Chapter 24 – Effect of the Healing Potion
Immediately after Ryota drank the potion, his body began to glow slightly.
It was a faint light, like fluorescent paint, and unless someone was staring at it, they probably wouldn’t notice it.
The light seemed to be concentrated in places like Ryota’s right elbow, left knee, waist, and hip joints.
“(What, Ryo-chan’s body is glowing!?)”
Wataru stared at Ryota in amazement, but Ryota also looked at his own body in amazement.
“Oh, this is… my body is hot!?”
“A-are you okay?”
“Y-yeah… It’s gone now. What is this?”
“I think it’s proof that the treatment worked.”
“Why is my body glowing? That’s weird. …..Doesn’t it hurt?”
Ryota, who had been making sharp comments, suddenly looked at his own arm.
The light had already faded.
And the next moment, he began to make suspicious movements, such as twisting his arm and turning his body as if in panic.
His expression was tense, his eyes wide open, and there was something desperate about his posture.
“S-seriously? No, it doesn’t hurt. This one, this one, too! Eh, my elbow straightening up!”
“Ryo-chan, everyone’s looking at you; you attract a lot of attention!”
“Oh, I’m sorry.”
The coffee shop inside the hotel was frequented by a rather mature crowd.
Ryota’s loud voice stood out.
However, if the pain he had suffered for so long had been instantly relieved, then the emotion he felt would not have been exaggerated.
Wataru couldn’t understand or sympathize with the struggles of an injured athlete.
That was because he had never taken sports that seriously.
Still, Wataru remembered Ryota’s face, which had looked gloomy for a while in the past when he’d suffered from an injury.
“Hey, can we leave the coffee shop for a while? I want to try to move my body around.”
“Of course. Shall we go to the park?”
“Yeah, let’s do that.”
Perhaps because he was surprised, Ryota, who usually spoke in standard Japanese, spoke in the Kansai dialect.
He pulled up a map on his smartphone and walked to a small park nearby.
It was a very desolate park with nothing but a swing and a clock, but fortunately, there were no other visitors, so it was actually quite comfortable for Ryota to move around.
In early summer’s hot and humid weather, Ryota demonstrates his excellent physical skills to the full.
He runs, jumps sideways, does full squats, throws a ball, swings a bat.
With each repetition of the various movements, Ryota lets out a scream of joy and breaks into a smile.
“Haha, what’s this? It doesn’t hurt at all! Seriously?”
“Ryo-chan, that was great!”
“Wow, this is amazing! Look at me, Wataru! I can do this move too!”
“Wow, a a round off backflip! I’ve seen that kind of performance at home runs before!”
“My body feels so light! I’m not afraid of anything anymore…”
“Wait a minute!”
“W-what is it, Wataru?”
“You can’t say that; it sounds dangerous!”
“I don’t know what you mean, but if you’re so desperate to stop me, I’ll stop.”
Wataru interrupted Ryota’s words in a panic, feeling as if he had almost set off a huge flag.
He didn’t really understand what was happening, but he felt that something was about to happen.
Ryota looked confused, wondering what he was being told, but it seemed that the feeling of joy was still stirring in his heart.
He nodded with a smile.
It seems that disaster has been averted.
From Ryota’s posture and body movements, it seemed almost certain that the potion had worked.
That’s why he had to ask Ryota to pay.
Although he believed that Ryota was not the type of person who would back down, it was not uncommon for people to react in unexpected ways when the time came.
Wataru asked the question while listening to his own heartbeat.
“Ryo-chan, what do you think of the effect?”
“Ah~”
Ryota let out a cry as if to say, “That’s right,” and then his expression suddenly became stern.
The thought “No way!” came to his mind.
“The pain is completely gone. I don’t know if it’s because of that or because my flexibility has improved, but I feel a strange sensation when I move. I think I’ll get used to it soon.”
“So you mean you actually felt the effect?”
“…Oh, I’m sorry for doubting you! This is definitely an amazing medicine. I didn’t tell my coach or trainer, but the truth is that my lower back and hip joints were really hurting, so I just pretended to be okay.”
“I see.”
“I can move with all my strength now! Thanks for talking to me. Look forward to the rest of the games this year. I’ll definitely show you my best performance.”
“I’m looking forward to it.”
“I’ll send you tickets. Come and see me play. Oh, I’ll pay you as promised, and I’ll introduce you to some people I know.”
“I came to see you play, so please don’t strike out every at-bat.”
“Don’t be stupid.”
With a broad smile on his face, Ryota raised his arm.
His well-trained biceps formed a bulge.
His appearance was filled with confidence.
Above all, Wataru was happy that he could help Ryota.
○○○
In order to transfer such a large amount of money (3.5 million yen), identification is required.
Since it was a weekday, they both went to the bank and had the money transferred to Wataru’s account.
In order to work as a web writer, Wataru filed a business registration as a sole proprietor.
If he hadn’t, the money would have been classified as miscellaneous income, and he would have had to pay a huge amount in taxes.
“(So much money for just one transaction…)”
When the amount of money in his bank account suddenly increased, he felt a warm sensation.
And this was just the beginning, not a one-time income.
In fact, it was just the start.
After all this time, Ryota’s initial excitement began to fade.
Nevertheless, he asked Wataru a question with a voice that showed that he was in a good mood.
“So, is there someone you want me to introduce you to?”
“I’ll leave it up to you to introduce me to someone. Someone from the same team who doesn’t play the same position or even someone from a different team or sport would be fine.”
“That’s a big help. To be honest, I don’t really want to help someone who plays the same position as me.”
“Of course not. Your livelihood is at stake.”
He agreed with Ryota’s comment.
Ryota breathed a sigh of relief that he hadn’t been criticized.
“Just like you didn’t trust me, other people might not trust me right away. But there are bound to be players who are struggling with injuries and would like to try anything, and there are also people who can provide the money for it. Please introduce me to those people.”
“I think there are more than you think. How about the contact information?”
“There is a bit of a situation, so it might take a while before we can get in touch. So could you send a message to my email?”
“Oh, that’s fine, but how far do you want to go with this ‘can’t get in touch’ thing?”
“I can’t really say where I can get this medicine. Sorry.”
“No, that’s only natural.”
He couldn’t honestly tell him about the existence of another world.
He had to make it up, but Ryota was satisfied with the answer.
In his imagination, he could have been negotiating with a tribe in the depths of the Amazon.
It’s not a bad guess.
“Well, I have to go home now because I need to stock up on supplies. Thank you for meeting me today and buying the product even though you were busy.”
“No, thank you. Thanks to you, I’ll be able to play baseball a lot more from now on. I never thought this day would come. You’re a lifesaver for me, so thank you.”
“I look forward to seeing your name in the news!”
They bowed to each other and left the place.
Wataru’s heart was filled with joy at having made a lot of money as he had planned, at having been able to help Ryota, and at the prospect of his business going well in the future.
“(I have to tell Mariel and Aire about this. They’ll be so happy!)”
His steps lightened, and he hurried home.
That year, Ryota Endo returned to the team and had an outstanding season, raising the spirits of the baseball world.
But that was still a long way off.
