Chapter 73 – Day 18 of Exploration

I woke up Chel before dawn and went to the desert to practice building huts. I carried Chel, who was still mostly asleep and jumped over the river where the rock crocodiles had disappeared, and it started to rain.

It was quite eavy rain, but there was no sign of Chel waking up, so I kept running. I thought my body might get cold, but thanks to the crocodile skin, I didn’t have to worry about it. I have to use it as much as possible to soften the leather.

Even in the dark, I can roughly tell where the monsters and plants are by the light of the magic stone lanterns and the sounds they make.

A large snail was moving in the rain. It made its way through the trees, so the path was easy to follow. Of course, it was also an easy path for the monsters to hunt their prey.

I was attacked by a king anaconda and a fire-breathing lizard, but if I hadn’t defeated them, the surrounding herd of treants would have awakened, and the terrain would have changed. In the demonic land where the weak are preyed upon by the strong, even the smallest thing can trigger a huge battle between the monsters.

The rain stopped.

In the humid air, I could hear the sound of insects moving around. It might be a swarm of Arachne. I turned off the magic stone lantern and threw a cam fruit in the direction of the sound, and I could hear footsteps as if they were jumping.

I had a bad experience with Arachne once, so I decided to take a big detour.

There were a lot of insect-like monsters, but I tried to get past them without fighting as much as possible.

After about an hour without a break, I reached the desert.

“Hoam! Good morning!”

Chel, on my back, woke up with a yawn.

The eastern sky was beginning to brighten. The wind had died down, so now was our chance.

“Okay, then, let’s try to build a hut out of sand.”

“No, no, Makyo, where is the bread? When I wake up in the morning, I’ll make some bread, right? Or rather, where are we?”

While Chel was confused, I put my hand on the sand on the ground and tried to make a wall with magic.

Zuzuzuzu…

Only a small pointed pile was created, and the sand fell back to the ground.

“Chel, teach me how to make a sand wall with magic.”

“Makyo, calm down and tell me what’s going on.”

Chel warned me with a slightly mature voice.

The atmosphere was serious, so I explained the situation to him.

“Well, wouldn’t it be better to have a house made of sand to cross the desert? Yesterday, I asked the people outside the demonic land. And they told me that if you make a wall with magic and join it together, it becomes a hut.”

“Yes, yes. So you kidnapped me while I was sleeping and took me to the desert?”

“That’s what happened!”

When I said that, Chel kicked the sand while saying, “Damn it!”

“Stop sulking and teach me how to make a sand wall quickly. The forest will retreat, and it will get hot in the afternoon.”

“Mm~, here!”

Chel showed me how to make a sand wall with magic. However, it collapsed within a few seconds.

“As I thought, it collapses quickly. Let’s try this then.”

I took out the honeybee magic stone and gave it to Chel.

“Shouldn’t I teach Makyo how to make a sand wall first?”

“Well, can’t we just see how it turns out first?”

Chel had no choice but to take the honeybee magic stone and make another sand wall.

Zuzuzuzu…

A sticky sand wall was created, but it still collapsed.

“Is it wrong to make a wall?”

“No, I don’t know. For now, Makyo, why don’t you try practicing making a wall with magic?”

“Okay. How do you do that?”

According to Chel’s instructions, it seems that all you have to do is create a thin film-like wall. I tried, but I couldn’t do it at all.

“Why not? Are you making fun of me?”

“I’m not. I’m just not teaching you well.”

“Then just make a bump here!”

Chel laid down a piece of string to make a long, narrow rectangle on the floor.

“How can you do something so delicate?”

Even as I said that, I tried it.

Gugu… Gugugu… Zuza!!!

The sand began to spill out of the rectangle divided by the string, and it became impossible to contain it.

“Are you stupid?”

“Then what do you want me to do?”

“You have to make a wall! How can you make a sand fountain? You have to… sandwich the space like this!”

Chel keeps asking me impossible things, but since she’s my master in magic, I have no choice but to listen to her.

I made another rectangle with the string on the sand and lifted the ground while sandwiching the space.

Zushuuuuu!!!

Sand spouted out in the shape of a rectangle on the ground, forming a wall that extended to the sky.

“No, it’s true that it becomes a wall as it spews out. When will this end?”

Sand continued to spew from the ground.

Even after about five minutes, it was still spewing and didn’t stop.

“Isn’t that enough? As long as it blocks the sandstorm, isn’t that enough? We just need to solidify this wall on all sides.”

“Well, that’s true, but you never know when this will be over. You could suddenly be blown away while you’re sleeping.”

“Well, why don’t you make a magic circle? I think it would be hard to break if you carved that magic circle into the wooden boards.”

“I don’t really understand what you mean. Are you saying that we should make a wooden house?”

“That’s not it at all!

I don’t really understand what’s going on, but it seems that as long as we can make the magic circle, everything will be okay. And Hel says she can decipher the magic circle for us.

“I’m glad we have such a talented inhabitant.”

“Let’s go home! I’m hungry!”

The forest is already receding.

We hurry into the forest and run north towards the cave. Unlike the way there, it’s easier now that Chel is awake.

The nocturnal monsters had disappeared, but the plants were moving energetically, and the day-active monsters, especially the reptilian ones, had started to move.

I built a magic wall with the earth I had just learned to use and blew fire-breathing lizards and baby dragons high into the air. Golden bats swooped down and grabbed them.

“What’s that?”

Chel, who was ahead of me, shouted.

When we returned to the rock crocodile river, there was a huge outbreak of crab monsters about the size of a medium-sized dog. Crab monsters were writhing everywhere. The rock crocodiles and green tigers ate them, but their stomachs didn’t suddenly expand.

The huge swarm of crab monsters was advancing toward the east. They didn’t care if their friends were eaten or trampled. From our point of view, it was a free-for-all.

“It’s a crab festival! Hurry up and get everyone over here!”

We went back to the cave, called the three people who were having breakfast, and caught crabs left and right.

Later, when I looked them up in P.J.’s notebook, I found out that they were a species called Christmas Island crabs. They sometimes appear in large numbers after it rains and then take a month to make their way to the sea. Only a few make it to the sea, but after a month, they grow to the size of a three-story building.

That day, we spent the whole day catching crabs. In the evening, while boiling the crabs, I told Hel about the magic circle on the sand wall, and she was amazed.

“Anyway, I won’t understand what’s happening unless you show me.”

She said.

The preparations for the desert crossing continue.
