Chapter 41 – Day 40 of Living in the Demonic Land
It was early in the morning before the sun had risen. There was a smell of burning in the air.
Did Cher burn the bread? Even if she made a mistake, there’s still flour left. I’ll just sleep a little longer.
“Makyo!”
Cher burst into my room.
“Did you burn the bread?”
“No! Come!”
When I came out of the cave, I saw that the eastern sky was red, and black smoke was rising.
“Is it a forest fire?”
Jennifer and the others also looked at the sky with worried expressions.
To the west of the cave was the entrance, and beyond that was a military training facility.
For the time being, I decided to go to the scene, covering my mouth and nose with a cloth.
The green tigers and golden bats in the forest also made growling noises as if they were worried.
“It doesn’t look like my demonic land is on fire.”
The fire was on the other side of the stream. It doesn’t look like it’s on my land.
As a neighborly gesture, I’m going to take a look at the military training facility.
On the way, I see a fire.
It looks like the Vespa Hornet nest I found yesterday and the surrounding trees have caught fire.
“I hope it’s not because of Cher’s smoldering fire magic that they caught fire…?”
This is bad. I’ll have to put out the fire and apologize.
“What! I thought there would be a really strong monster because it was called a demonic land, but it’s not that strong at all!”
The armored mage with the staff laughed out loud.
“With Great Mage-sama, this insect nest is like a pile of garbage!”
“What a wonderful wide-area magic!”
There also seemed to be some men who looked like his subordinates.
“At least it’s good that this didn’t happen because of us…”
I was about to leave quickly when I was spotted by the captain on his fihorse.
“Makyo-dono!”
Soldiers stood behind the captain.
“Whoa! Captain! It wasn’t me! It was that guy over there!”
I couldn’t help but explain.
“Hmm? That guy…”
The captain got off his fihorse and walked over to the mage.
“Are you the guards of East Kenya?”
“You! Who do you think you’re talking to?”
The mage’s subordinate lashed out at the captain.
“Whoever you are, put out this fire at once. This is military property.”
“What? This is demonic land, isn’t it?”
“No, this is just a forest. Put out the fire immediately.”
The mage’s subordinate was unable to say anything in response to the captain’s words.
“Wait, there was a nest of Vespa hornets here, so we exterminated them. Our messenger was attacked by a swarm of Vespa Hornets.”
The mage stepped forward.
“I see. But if we leave it like this, the whole forest will burn down. It seems like it’s causing trouble for the neighbors, too.”
The captain looked at me.
“Who the hell are you?”
The mage looked at me and asked.
“I’m the landlord of the demonic land beyond this point.”
“You! The guy living in our East Kenya territory without permission?”
“No, I bought the land from a real estate agent.”
“A real estate agent? Do you think that kind of bullshit will work?”
“From my point of view, it looks like you’re the one who’s being ridiculous if you think you became lord by turning the elves away.”
“What! Our Lord was chosen by the people of East Kenya! You’re disrespectful! I’ll turn you into charcoal!”
Oh no, I’ve made him angry.
“If you turn me into charcoal, the fire will spread even more. Wouldn’t it be better to put out the fire first? The wind is also starting to blow.”
The fire is fanned by the wind and burns the cloak of the mage’s subordinate, but I wonder if he’s noticed.
“Hey, you’re burning!”
“What? It’s hot!”
The mage’s subordinate rolled on the ground and extinguished the fire.
“Damn it! Remember this! I’ll be back for sure!”
The mage dragged his subordinate and ran off.
“Hey, wait! Come back and put out the fire!”
The captain shouted, but the mage and his subordinates didn’t come back.
“Should we go after them?”
The soldier asked the captain.
“No, that’s okay. I’ll report to headquarters. Excuse me, Makyo-kun, can you help put out the fire?”
“Sure. It’s a hassle for you to come to us. Just wait a moment. I’ll get my staff.”
I ran back to the demonic land cave.
“How is it?”
Cher asked me as I ran back.
“There’s a fire in the forest just outside the demonic land. I have to get back there right away. Didn’t you say there was still a swamp bird’s magic stone somewhere?”
“Yes, yes, here it is.”
Cher brought out the swamp bird’s magic stone from the depths of the cave. The swamp bird magic stone has the effect of water magic. I cut a branch from a nearby tree and used a knife to carve a base for the stone.
“Should we go too?”
Jennifer asked.
“No, that’s okay. If it doesn’t work, I’ll just throw some slime on it to stop the fire.”
Once the magic stone was in place, I immediately headed towards the fire.
“Hey, use a robe! You’ll get burned in that outfit!”
Hel told me, and I realized that I was only wearing shorts and a running top. Hel took off her robe and tossed it to me.
“Thanks. I’ll give it back to you later.”
I took it and put it on while running.
Huh? I think I just saw something amazing, but was it my imagination? It looked like Hel, who had taken off her robe, had tattoos all over her body…
Well, that’s not important right now.
As an insurance policy, I caught some slime in the stream and brought it to the scene of the fire.
At the scene, there seemed to be a soldier who could use water magic, and he created a mist.
“Thank you for your hard work.
“I’m sorry, but my level is not high enough, so I can only do my best to prevent the fire from spreading.”
The soldier who released the mist explained the situation.
“Okay, let’s do what we can for now.”
I threw the slime into the burning fire and released a water ball from the staff I had just made using water magic.
Splash! Splash!
The water ball gradually reduced the intensity of the fire. As I extinguished the fire, I realized that if I released it with my magic power, I could make a slightly larger water ball.
“Once I understand, it’s up to me.”
I created a number of large water balls and released them all at once onto the burning fire.
After about an hour, the fire was extinguished, and all that was left was a black burnt cliff.
To be honest, I thought it was a big fire because I could see it from a distance, but it seems the burnt area wasn’t that big. I wonder if the Vespa Hornet’s nest was burned down very much.
“Sorry. You saved us.”
The captain thanked me. Both he and I were covered in soot. The robe Hel had lent me was slightly burned.
“I’ll get you a replacement robe right away. Hey, bring that too!”
The captain wiped himself with a cloth while giving instructions to the soldiers.
A few minutes later, the soldiers returned with a large number of barrels and bottles of alcohol.
“This is the alcohol we make. If you want, you can take some.”
“You make alcohol in the military facility?”
“Yes. I don’t think it’s known in the capital. You know, when you’re in a place like this on the frontier, you need to have these kinds of skills, right?”
The captain said as he handed me a bag full of alcohol bottles.
“I was really saved this time. If I told them the forest had burned down, I would have lost my job. If you see those East Kenyans, please come to the training facility immediately. Our entire unit will be there to drive them back.”
“Thank you!”
I tucked the alcohol and a spare robe under my arm and headed back to the demonic land.
In the cave, while Jennifer and Sylvia were making the baskets, Hel was building a kiln by stacking bricks a short distance away. The two seemed uncomfortable with Hel’s tattooed skin. For some reason, Cher wasn’t there.
“Sorry, Hel, your robe got burned. Is this okay as a replacement?”
“Yeah, it’s fine.”
“Also, I managed to get a couple of bottles. We’ll open them at dinner.”
I said and took a bottle of alcohol out of a bag.
“Okay.”
As I thought, it was heavy.
“What is it? What’s going on? Where is Cher?”
“She ran off somewhere after she asked me the reason for my tattoo.”
“What is she doing?”
I looked far and wide for Cher, but she didn’t seem to be anywhere.
“Makyo, the truth is that I am cursed. This tattoo is a sign to contain the curse. Because of it, I can hardly use magic power. And I can’t use magic at all.”
“Oh, is that so? I guess it doesn’t cause you any problems in your daily life, right?”
“My daily life is fine…”
“Then that’s fine. As the landlord, I don’t want anything else, but it’s okay as long as you make me a healing potion that will make me money. There’s not going to be a huge influx of ghosts, is there?”
“I don’t think so…”
Only the things you don’t understand are scary.
When I handed her the robe, Hel put it on without saying a word.
“You guys, make sure you pay your rent too!”
I turned and said to Jennifer and Sylvia.
“Ma-Ma-Makyo, to tell you the truth, I can’t use magic that well either. I can only use magic that doesn’t hurt my body or magic that lets me break through my limits for a few seconds.”
“What? Just because you’re in a demonic land doesn’t mean you have to use magic. Just do whatever you can to make money. As long as you pay the rent, I have nothing to say!”
“Rent, rent, you keep saying that! I know!”
Jennifer replied.
After that, I helped Hel build a kiln while waiting for Cher.
At dinner time, Cher finally came running home. In her hand was a round net-like object made of wood and string. It looked like a tool that could be used for something magical.
“Hel! Let’s catch the curse with this and put it under Makyo’s bed!”
Cher said excitedly, grabbing Hel’s shoulder.
“Cher! You’ve been doing this the whole time?”
“Ah! Why is Makyo back so early?”
“Hey!”
As I ran after Cher, the sun went down.
“But Makyo is afraid of things she can’t see, so I thought it would be interesting.”
Anyway, I tied Cher up with a rope and hung her from a tree to question her.
“Don’t think this is funny. What is this anyway? Can you catch a curse with it?”
“Yes, it’s a demon’s tool. It’s made of elm wood.”
“So you weren’t afraid of my curse?”
Hel asked Cher.
“I am not afraid. I, too, am cursed because I belong to the Demon King’s family, ah!”
“The Demon King’s? Cher, you should go back to the demon race’s country.”
“Back, back.”
“Really. You should think a little more!”
“Eehh!”
As we all ate dinner, Cher used magic to cut the rope and entered the circle.
“She’s so carefree. Really.”
