Chapter 47 – Day 46 of Living in the Demonic Land

When I woke up in the morning and left the cave, Cher was baking bread.

“Good morning.”

“Morning.”

Sylvia must have done her morning exercise because she was sweating profusely and holding a wooden sword under her arm. She covered her chest when she saw me. I think it’s time she got some armor.

Jennifer is cutting smoked meat and eating some of it. I’m worried she’s gaining weight.

Hel hasn’t woken up yet. Maybe elves have low blood pressure.

It’s just another day in demonic land.

I wash my face in the swamp and look around the devastated fields.

“I guess I’ll have to give up growing vegetables. I think it’d be quicker to look for edible plants.”

I guess I’ll have to buy some wheat and potatoes.

The sunlight rising in the east reflected off the swamp and was blinding. I finally felt a sense of accomplishment from the battle to defend the demonic land.

“What shall we do today? If possible, I would like to continue working on the kiln…”

Hel asked as she ate her breakfast.

“No, no. Let’s clean up first.”

“So we’re going to collect the magic stones and the meat in the flower garden, right?”

Jennifer asked Cher.

“That’s right!”

“I have to go and report to the captain at the training facility. Have all the people from East Kenya gone home?”

“Well, I didn’t see anything near the demonic land forest.”

Sylvia, who had been training in the morning, confirmed this.

“I guess they’ve gone home. Maybe the second group from East Kenya is coming. I’m going for a run first. I’ll join you later to help clean up.”

“Understood.”

I walked to the training facility with a basket of cam fruit and meat wrapped in butterbur leaves that Jennifer had made as a gift and explained the situation to them.

I walked through the maze I had made on the hill and crossed a bridge over a stream. The bridge was a log bridge built by the East Kenyan soldiers.

After leaving the demonic land, I continued through the forest. The ground had been trampled, and I couldn’t see any monsters. It seems that the effects of the invasion of the demonic land are felt in places like this. The army would be in trouble if they had to defeat even the monsters that were there for training.

I made my way through the forest and came out into the fields of the training facility.

The soldiers were working in the fields. The captain was among them, and when I raised my hand, he greeted me like an uncle, saying, “Oh, Makyo-kun, you’re here!”

I wonder if he still doesn’t know.

“Good morning.”

“Good morning. You’re early.”

The captain stopped working and gave instructions to his subordinates, saying, “Finish up later.”

“Actually, yesterday, soldiers from East Kenya invaded the demonic land.”

“What? Is that true? We were also on alert but didn’t receive such information. And how is the demonic land?”

“It’s fine. The terrain has changed a bit.”

“Has the terrain changed that much?”

The captain was surprised, so the soldiers in the field looked up and looked at us.

“I built a maze and trapped them in it.”

“Oh, so Makyo-kun and the others changed the terrain. What happened to the soldiers from East Kenya?”

“It seems that they went home because there were about 150 injured and dead in the demonic land. By the way, the magician who was there before also came, so I warned him not to come back.”

“Looks like you were successful in defending it. Wait a minute. How many people are there in the demonic land now?”

“Well, including me, there are five of us.”

“Five people took on 150 people?”

“It looks like there were more, but that’s about all that came into the demonic land. So we used everything, the terrain, the monsters, the plants, everything.”

The captain nodded his head and smiled broadly.

“Captain, if what he says is true, then East Kenya must be short of defenders at the moment…”

The captain’s subordinate, who had been listening, joined the conversation.

“Ah, call the scout unit and have them run to East Kenya. If we end up in a situation where we can’t defend the border with the Elf country because our military strength has been sapped by the demonic land, then the lord will be in trouble.”

As the captain gave this order, his men ran toward the building.

“Now we can be sure that the Kingdom of Estinia won’t try anything against the Elf country. Thank you for breaking their noses for us.”

The captain bowed deeply to me. From our point of view, we just sent them away because they had come so suddenly.

“Oh, here’s a gift for you. It’s fruit from the demonic land and monster meat. The fruit will bite you, so be careful when you eat it.”

It’s uncomfortable when he keeps bowing to me. Let’s change the subject.

“No, I’m sorry. It’s our job to stop the East Kenya soldiers in the first place. Besides, if you’re so considerate, we’re in trouble.”

The captain scratched his head and accepted.

“Hey, get some sacks of flour ready. And some vegetables too! If you need anything else, just let me know.”

“Thank you very much. It’s difficult to grow crops in the demonic land, so vegetables would be most welcome.”

“Makyo-kun, you should be a little more greedy. Oh, that’s right! The territorial rights certificate should arrive at this training facility tonight.”

“I see. That’s good.”

Now, the demonic land is finally officially mine. Let’s collect more and more rent.

“You are now officially a lord, Makyo-kun. You’ve joined the ranks of the nobility!”

“So I’m going to become a noble?”

“I believe so. Whether you become a margrave or a count of the demonic land is up to the king. If you become a noble, we will be able to move around to a certain extent, so I don’t think you will be attacked.”

“That’s good to hear, but do I have to go to the royal capital to become a noble?”

“Of course, there will be a ceremony, so you will have to go. They’ll probably prepare a carriage for you. I have escorted a noble’s carriage before.”

This is my first trip since I came to the demonic land, and it’s a trip to become a noble. I want to tell my old self, who was wasting his time in the Adventurer’s Guild, that it was a good thing that I bought this property. No, I wonder if it was a good thing.

“When do we leave?”

“Tomorrow at the earliest. I can prepare a carriage right away.”

“Tomorrow? I have a life in the demonic land, and my feelings haven’t caught up yet…”

“It will be fine. All the king has to do is put a sword on your shoulder and say, ‘I appoint you as margrave.’ I think you can just borrow some clothes. If you want, the military will prepare them for you. No, that’s better. I owe you so much that I’ll write a letter to the military headquarters in the royal capital.”

The captain wiped his sweat and walked towards the building.

My schedule is being decided by the minute. Will I really become a noble? I don’t feel it at all.

“Captain, how long will it take to get to the capital?”

I asked, following the captain. I have to prepare myself mentally until then.

“About five days, I think. Right, you have to prepare for your journey as well, Makyo-kun. How long will it take to get back to the demonic land from here?”

“No, it wouldn’t take me half a day on foot.”

The captain looked at my feet and was a little surprised.

“Then come back in the evening. We’ll also choose an escort and prepare the travel expenses.”

“I see! You’ll need money for the trip, right?”

That’s right. This isn’t the demonic land, so there are places to stay. You’ll need some money. But do I have any money?

“Oh, the government will pay for your travel and lodging, so don’t worry. Just bring some clothes.”

“Clothes?”

“You don’t change your clothes when you live in the demonic land?”

“No, I do!”

I think I only have about three pairs of underwear left. The rest are all in pretty bad shape. I guess I’ll have to wash them at the inns along the way. I wish I could buy some new ones, but I don’t have the money.

“So I just need to get ready for the trip, right?”

“That’s right.”

“Okay, I’ll go back to the demonic land for a while.”

I said that, and then I quickly left, exchanging the bag of flour and vegetables the soldiers had prepared for me for some souvenirs.

After about half an hour, I arrived at the flower garden of the sleeping flowers in the demonic land.

Everyone was wearing masks and collecting the monsters by pouring palm sap on the sleeping flowers.

“Oh, is the work progressing?”

“No, the flowers are sucking their blood.”

“The flesh is spoiling. I thought we were just collecting the magic stones and the fur.”

Cher and Jennifer replied.

“The rotting meat and fat are useful for raising beneficial insects. Could you tell them that, Makyo?”

“B-b-but as an arms dealer, I can’t overlook monster bones.”

Hel and Sylvia try to collect everything.

“Sorry for interrupting your work, but I have to go to the royal capital to become a noble by tomorrow.”

“”””So?””””

All four of them had the same reaction.

“I was told to come back in the evening. I have to prepare. Does anyone have money and a backpack?”

“I think I have a little. If the backpack wasn’t lost in the monster attack, it should be in the cave.”

Jennifer was the only one I could count on.

“Can I borrow it?”

“Sure. Then let’s take care of the monsters here before lunch.”

“Okay, got it!”

I put on a mask and went to work. Using P.J.’s knife, I made quick work of it. I sliced open the belly to get at the magic stone, then tossed the guts where the plants would devour them on their own. All I had to do was cut off the head and make an incision in the leg to skin it. That’s what I thought, but all I could get out of the lamia was the magic stone. I just left the rest to Hel and Sylvia, who wanted it.

“It’s easy when there’s no blood.”

Cher said as she stuffed the magic stone into a bag.

“Can you help me just a little?”

“I-i-it’s so heavy…”

Hel and Sylvia complained.

When I asked them where they were going to take it, they said they were going to throw the monster’s flesh and bones into a pit and bury it. That way, beneficial insects will come and clean up the bones.

If everyone works together, it won’t take too long.

The work was finished after lunch, and we all returned to the cave.

Over lunch, we talked about what had happened while I was gone.

“I can’t get out of this demonic land anyway.

“There’s a lot of work to be done, that’s for sure.”

“We need to build a kiln.”

“I’ll go look for materials for the armor.”

It seems that all four of them are busy, and no one is trying to get out of the demonic land.

“Well then, try not to die. I’ll pay you back later, Jennifer.”

“Oh, yes, I understand. For now, I don’t have any use for it in the demonic land.”

I left the demonic land when I had taken a nap, and the sun was beginning to set.

When I went to the training facility, I found that the certificate of ownership and the letter of appointment as Margrave had arrived. I was told to use the carriage at the training facility.

“We are in the process of selecting guards. If you need any supplies, let us know.”

The captain said this, so I asked for two sets of clothes.

I took a bath and slept in a room at the training facility that had been prepared for me that day. I thought I would be too excited to sleep, but as soon as I tried not to think about it too much, I felt sleepy.
