Chapter 62 – Day 7 of Exploration

Even though everyone had their own rooms and could eat in their own rooms, for some reason, we all ate breakfast together around the campfire.

“Did you stay up all night, Hel?”

Hel eats bread, fighting back a yawn.

“Yes, I let it dry in my room.”

It seems that this time, she wants to dry it before baking it. I guess she doesn’t dry it outside because the monsters would destroy it.

“Don’t you have to let the airflow through the room?”

“Oh, I left the wyvern’s magic stone staff in there. It was almost the size of a piece of junk, so I used it.”

The wyvern magic stone produces wind magic.

“Chel, let me use your room until noon. I can’t sleep in my own room.”

“Sure. Makyo, we’re going upriver in the south this morning.”

Yesterday, I was redecorating, so I couldn’t go exploring, but today, I want to go exploring.

“Oh, is Sylvia coming too?”

“Y-y-yeah!”

She was eating breakfast, fully prepared with a hammer made of monster bones and a breastplate made of tanned leather.

“What about Jennifer?”

“I’m thinking of making a bag out of the leather Sylvia gave me. You can’t carry heavy things in a basket, after all.”

She seems to be thinking about a lot of things.

After breakfast, the three of us—Sylvia in the lead, followed by Chel and me—headed south.

The monsters and plants in the demonic land are sensitive to the scent of the weak. Maybe Sylvia emits that kind of pheromone. While Chel and I destroyed everything, she complained that she couldn’t test her weapons.

“Get stronger. I want to keep up this pace until we get to the anthill.”

“Yeah, yeah, you should try it out there.”

“I-i-it’s difficult!”

Chel slapped Sylvia’s backside to hurry her up.

When we reached the river, we swam to the other side and headed for the anthill.
As usual, there were rock crocodiles in the river, but when they saw us, they fled downstream.

“Hey, what are we going to eat for dinner?”

It seemed that Chel wanted to eat rock crocodile meat again tonight.

“No, we still have some left, right? That’s fine.”

“Dried meat? It’s delicious, but…”

“Maybe we should build a drying room.”

Sylvia was right, and it might be a good idea to have a room where we could dry things like Hel’s jars and meat.

Sylvia had almost been bitten by the carp monster hiding in the river, but Chel had saved her by freezing it for a moment with magic.

“You could do that?”

“Because I can’t lose to Makyo.”

Sylvia, unaware that she had been saved, climbed out of the river and said, “Light armor is better.”

After eating some light, sweet honey from an anthill, we headed upstream. As we listened to the sound of the river and walked slowly, we discovered an open space in the dark forest.

“It’s a flower garden of sleeping flowers.”

The flower garden is filled with the rotting bones of monsters. We covered our mouths with cloth and walked on, avoiding the flower garden.

“There’s another flower garden.”

We continued on and found another flower garden with sleeping flowers. Even the footprints of giant monsters become flower gardens?

“T-t-this is strong…”

“What?”

“S-s-sleeping flowers. Don’t other plants grow there?”

If you say it like that, it’s true. The plants are fighting each other on the ground. It seems like it would be okay if other plants grew there, but in the flower garden, only sleeping flowers grow.

“Should we also plant around the cave?”

“If we make a field of sleeping flowers, won’t monsters and plants stay away? Huh?”

We’re not the only ones who have thought of this. The ancients must have made their home in such a place.

“Let’s search the area! There might be ruins nearby!”

I couldn’t help but get excited.

“Makyo! Lamia!”

I didn’t realize it until Chel told me, but I could see a group of Lamia crawling out of the depths of the forest. I ran to the river and hid on the opposite bank. Even though I had become stronger in the demonic land, a group of monsters wasn’t an opponent I wanted to fight unless there was a trap or a strategy.

“Where is Sylvia?”

I asked Chel, but she shook her head. I thought she had run away with us, but she wasn’t there.

“Did she hide in the trees?”

The Lamia were already gathering on the opposite bank. I could see eight of them. I had defeated a king anaconda with my saber before, but it was daylight now, and the Lamia were moving fast.

“What should we do?”

“For now, it’s best to just leave them alone. I think the Lamia are only here to drink water.”

It seemed that we were the only ones who thought we should just watch quietly, and the monsters of the demonic land had noticed the Lamia, who were off their guard.

As soon as the little Lamia put its mouth to the river, a big carp monster bit it on the head. Slime also jumped out of the river and stuck to the Lamia. The Lamia’s companions hurriedly tried to pull the little Lamia away from the river, but the carp monster was strong, and it took a long time.

Meanwhile, the rock crocodile, which had been fleeing downstream, saw its chance and approached.

In the demonic land, the law is that the weak are eaten by the strong.

The Rock Crocodile bit the arm of the Lamia, who was trying to pull the carp monster away.

The other Lamia locked eyes with the Rock Crocodile and tried to petrify it, but the Rock Crocodile’s round eyes could only see Lamia’s arm. The Lamia wrapped its tail around the Rock Crocodile in an attempt to strangle it.

“Raaaah!”

At that moment, Sylvia’s battle cry was heard.

“Hey, hey, are we going to join this fight?!”

“There is no choice.”

A fireball created by Chel’s magic fell on the opposite shore.

I jumped and landed on the opposite shore as well. I punched the monsters with my fist, concentrating my magic power while trying not to look up.

When the fire magic died down and the smoke cleared, the battle on the riverbank was over.

The carp monster floated down the river and was swept away, the rock crocodile was blown somewhere into the forest, and the Lamia was knocked down and unconscious.

“Makyo, you went too far!”

Come to think of it, there have been times when I’ve put too much magic power into a blow and ended up ripping out a part of their body. Because of that, a pool of blood had formed on the ground, and the moth monster had come over.

“That’s probably right. Ah, Sylvia!”

When I called out, a voice came from under the fallen Lamia, “Ugh!”

“I-I-I’m here!”

Saying this, Sylvia came out while removing Lamia’s tail, and she was covered in blood.

“Are you okay? Chel, healing magic!”

“N-n-no, it’s not my blood! Don’t look into my eyes! I drank Lamia’s blood!”

She seems to have copied Lamia’s ability. It’s annoying that you can copy abilities without your own will.

“I-I-I think the effect will wear off by nightfall!”

“All right. Let’s clean up first.”

“Shall we throw the body into the flower garden and let it sleep?”

As Chel suggested, we collected the magic stone from the motionless Lamia and threw it into the sleeping flower garden, then let it sleep. I put the sleeping flowers around its mouth so it will take some time before it wakes up.

“Oh! A-a-an ancient ruin!”

Sylvia suddenly exclaimed.

“What is it?”

“I-i-in Lamia’s memories, there was an ancient ruin. Over there!”

Sylvia, who had been healed by Chel’s magic, suddenly started to run.

“Hey, where are you going?”

“F-f-follow me!”

Following her, we arrived at the ruins of a temple with only three fallen pillars at the end of a rough path. It seems that Lamia used to live here, and the bones of monsters and petrified monsters can be seen everywhere. There is also moss growing here and there, and there are certainly pillars and a flat floor with a pattern drawn on it.

“It’s an ancient ruin! Sylvia, that’s amazing. Can you also copy memories?”

“N-n-no, this is the first time for me as well.”

If she can copy the memories of the monsters, it might be easier to find the location of the ruins.

“Meanwhile, we’ve found our first ruin.”

We clearly found traces of human habitation.

It was already past noon. We decided to return to the cave for now and return to the ruins tomorrow.
