’re going to pay the rent with the potions, right? Hel is the right person for the job.”
“Gnunu…”
Hel frowned.
“Have you ever done any farm work, Sylvia?”
“No, I haven’t. I’ve only ever fought. Well, I can hunt monsters.”
That’s the easiest job. But I don’t know if Sylvia can handle the monsters in the demonic land.
“Then go and hunt some meat. You can use the weapons in the cave.”
Maybe a broken sword or P.J.’s knife will do the trick.
“If you can’t, get someone else to help you. Oh, and I’m telling you all this, but I think a giant monster is coming back in three months, so make sure you leave this demonic land before then. I won’t take any responsibility if you die.”
There’s nothing worse than dying and becoming a monster. For the sake of my mental health, I want to avoid that at all costs. I have to build Cher’s ship within three months.
“I want to search for ruins…”
Is Hel an explorer?
“You can look for them yourself. As long as you pay the rent, I’ll let you stay, but if I find it useless, I’ll kick you out immediately, so please do your job.”
“Perfect!”
It looks like Cher’s bread is done baking.
For breakfast, there was a slightly spicy stir-fried vegetable dish with meat and golden brown bread. There was nothing to complain about the food.
“Was it spicy?”
Jennifer seemed worried about her own seasoning. Right now, there were many things in the demonic land that needed to be taken care of rather than cooking skills.
“It’s delicious! Don’t worry about it.”
Jennifer’s seasoning was originally light.
After eating, everyone started to move.
Sylvia quickly entered the forest and received her baptism by being bitten by a cam fruit. However, she was more experienced in fighting than Hel, so she went deeper into the forest.
Hel dug into the ground to look for clay. It appears that she will begin by making the bricks for the kiln. She is also working on mixing the weeds and soil.
Cher, Jennifer, and I went looking for vines to make baskets. We found some right away as they attacked us. Jennifer was enthusiastic about making a big one to put tea leaves in.
Cher and I then went into the forest to collect monster blood to harvest the swimming flowers.
“If there’s a big monster, it will gather quickly.”
“Ah, she’ll be eaten!”
Looking in the direction Cher was pointing, I saw that Sylvia was about to be eaten by a Haze Turtle. It seemed that she was also wearing armor, but it was broken and lying on the ground.
“Kyaaaaaaaaaaa!!!”
We left the screaming Sylvia alone, and Cher and I used magic to paralyze the haze turtle, which was about the size of a hut and cut off its head.
Splash!
Blood gushed out of the turtle’s neck like a fountain and splashed all over Sylvia. Her clothes were soaked in blood, and she looked like she was already naked.
“Kyonyuu!”
Cher looked at Sylvia’s chest, but it seemed that the blood-covered Sylvia was in no mood for that.
“You might want to wash it in the swamp. The smell of blood will attract both monsters and plants.”
“I-I-I understand!”
Sylvia ran towards the swamp as I had advised.
“Whoa!”
There was a loud thud.
Sylvia fell straight into the pit. It was probably one of the traps that either Jennifer or I had set earlier. If she had been paying attention, she would have noticed it, but newbies don’t notice such things. The traps seem to work on monsters as well. She’ll be a good test subject.
Sylvia was immobilized by the paralyzing and sleeping potions, but I decided to leave her there until noon.
I took blood from the base of the neck of the dead Haze Turtle corpse. The bag from the field boar’s stomach was filled with blood. It was my job to lift the Haze Turtle. Cher cast a spell to strengthen my muscles. We had enough blood and meat for today’s harvest.
We returned to the cave for lunch. When I dragged the dead turtle and carried the sleeping Sylvia back, the elf Hel was horrified.
“Is it dead?”
“The head is gone, so of course it’s dead.”
“No, that’s not what I mean, it’s Sylvia.”
“Oh, she’s alive. Cher, go wash Sylvia.”
It feels a bit criminal if I’m the one washing her.
“Ehh~, the swamp?”
If she washes her in the swamp, there might be another effect of the swimming flower.
“Why don’t you wash her in the stream at the entrance? There’s only slime there.”
“Got it.”
Cher carried Silvia and headed for the entrance.
Hel was making a wooden frame for the brick mold, and Jennifer was making a large basket, so naturally, I was in charge of lunch.
Lunch, of course, was the delicious Haze Turtle Soup. I had made it before, so I knew it would be delicious. When I tasted it, it was so good that I laughed.
“Makyo… just a minute!”
Cher came back from washing Sylvia and called me over.
“What is it?”
“Just a minute…”
She seemed unable to explain.
“The food is ready, so you can eat it. Just stir it up for me.”
“I’m sorry.”
I left the pot in Hel’s hands and ran over to Cher.
“Is something wrong?”
“Put her down for a moment.”
Sylvia had been washed, but she seemed unable to move. Her eyelids seemed to move, and she blinked, but her body seemed numb. Even if she had an excellent figure, it would be a shame for her to end up like this. For now, she was left naked in the sun outside the cave.
“Over here!”
Cher led me to the stream at the entrance to the demonic land.
The stream was a bit rough, with the slime looking for blood.
“Is this what you wanted me to come to?”
“No, over there!”
In the forest on the other side of the stream, a horse monster called Fihorse was lying down. It was bleeding, so I thought it might be dead.
“Huh? Doesn’t that Fihorse have a saddle on it?”
Anyway, I jumped over the stream to check, and sure enough, it had a saddle on. I thought it was dead because it wasn’t breathing, but its internal organs had been eaten. There were tracks nearby that looked like something had been dragged. I followed them and found two Fihorse corpses without their internal organs. I looked around for the rider but couldn’t find them.
Buzz…
I could hear the sound of the monster’s wings in the distance.
“Makyo”
“Shh!”
If I listen closely, I can tell which direction it’s coming from.
As I approached the sound, I saw the riders’ armor and bags lying on the ground.
Buzz…
Looking up, I saw a huge nest of Vespa Hornets clinging to the cliff. The way things are going, I think the riders are going to be meatballs.
“What should we do?”
“There’s no hope for them. Let’s go home and eat.”
For the time being, I decided to go home after collecting the fallen bags. The Vespa Hornet noticed us and attacked, but Cher chased it away with fire magic. The monsters outside the demonic land seem to move very slowly.
We went home and ate lunch. As expected, the haze turtle soup was delicious.
“Is something wrong?”
Jennifer asked, but it wasn’t something to talk about during dinner, so I just told her “later.”
After lunch, I went out to cut the swimming flowers with the basket Jennifer had made for me. I also didn’t forget the turtle blood.
I spread the blood around the area where the swimming flowers grow near the swamp, and then I cut off the petals as they close. It’s not much work, but it’s really hard on the back.
Both Cher and I gave up early. When I tried to get Jennifer to do it after she’d finished clearing the dishes, she was surprisingly quick at it.
“You’re good at it. Maybe you’re better suited to be a farmer than a priest?”
“Please stop it!”
Jennifer suddenly became angry.
“I don’t have good memories of my hometown…”
So Jennifer’s family were farmers, too. I’m the second son of a farmer, and my parents were often angry with me.
“Makyo, don’t talk about unpleasant things.”
Cher doesn’t want to talk about her hometown, either.
“I guess that’s how it is. Sorry.”
I cut the swimming flowers until almost evening and filled a large basket.
Since there was no jar to store them in, I dug a hole in the ground, plastered the walls with clay, and baked it with magic. When it hardened, I put the swimming flowers inside to store them. When the sap comes out, I’ll be able to get the sleeping powder.
If only I had a pot…
The potter of the demonic land, Hel, slept exhausted in the cave.
She was making bricks by filling a mold with a mixture of clay, dead leaves, and weeds. She seemed to be experimenting with different proportions. The bricks, still soft, were lined up in front of the cave. I wonder if they’ll be sun-dried bricks by tomorrow.
“D-d-do you think you could lend me some clothes?”
Sylvia, who was completely naked, asked Cher and Jennifer as she covered her breasts and crotch.
“Even if she is a slave, it’s not very presentable like this, so why don’t you lend her some clothes?”
“Yes.”
Cher pulled up some clothes that were a little larger.
At sunset, in front of the campfire, I opened a bag I had picked up outside the demonic land. Inside, besides preserved food and a knife, was a letter. It said something like, “Order to leave the territory.”
Without hesitation, I burned it in the fire.
