Chapter 86 – Day 31 of Exploration
Early the next morning.
We decided to take care of the desert monsters that had eaten the flying monsters before breakfast and were now slowing down. Apparently, digestion takes energy, no matter what kind of monster it is. The temperature was low, and their movements were completely different from the night before, perhaps because their bodies were cold.
“Maybe it’s because they’re nocturnal?”
“Maybe. Should we take the bones and magic stones?”
We jumped down from the tower while moving our bodies.
“Yes, Sylvia will use them. They’re coming.”
We defeated the monsters that attacked us, burned them, and collected the bones and magic stones. A strange smell wafted through the abandoned village.
“Well, when Lipa wakes up, we’ll go for a run and then have breakfast.”
Lipa is still sleeping on the tower. Even during the night, monsters crawled towards him, and even now, a small scorpion monster is drowning after crashing into the water ball tent.
“I’ll chew some dried meat while I run. If we don’t get into the forest soon, we won’t be able to move at night.”
“That’s right.”
It’s difficult to move around the forest at night with Lipa.
We want to cover as much distance as possible before morning, so we wake Lipa up and start running.
“I feel pretty good!”
Lipa, who has just woken up, immediately gets on his flying broom and floats into the air.
“Maybe I’ve gained a little level from fighting the monsters.”
Has his overall magic power increased? He has a string tied to the end of his broom, and Chel is pulling on it.
“Okay, Makyo, let’s go!”
“Lipa, hold on tight!”
Chel and I put all our magic power into our legs and ran north at full speed. The sun was in the east, so we wouldn’t get lost.
Even if monsters attacked us, we could usually ignore them. We jumped over the desert salamanders that were blocking our way, kicked away the desert sharks that were waiting with their mouths open for their prey, and moved on to deal a blow with our fists to the desert eagles that were attacking Lipa from the sky.
When the sun had fully risen, and the temperature had risen, I could see a huge chain on the sand.
We were moving faster. It was good that I had found a way of running that put magic power into the moment I kicked the sand.
We made a water balloon tent in the shade of a sand dune and took a break. Lipa drank water like crazy because he was so thirsty.
“Puhah~! I thought I was going to die!”
It seems that Lipa is still unable to stand up for fear of being thrown off rather than being attacked by monsters. As he moved, the wind blew him around because he was floating on a flying broom.
“But I’m glad that you’re not experiencing any more magic power depletion.”
“Yes. It’s strange even for me, but I was fine today.”
“Will you be able to fly by yourself after lunch?”
“Even if I could fly, I don’t think I could keep up with you two.”
“I see. Then I guess I’ll have to tie you to the shell of the haze turtle this afternoon.”
“Huh?”
“Don’t worry. Even if your bones break a little, Chel will heal you.”
“Are you kidding? Chel-san, Makyo-san is saying something reckless again, but you wouldn’t do that, would you?”
“If you don’t do reckless things in the demonic land, you will die. Forget the common sense that if you do reckless things, you will die.”
“No way…”
Lipa suddenly became serious. It’s hard to accept reality in the demonic land, and it takes time. Maybe I should have shown him the monster attack last night.
“You should see reality first.”
“I’ll bake some bread.”
Ignoring Lipa, Chel wiped the sweat from her face and began to make the usual cylindrical bread.
“I think I’ll scout around a bit.”
We have water and food, and we should reach the forest by tonight. If we know the way back, we can calculate our own endurance and move.
“Is it about something under the chain?”
Chel asked, kneading the flour.
“Yes, there was a stake in the Cliff Garuda, so there might be something under the sand.”
“I was wondering about that building. What is it?”
Lipa asked as if he had come to his senses.
“It’s not a building; it’s a chain. It’s connected to the floating island. It’s a place of exile now, and a person is being punished there.”
“Hee~. I thought I was used to being unlucky, but it seems there are times when I’m so surprised that I can’t move.”
Lipa put his hands on the ground and froze. He tried to accept reality, but he seemed to have failed.
“If you stay like this, you’ll be eaten by the monsters, so you should wave a stick or something.”
Hearing Chel’s advice, Lipa began to wave his arms with great force.
Was this a harsh reality for a newcomer to the demonic land?
I covered myself with cloth and moved away from the resting place, closer to the chains. I placed my hands on the ground and released magic power into the underground. The shape of things underground echoed back.
“It’s huge…”
There are huge ruins buried underground. Many rectangular and square buildings surround them, and it looks like a city buried in the sand. The chains seem to be connected to the square ruins.
There are also things moving inside the ruins.
“There are also humanoid monsters…”
When I release my magic power several times, I can see the details of their shape. The humanoid monsters are looking up, which means they are looking at me, the one releasing the magic power…!
“They’ve noticed me!”
Dust rises around me. The sand on the ground rises, and a metal cube emitting light pops out from inside. The sand sticks to the cube, and it gradually takes on the shape of a person.
“Golems protecting the ruins?”
If I were to leave the cubes popping out of the sand one by one, I would be surrounded by golems. I’m not that naive to just watch them being made, so I quickly grabbed the cubes as they popped up and wrapped them in the cloth I was using as a sunshade.
As a result, two golems stood on either side of me, but I had six cubes in my hands.
I was hesitating whether to fight or negotiate when the golem in front of me attacked me.
“Is there any room to negotiate?”
The golem behind me also attacked me, so I tried to defend myself with my arm covered in magic power, but it wasn’t that strong. The rock crocodile’s tail is faster and heavier. It probably wouldn’t stand a chance in the demonic land forest. Maybe it was just left over from its time underground in the desert.
After taking some damage, I tried to get the cube out of the golem in front of me. I knew it was in its chest because I had seen it being formed, and I knew it was hard because it was made of hardened sand.
When I took the cube out, the golem simply turned back into sand.
Clank.
I heard a metallic sound and turned around to see the golem behind me gathering magic power in its mouth and glowing. I think the magic power that was glowing was dangerous. Without thinking, I kicked the golem’s chin with my foot.
Zap!
The glowing magic power was released into the sky.
The golem lost its power and, unable to maintain its shape, it melted and turned into sand. All that remained on the ground was the cube, which had lost its light.
“I guess I’ll dig it up after all.”
I wrapped the empty cube in a cloth and returned to its resting place.
“Did something happen? Did a ray of light go up into the sky?”
Chel asked, eating bread.
“There were ruins under the chain, and I was spotted by the golem guarding them. It attacked me, so I defeated it.”
“I see… What are you doing! It’ll be hard to excavate later!”
“But I caught it. Look. Do you know what it is? Maybe we won’t have to fight it.”
I showed Chel the empty cube. It was covered in magic circles, and I thought maybe she, being a demon, would understand, but she replied, “Of course not!”
“Let’s show it to Hel. She knows a lot about magic circles.”
“By the way, there are seven more.”
I also showed her the seven cubes in the cloth.
“These still seem to be moving, so maybe we should seal them?”
“Why did you bring them here!”
Chel shoved some bread into her mouth, pulled the fur out of the haze turtle’s shell, and wrapped the cube in it.
As he listened to our conversation, Lipa’s swinging speed increased. He was sweating, and his arms were tired, but he didn’t stop. In the end, he continued until he collapsed from exhaustion.
As the sun began to set, we tied Lipa, who had collapsed, to the haze turtle shell and headed north across the desert. The wind was blowing and the sand was blowing, so we couldn’t see the sun’s position, so Chel led the way, casting a spell to keep us from getting lost.
A giant earthworm chased us through the sand, but we escaped by moving into the shade of a dune. We didn’t have time to fight it.
By the time we could see the forest, the wind had died down.
As usual, the battle between the monsters and the plants was going on in the demonic land forest, and strange screams could be heard everywhere.
Kyoeee!
If you stay there for a while, you won’t notice it, but if you step back and look, you can hear it.
The screams of the imps and the sound of the treants moving. The monsters devour the entrails of other monsters, and the plants strangle the monsters. These are sounds you couldn’t hear in the Cliff Garuda.
“Ah, this is home.”
“If we stop on the way, we’ll get lost, so let’s go straight home!”
Chel warned me.
“I know. I have to tell Hel and Sylvia about our adventure.”
“Jennifer’s food will run out, so we have to think about that too.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
As dusk approached, we ran through the dark forest toward our cave home. After passing Golden Bat’s Cave, the ruins of the temple, and crossing Rock Crocodile’s river, we could see our cave.
Even if it takes a long time, it’s much easier to move around in a place you know. Even if the position of the plants has changed or there are dead monsters lying around, a place you’re used to is a place that makes you feel at home.
When we returned to the cave, Hel and Sylvia came up the slope from the swamp.
“We’re back!”
“W-w-welcome back!”
Chel hugged Sylvia. For some reason, Sylvia was soaked and almost naked. Had she lost her sense of modesty because she’d only lived with Hel? I didn’t really care.
“It feels like I haven’t seen you for a long time. Is that the guy from the bird tribe who’s tied up?”
Hel asked as she looked at the haze turtle’s shell.
“Yes, his name is Lipa. It was quite interesting. We even managed to set up a trade route. We learned a lot, so let’s talk about it over dinner.”
“I-I-I have something I want to talk about too. W-w-when I was diving in the swamp, I found some relics.”
Sylvia came up to me, her eyes shining brighter than usual.
“Sylvia drank the blood of the fish monster, and the work progressed. As I thought, the power of the vampire clan is amazing. But there are so many relics; we have to sort them out.”
Hel looked at me with a troubled expression. Sylvia was also looking at me with upturned eyes.
“Then we need to get Jennifer!”
Chel sensed what was going on with Hel and the others and came over.
“Is that okay? Let Jennifer go.”
“Y-y-yeah. She’s been punished enough.”
After checking with Sylvia, we decided to bring Jennifer back from Sky Island.
“It’s late today, so we’ll bring her back tomorrow.”
“Great!”
We exchanged information during dinner. Lipa didn’t wake up, so I put him to bed in my room.
“What kind of guy is he?”
Hel asked. It seems she is more interested in the newcomer to the demonic land than in the stories I brought back.
“Well, he’s not so dangerous. He has an unfortunate upbringing, but the monsters like him.”
“He seems to have a talent for being targeted by monsters.”
“Besides, when we met him, he had been banished from the Cliff Garuda.”
“Then maybe he’s suited for the demonic land.”
“W-w-what can he do?”
Sylvia asked, stirring the thick vegetable soup.
“He can use a flying broom.”
“S-s-so he can fly?”
“Yes, it seems to be common in Cliff Garuda. I bought one, so you should try riding it as well.”
After that, when I started talking about Cliff Garuda, Cher couldn’t stop.
“As I thought, Makyo is weird.”
I immediately started talking about how I could make magic stones, and in the end, I fell asleep before I could hear Hel and Sylvia’s story. I must have been tired from the trip, so I unpacked my things and went straight to sleep.
