Chapter 100 – Day 45 of Exploration
The next day, we all decided to head for the east coast.
I would need my leg strength to get through the central forest area.
In addition, we would need to summon the familiars of the demon race from the distant coast. If only one of them could be summoned – Lipa, who can fly, Hel, who uses spells, or Jennifer, who confuses with mental magic – that would be fine.
Sylvia said she would build a hut to wait for Chel.
In the end, we all had to leave.
That was the official reason, but the real reason was that we wanted to see Chel off.
I told the two elves in the forest at the entrance that I was going out for a while and that if there were any intruders, they should let them in.
“Where are you going?”
“To the east coast. I hear the demons are coming.”
When I explained, they were speechless.
“There may be messengers from the Elf Kingdom or the Cliff Garuda, but you don’t have to resist.”
“Understood. If there are any corpses, we’ll take care of them.”
These two seem to be assuming that the messengers from other countries will die. For now, I have dug a lot of traps around the entrance.
Unlike me, who was preparing sandwiches in a picnic mood, the women had practiced going through the central forest area several times. Lipa was scared, but I guess it doesn’t matter because he can escape on a flying broom.
Anyway, we gave Chel a few days’ worth of food, prepared some medicinal herbs, and headed east. We bypassed the swamp where the fog hadn’t lifted, went through the forest where the imps were screaming, and Treant was chasing us, and entered the depths of the demonic land.
It’s true that we had been able to avoid them until now, but the closer we got to the Migration Forest, the bigger and stronger the monsters became.
However, as long as we didn’t try to harm them, they rarely attacked us. Perhaps because they knew that a fight would hurt both sides, the large ape-like monsters only bared their fangs and threatened us.
The giant crocodiles that lurked in the river also stayed hidden and didn’t move, as if to say that small prey isn’t worth eating. They just looked at us.
The only one who attacked us was a monster disguised as a large rock. The monster looked like a spider with many legs. I was ahead of the others, so I wasn’t attacked, but for some reason, the women were attacked. They were shooting magic spells, but Jennifer was defending against them well.
Since its legs were slow and its reach was long, I got close and hit it in the side, and it flew away.
“If you close the distance and hit it, it’s nothing.”
“Makyo, don’t do anything to make everyone lose confidence.”
When I turned around, the women stared at me.
“Is that so? I’m sorry, but why wasn’t I attacked?”
“Is it because of male chauvinism?”
“I don’t think the difference between men and women is that relevant to monsters…”
While Jennifer and Hel were talking, Sylvia aimed her bone axe at a nearby boulder.
The giant rock slowly transformed into a spider and shot a spell at Sylvia. Jennifer became a shield to block the magic, and the women raised their staffs to fight back. For some reason, the attack didn’t hit me or Lipa.
“I’m coming too!”
When Lipa drew his wooden sword, the spider monster noticed and attacked with its hard stone legs. However, it didn’t attack me, who was unarmed.
It seems that it targets those who have weapons in their hands. Even when I slowly approached the spider’s belly while everyone else was fighting, it completely ignored me. In fact, it even seemed to be careful to move its legs so as not to step on me.
“Everyone, drop your weapons! That monster seems to recognize weapons.”
At my call, everyone dropped their weapons.
The giant spider immediately became docile and returned to the giant rock.
“A monster that can recognize disarmed humans must have been created by humans…”
Hel stared at the giant rock with wide eyes.
“It’s probably been here for a thousand years, since it’s disguised as a rock.”
“So this giant rock spider is a guardian protecting the city?”
“I-if that’s the case, then Midgard was a place where weapons were forbidden?”
Our imagination just wouldn’t stop, but for now, I stuffed the discarded weapons into my bag and headed for the east coast.
Once we left the Migration Forest, there were no more strong monsters or plants. Even if they attacked, they were all kind of stupid.
The Maeshitsukawazu that attacked us crashed into the cliff, and the Golden Bat that fell from the sky hit the ground and couldn’t fly anymore. They were perfect training partners for Lipa, but we were also in a hurry.
We ran without stopping for lunch. Everyone except Hel had learned to run with magical power in their legs, like Chel and I do. Hel still couldn’t seem to get her magic back.
“I’m sorry.”
Hel, who was tied to the back of the shoiko, said this, but it was a curse, so there was nothing to be done.
“Don’t you think you should just forget about it? Isn’t the demonic land style about making up for what you lack?”
Jennifer said with a smile.
“No, it’s not. The demonic land style is about using whatever you can to survive. So Hel, you don’t have to worry. Even if you use Makyo now, you’ll always end up on the receiving end.”
Chel has been here longer than the others, so she probably understands the demonic land the best.
We reached the east coast before sunset.
The sea was calm, and on the distant beach, a large coconut crab monster was walking around.
“Let’s have dinner.”
We hunted by breaking the coconut crab’s shell. Its claws alone were bigger than a person’s upper body, so we wouldn’t have to worry about food for a while.
Sylvia quickly gathered palm leaves from the nearby forest and combined them with driftwood to make a simple rain shelter. Jennifer and Lipa went to gather wild plants while Chel and Hel prepared the magic.
Since everyone had their own job to do, there was no need to give instructions.
While I made a soup with the coconut crabs, Chel and Hel captured the demon’s familiar. The familiar was a large eagle-like monster with a magic stone embedded between its eyes.
“I’m going home, so come and get me. Tell the demon lord not to attack me.”
Chel spoke to the familiar without her accent, holding its head in her hands and looking like a bandit. She said it was only natural since the other side had started the fight.
Hel asked me to put as much magic power as I could into the magic stone lantern, so I put in as much as I could without breaking it. It looks like she’s going to make a simple lighthouse by hanging it on the end of a long piece of driftwood.
“Looks like I wasn’t really needed.”
Jennifer said as she stirred the seaweed soup.
“Well, since we’re here, let’s get some salt. We can’t have too much salt, can we?”
“That’s right.”
Jennifer didn’t seem to mind, as her real purpose was to see Chel off.
“H-how long will you be gone?”
Sylvia asked Chel.
“I don’t think I’ll be back for a week.”
“S-should we wait here then?”
“Yeah, that’s a good idea.”
It seems unlikely that the Elven Kingdom will attack, and East Kenya is also stable at the moment.
“When Chel returns, we’ll have to start thinking about countermeasures for the giant monster. It’s been about three months now.”
“Shall we evacuate to the north again?”
“Yes, let’s go to an old well or somewhere else that will be less affected by the storm.”
“Do you need clothes?”
Hel asked.
“Yes, it’s warm there, but if the giant monster appears, that might not matter much. You have some fur, right?”
“W-well, I’ll make some.”
“Even you, Makyo-san, can’t fight that giant monster, can you?”
“Yes, the scale is on another level. Can you imagine an entire mountain range moving? It’s big enough to steal a dungeon.”
“Huh? W-what do you mean?”
Lipa couldn’t imagine it.
I guess the only way to convince him is to show him.
We’ll think about our schedule for the week we’ll be on the east coast. Since Chel isn’t here, we’ll take turns baking bread. The monsters around here aren’t that strong, and they don’t seem to be very wary of humans, so they don’t really pay attention to us. However, they are big.
“Lipa will be training, right?”
“That’s right!”
“I’m going to train my body as well. I’m starting to feel like I won’t be able to do anything in the demonic land if I can’t move my body, regardless of whether I can use magic or not.”
Hel will also join Lipa in his training.
“I want to try diving in the sea. I’m curious about the crustaceans and shellfish.”
“I’ll probably go with you. We’ll need food anyway. What about you, Jennifer?”
“I think I’ll just go to bed…”
It seems that Jennifer wants to rest both body and soul.
“No, please say something! I’m going to gather wild plants. The vegetation seems to be different from the west of the demonic land.”
“You can rest if you want. The monsters around here aren’t that strong, so there’s no need to rush.”
“Well, you should have some expectations of me as well.”
“Why don’t you try to invent a new technique?”
“If it were that easy, I wouldn’t be struggling.”
“What about that trapping thing you were talking about earlier?”
Chel asked Jennifer.
“That was…”
“If you have an idea, why don’t you try it? No one will get mad if you can’t do it.”
Jennifer thought about using magic for protection as a tanker, but when she saw the elves’ houses, she thought it might be possible to trap monsters by surrounding them with walls on all sides.
“That sounds good, doesn’t it?”
“But there aren’t many ways to capture monsters in the demonic land, are there? Is it really necessary?”
“Even if you don’t use it in the demonic land, you might use it once you leave, right? There’s no point in staying here forever, so you might as well try it out.”
“I see. All right, I’ll try it.”
Although she doesn’t seem very enthusiastic about it, it seems that Jennifer is going to develop a new technique.
In the middle of the night, the sound of paddles being rowed could be heard, mixing with the sound of the waves. A boat could be seen coming toward the beach in the pitch-black sea. A few lights from the magic stone lanterns could be seen in the distance. It seemed that several large ships were coming as well. It was a big deal for Chel alone.
“Looks like they’re coming to get you.”
“Yes.”
Chel took her things and waited for the ship. Everyone else got up as well.
On the boat was a man in a black robe with a red face. He looked like a rough-looking soldier, but he looked at us for a moment and then lowered his eyes.
“Master Michelle. I’ve come to pick you up.”
The man who had landed on the beach said this to Chel. It seems her real name isn’t Chel. Of course not.
“Hmm. Don’t use your powers too much. He’s not someone you can handle.”
Chel warned the man.
“Ha!”
“Well, I’ll go then.”
“Yeah.”
As Chel was about to get into the boat, a large splash appeared in the distance.
It was dark, so it was hard to see, but it looked like a monster had appeared.
“Hey, Chel-san, isn’t that boat out there being attacked by a monster?”
If you look closely, you can see the light of the magic stone lantern flickering.
“That’s because they approached the demonic land without any preparation. They can’t even walk slowly! Makyo, give me a hand!”
“Roger.”
Chel started running on the surface of the sea, so I followed.
“Sekito! Come after us!”
“Understood!”
The man with the red face seems to be called Sekito. He listened carefully to what Chel said.
The large ship anchored off the coast was about to be attacked by an even larger squid monster and pulled in whole.
The crew, who seemed to be demons, screamed and cast spells, but the spells had no effect.
While running, Chel cut off the squid’s legs with a spear of flame and somehow managed to get the ship back on course.
I plunged my left hand into the water and used magic to disrupt the flow of the water, causing the giant squid to be thrown to the surface. Then I used ice magic on my right fist and smashed it into the squid’s eyes as it fell. It felt like hard slime, but the squid monster slipped through the fleet of ships and fell onto the surface of the water. A huge splash went up.
Chel and I jumped onto the deck of the ship we had saved and looked at the squid monster.
“Was it a single blow?”
The squid monster floated there, not moving at all.
“Looks like it. Are you going to eat it?”
“No, I heard that big squid doesn’t taste good, so no thanks.”
Chel put the bag back on her shoulder.
“Are you staying on board?”
“Yes, we’ll leave when the boat comes back. Are you coming, Makyo?”
“No, I’m not going because I wasn’t called.”
“Give my regards to everyone.”
“Okay, then.”
The sailors on the ship were still clinging to the railings and masts, not even making a sound.
I jumped into the water and approached the boat coming toward the ship.
“Chel is an idiot and unreliable, so don’t count on her.”
“Huh? Oh yeah.”
Sekito replied shortly and looked at me.
I walked back to the beach and looked out to sea.
The light of the magic stone lantern flickered, but soon it was lost in the waves.
“Looks like they made it.”
“As long as Chel is there, there’s nothing to worry about.”
“I hope so.”
Lipa yawned and waved.
