Chapter 3 – Business Conclusion

After being surprised by the pile of gold coins, Wataru froze for a moment.

He opened his eyes wide and swallowed hard.

The golden glitter was dazzling and too attractive for Wataru, who had never seen a lump of gold before.

However, the merchant William must also have been afraid that the negotiations would fail.

He asked for Wataru’s opinion.

“What do you think? If it’s more than that, it will be difficult for our store to handle it.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I was just thinking. As you can see, I’m not from around here, so I’m going to be honest and ask you, how much is this gold worth?”

“Hmm. Value… I think the annual income of an average craftsman is about five gold coins.”

“That much?”

Eh, isn’t that too much?

After all, a few hundred yen worth of sugar in the supermarket is worth ten million yen here, huh?

Wataru was even more speechless and surprised, but his face was furrowed, and he looked worried.

William began to tell him about the decision he had made regarding the purchase price.

He probably wanted to gain trust by making it seem like a fair transaction.

“Yes. This is such high-quality sugar with a high degree of purity, so it has a high scarcity value, and we added a little more than the general market price. The people who would buy it would probably be nobles or large trading companies. If you could negotiate with them directly, you might be able to sell it for a higher price, but you would also need connections and a track record to negotiate. If you took it to another trading company, there would probably only be a limited number of places that could offer a higher price than our store.”

“I understand! Then I’ll leave it to you!”

The negotiation is finished.

As long as he sells at a high price, there’s no problem.

He doesn’t want to risk the possibility of being haggled over by talking too much about the situation.

Wataru shakes William’s hand firmly.

He was about to bow and end the meeting but changed his mind at the last moment.

It was an unusual handshake, but it didn’t feel bad.

“(Am I going to be rich now? And I can get as much sugar as I want, and if I want, I can even bring in other ingredients.)”

The sugar on the counter was moved to the back, and money was given to Wataru instead.

A smile appeared on Wataru’s face.

“Then I’ll separate some of it into silver and copper coins to make it easier to use.”

“Oh, thank you. That’s a great help.”

“Not at all; it’s a good deal.”

William fills the leather pouch with gold coins.

When Wataru receives the bag, which is tied with a string and bulging, he is surprised by its weight.

He thinks about it and realizes that it’s no wonder it’s heavy since it’s made of gold.

He puts it in his backpack with a wry smile.

“Also, I’m sorry to be so forward, but are you alone?”

“Yes, but is something wrong?”

“Normally, I wouldn’t pry, but you don’t seem to know much about this area.”

“Yes, I suppose so. You can tell, can’t you?”

“Yes, I could tell even before we started talking business.”

He acted like a tourist.

An experienced merchant would have seen through him at a glance.

Because he understood that, Wataru was not surprised by William’s words.

“What do you think? If you like it, this is also a good opportunity. If you need help from our company, we will be happy to help you.”

“Is that okay?”

“Of course. If you are worried about it, I would be happy if you could give something back for the next transaction.”

“…Well, it would still be a help.”

It was probably a joke, but Wataru took it seriously.

He didn’t know his left hand from his right.

Getting a foothold in the new country was very important.

Without a visa or a passport, he was essentially the same as a tourist abroad, not knowing where the police or hospitals were or what kind of services he could expect.

Information was more important than anything else.

“Since you will be using our shop in the future, I will tell you, but I recommend that you either hire a bodyguard or buy a slave. The area is safe, but the side streets are dangerous and your clothes will attract a lot of attention.”

“I-I see. Thank you for your advice.”

“(I didn’t know I was in such a dangerous place. I guess I’ll have to be more careful than when I travel abroad.)”

He had just arrived here, but when he was told that his safety was in danger, he felt uneasy.

He had planned to continue exploring the city, but he began to worry about whether he would be okay.

He had heard stories of Japanese people being pickpocketed or robbed, even overseas.

There was no guarantee that this place was any safer.

“If you’ve just arrived, I can introduce you to a reliable place where you can pay by the day or month.”

“I see. I’ll think about it for a while. If it seems necessary, please let me know.”

He also had the option of going through the gate and returning to Japan, taking all his belongings with him.

It would be too hasty to make a snap decision.

“Of course. I’ll tell you the location first. If you mention my name, they won’t do anything bad to you.”

“Thank you for taking care of everything.”

“When can you bring the sugar next time? If possible, it would be great if you could bring it within a month.”

“That is definitely possible. If you like, I can bring it tomorrow.”

“Oh no… As expected, it would take some time to sell it and get the money.”

It hardly costs anything to start.

If it were possible to travel between this world and the next, he would have rushed back today, not tomorrow, but William’s expression was filled with surprise.

“I see. It’s an expensive thing. My apologies.”

“So you still have stock… It was the right decision to set a fair price… It was a good deal. We look forward to your next visit.”

“By the way, do you do this every time a customer leaves the store?”

“Of course we do. It’s the symbol of our company.”

After muttering to himself, Wataru smiled wryly at William, who had cheerfully raised his voice.

William, however, answered Wataru’s question with a broad smile.

He’s a good man but a bit strange.

Wataru never said these thoughts out loud.
