Chapter 92 – Day 37 of Exploration
When I woke up in the morning, I washed my face in the swamp. When I came back to the cave, Hel and Sylvia had prepared a glass of water for me.
“What’s this? It’s rare.”
I tried to drink the water in the glass, and it was as cold as ice.
“It’s cold!”
They laughed at my reaction.
“Sorry, I recreated the magic circle that was drawn on the pot we dug up. This glass of water is always cold.”
When I looked closer, I could see that the wooden cup had a thin magic circle drawn on it.
“So the ancients drank cold water?”
“A-a-and they did it every day.”
“They didn’t consciously put magic power into the magic circle on the cup, did they?”
“Is the material a good conductor of magic power? Or can you cool it down with a little magic power with the magic circle?”
I asked Hel, but she urged me to try it myself. When I put magic power into the cup, the whole cup froze white.
“It’s more precise and accurate than the magic circles used by modern elves. Even the skilled Sylvia failed three times.”
Sylvia showed me the cracked cup.
“I-i-it’s impossible to mass produce.”
“Perhaps there was an excellent magic tool shop.”
“Did you find anything else?”
When I asked, Hel and Sylvia looked at each other. Perhaps they had examined the artifacts together during the night.
“No, I was just saying that it’s strange that there’s a gate but no protective wall.”
“T-t-there were huge bones at the bottom of the swamp, so I thought they were protecting the city from monsters…”
“If there’s no protective wall, then giant monsters can come and go as they please. Was there a wall that didn’t last for posterity, or were giant monsters kept there? Which do you think it was?”
“The ones that were kept. Huge monsters would put a lot of strain on their joints, so keeping them by the water would be appropriate. It might also be effective in lowering their internal body temperature.”
“Why were the monsters made huge?”
I asked, melting a frozen cup of water over the fire.
“A-a-a means of transportation, or a monster for the Colosseum…”
“If you think about it like that, it makes sense why we can’t find any weapons.”
“That makes sense. Didn’t Hel ask the spirits?”
I ask anyway.
“I don’t hear it. There are signs that they lived here, so it would be natural to think that their memories would be preserved, but there are none. They must have had a very strong view of life and death.”
It seems that they tried after all.
“Well, hypotheses are important, but let’s try not to make too many assumptions. We might miss something important.”
“That’s true.”
After the meeting with Hel and Sylvia was over, Chel stood up.
“Can we leave tomorrow?”
Chel asked, holding a letter in her hand.
“To the Cliff Garuda? If we watch out for the sandstorms, we should be able to get by on two days’ food.”
“Then let’s go tomorrow.”
“Okay. We’ll move to a place near the desert at night. We can’t move through the desert during the day anyway. Hel, Sylvia, wake me and Chel up at midnight.”
“Okay.”
“O-o-okay.”
Even though Chel had suggested it herself, she regretted it.
While we were making crocodile soup for breakfast, Jennifer and Lipa also woke up, and the five of us had breakfast together. Lipa had muscle pains, and he had covered himself with medicine so he was completely white. The girls laughed, but Lipa didn’t seem to mind.
“I can’t move without the medicine, so there’s nothing to be done.”
“Be strong.”
“Yes, but I can’t imagine catching up with Jennifer-san.”
“You don’t have to catch up, and you don’t have to aim for it. Just do what you can, in your own way.”
“Yes.”
In the morning, Jennifer and Lipa go to the forest to gather medicinal herbs. According to Jennifer, Lipa “doesn’t have a good memory, and he’s not very useful right now.” However, he can do the things he’s learned for a long time. He’s not very flexible, but his skills are improving. I think it’s okay to give him some time to get used to it.
Chel and I are preparing for tomorrow and building a boat. When I say “preparing for tomorrow,” I’ve just put some smoked meat and dried fruit in my bag and filled my water bag with water.
The boat is starting to take shape, but I’m not sure if it will be able to travel between continents.
“If we put up a mast and attach an outrigger, will it be able to cross rough seas?”
“You did it once, right?”
“It was a close call. If Makyo hadn’t found me, I would have died.”
“You ended up drifting, didn’t you? You can’t sail without a compass or the ability to raise and lower the sails. Let’s go to Cliff Garuda and buy a compass.”
“Makyo, teach me the magic of creating water currents.”
“Can’t you do it, Chel?”
I stopped carving the ship and turned around, and Chel produced water from her palm.
“Mine is just normal water magic, but Makyo’s magic seems easier.”
It seems that the power of the water is not enough.
“Well, it’s okay, but it’s just disturbing the flow of water.”
“That’s amplifying the power, right? I don’t understand. Does that mean it’s a strengthening spell?”
“I don’t know because I’ve never studied the system. But since Chel taught me magic, I find it strange if she can’t do it either.”
“Keh!”
Chel carved the boat while saying, “It wouldn’t be a problem if I could do it.”
For lunch, we had bread with jam made from cam fruit and snake soup. Lipa had caught both the cam fruit and the snakes. They were both refreshing and delicious.
“Do the bird people like birds?”
Hel asked after waking up. It’s true that some birds, like eagles, eat snakes.
“Huh? Well, I don’t know…”
Lipa turned her head and thought about it.
“D-d-do you collect shiny things?”
“Well, if you put it like that, I guess I like polished metal.”
Lipa was forced to learn how to sharpen blades from Sylvia.
After a short rest, the five of us made our way to the other side of the swamp. Somehow, a path had formed, and the monsters had stopped attacking us.
However, the plants were different.
“Ah, this is the demonic land.”
“This is indeed the demonic land.”
“Yes, this is the demonic land.”
Where we burned the monsters’ corpses yesterday, lush plants and trees were growing.
“It’s only been one day!
Razor grass, bend grass, and palm-like trees have grown, and you can’t see the charcoal-covered ground.
“That’s why you can’t farm in the demonic land. PJ seems to have done it, so I think there’s a way. If anyone comes up with a good method, let me know. By the way, ordinary vegetable seeds lose out to the plants in the demonic land.”
After a brief explanation, we dug up the ground around the ruins.
I released magic power into the ground and searched for relics that looked like weapons. I found things like pieces of sticks and spoons, but I couldn’t find any relics that clearly looked like blades or weapons.
“Is this a metal fitting for a belt?”
What Sylvia found was a metal fitting that looked like it might have been attached to a belt the size of a large plate.
“I don’t know if it was used by an incredibly fat person or a monster.”
“We’ll take the rust off later and check it out. Then we’ll dig up the next hill!”
“””Ooh!”””
The temperature was rising, and everyone was drenched in sweat. We had to put up a brave front, or we wouldn’t be able to continue.
While we were cutting down trees and clearing the bushes on the hill, the imps started making a racket.
Gyeoeee!
Alarms went off everywhere, and monsters like Treant and the giant flower monster began to approach. When they had gathered to a certain extent, I gathered magic power in my fists and punched them to destroy them.
“Listen, only Makyo-san can do that, so don’t get your hopes up.”
Jennifer taught Lipa, who was stunned.
“Wasn’t there a new monster?”
“Was it the flower thing? It wasn’t poisonous. Burn it away.”
Chel gathered the monster corpses and the branches and leaves near the swamp and burned them in a large bonfire.
“Since we’re here, can we plant some cam fruit seeds?”
Sylvia ate the cam fruit with Hel. It seemed that snack time had come before I knew it. She wanted to plant some edible plants since the burned area would be overrun with plants anyway.
“Sure, please. Turn the whole area into an orchard.”
I replied, chewing on the cam fruit she had given me.
After eating the sweet cam fruit, I continued digging. This was the second time I had to break down a hill, so the work progressed without me having to give any instructions.
On the way, a horse-sized mole-like monster appeared, but I smashed it to pieces with my club. The mole had dug a tunnel underground, and the ruins had been slightly destroyed as well, but I didn’t pay any attention to that and continued digging.
“This is taking a long time.”
“Makyo, it’s about time.”
Chel tugged at my sleeve and pointed to the sky. There was still time before sunset, but the sky was already turning red.
“Oh, I see. Sorry, but we’re going to Cliff Garuda tomorrow, so we’ll leave first. You can wrap things up as you see fit, so don’t overdo it.”
“Okay!”
“Yes!”
Only Lipa replied happily.
Chel and I went back to the cave first, washed up, and went to sleep.
There seemed to be some noise while we were sleeping, but we weren’t woken up, so we just slept in our own rooms.
