Chapter 99 – Day 44 of Exploration

Since the morning, Chel had listened to me in silence.

She must have understood my situation all too well. If she stayed in the demonic land, it would cause trouble for both the Estinia Kingdom and the demonic land. If things went badly, someone might even end up being sacrificed.

“Chel, I have some suggestions.”

“It’s better if it’s not just one.”

“For me, there’s a part of me that doesn’t want to send you back to the Meiju Kingdom, and another part that wants you to go back to the demonic land after you’ve beaten up the royal family to some extent. To be honest, as someone who has lived with you, I feel good that you, who ran away, are being welcomed as a state guest.”

When I said this, Chel laughed for the first time today.

“That is right. Show them the power you’ve cultivated in the demonic land!”

“There aren’t many people, even among the demons, who could stop you now.”

“K-Kick them all out!”

It seems that the women want to pick a fight with the Meiju Kingdom.

“If you use the Cliff Garuda airship to go there and back, there won’t be any problems. The captains of the airship are all people who will do whatever you want if you give them money.”

Lipa agrees. He must have seen them as nothing more than servants.

“Another suggestion is that we get this demonic land recognized as a country.”

“What do you mean?”

“The Meiju Kingdom is recognized as a country, so the Cliff Garuda and the Elf Kingdom will cooperate. We will have this demonic land recognized as a country as well. Even though there are only six of us.”

“Is that even possible?”

“Even though our military and economic strength are completely different, if we can destroy the castle and stop their functions as a country, then we can negotiate. If they don’t accept, we can just destroy them.”

“In other words, if we can reduce the power of the surrounding countries and force them to recognize us as a nation, the Meiju Kingdom won’t be able to do anything. However, I don’t think the terrorist attack will succeed, considering that it’s Makyo.”

Hel added.

“You have a deep love for Chel-san, Makyo-san.”

Jennifer’s eyes sparkled.

“Is that so?”

“Because you’ll take on not only the Kingdom of Meiju, but also the surrounding countries to protect Chel-san, right?”

“Well, I’m pretty soft on my tenants. Or should I say my subjects now?”

“If that’s the case, will you destroy the Elf Kingdom for me?”

“If Hel says the Elf Kingdom is not worth using, then let’s see how far we can destroy it.”

“No, let’s not. Sometimes Makyo’s jokes aren’t really jokes.”

When Hel waved her hand to refuse, Sylvia clapped her hands and shouted, “Usefulness!”

“I-if Chel thinks it’s useful, she can go to the Kingdom of Meiju, but if not, it’s better not to go. It’s much easier to think in terms of profit and loss than feelings.”

Sylvia is practical.

Chel was silent for a while but then suddenly started baking bread.

“Don’t you think I won’t return to the demonic land if I go back to the Meiju Kingdom?”

Chel asked without her accent.

“Do you want to live in the Meiju Kingdom forever? Really?”

“Do demons eat such delicious food?”

“Of course not. It’s so boring that you might even die.”

“I… if the treatment is good, I’ll go too.”

Neither I nor the girls could imagine Chel living in the Meiju Kingdom and growing old.

“But if you get married, that’s better, right? Even if you have children, it’s safer than the demonic land.”

“Why don’t you just marry Chel-san, Makyo-san?”

“Just for form’s sake? So I’ll go to the Meiju Kingdom as her husband? What am I going to do? I can’t oppress anyone. I’m sure I can apologize to the servants just for being offered tea!”

“P-people who say it’s just for form’s sake are scum!”

“Even if you’re just a couple for form’s sake, it’s still annoying to be cheated on. I don’t recommend it.”

The four of us were having a silly conversation, but Chel tried to look serious and baked the bread until it was golden brown.

“These guys are hopeless. What do you think, Lipa?”

“Me? Well, I think if Chel-san goes back to the Meiju Kingdom, she’ll become weak. Even I, who have only been in the demonic land for a short time, think that it will take a while for me to return to my old daily life if I go back to the Cliff Garuda. For now, I don’t think I can bear it, so I think I’ll go back to the demonic land.”

“You say surprisingly battle-junkie-like things, Lipa.”

Chel started to eat the bread with the meat in it while thinking again.

“What are you talking about? I just make enough for myself to eat!”

“It’s delicious. Do you want some?”

“Of course I do!”

We had a late breakfast, with Chel making enough bread for six.

Today’s schedule was to continue excavating the ruins and training. If we can’t deal with the monsters in the area called the Central Forest Zone, we won’t be able to do any research on Midgard.

Sylvia and Hel have gone into the cave to develop a weapon that won’t break easily. Apparently, there are some monsters that are really tough.

Jennifer goes with Lipa to collect minerals.

“There are some monsters that can’t be defeated with just monster bones.”

She sounded as if she knew what she was talking about.

“Let’s spar for the first time in a while, okay?”

Chel and I were going to spar. She had been learning about the flow of magic power and magic before, but this time, she wanted to do it for real. She had taken off the bracelet that suppressed her magical power.

“Well then, let’s go.”

“Yes. When did I become the one to take the challenge…”

Just as I said that an oversized fireball attacked me.

I used water magic on my fist and flicked it away with my backhand. The fireball flew far away and burned the forest.

“You almost burned down the whole cave.”

“I told you I was serious.”

Chel laughed as she said this. Hel and Sylvia were both in the cave, so it was only natural for me to protect them. In the end, I did what Chel had predicted.

“Shall we try again?”

“Go ahead.”

The screams of the imps from the surrounding forest grew louder. The monsters were gathering.

We had to change our position.

The moment Chel swung her arm to create a fireball, I closed the distance, grabbed her arm, and threw her toward the swamp.

I wanted to give Chel a fist bump as she came down the slope and out of the swamp, but she was standing on the surface of the swamp.

“You’re pretty handy, aren’t you?”

“It’s all about balance. Anyone can do it if they practice…”

Chel brought up about 40 water balls from the swamp and sent them towards me.

It looks like she’s planning to intercept me from the shore. There’s no problem with the water balls, as I can smash them with my fist imbued with ice magic, but if I continue like this, I won’t be able to close the distance with Chel.

“What’s wrong? If you’re just getting attacked, it’s not a real sparring match.”

I need to be able to run on the water if I’m going to be able to compete with Chel.

“You’re not saying that someone like Makyo can’t do something he hasn’t learned, are you?”

It was a bad provocation, but it was fun to play along.

“I wouldn’t say that. This is the demonic land. You have to use all your wits to survive. I’m the lord of this demonic land.”

I applied the ice magic I had in my hands to my legs as well and ran on the surface of the water.

Using the frozen surface of the water as a foothold, I closed the distance to Chel in one fell swoop. As I ran, I realized something. The ice magic I had applied to my feet could only freeze the surface layer of the water, and my feet would sink.

I had to take a step before my feet sank, and since I couldn’t take a proper step, I couldn’t deliver an effective blow to Chel.

“Did you think you could defeat me with a wave of your hand? You have too much respect for demon magic.”

Chel threw an ice spear at me, but it only hit my arms. If I hadn’t defended with my elbow, there would have been a hole in my side by now.

Even though I’m thinking while I’m attacking, I’m being forced to dance on Chel’s palm, and she won’t let me fight the way I want to.

However, as we fight on the water, the waves begin to appear.

“Makyo’s weakness was a place without soil.”

Chel says and laughs.

“Then I’ll just use the place to my advantage.”

The moment Chel moved away from me with a right hook that sliced through the air, I placed both hands on the surface of the water. Interrupting the power of the waves, I turned them into high waves and attacked in the direction Chel had fled.

In the wall of water that formed in an instant, there was also a monster of a large fish with its mouth open. Just before being devoured, Chel froze the high waves like a wall.

“Now I have a good foothold…”

Using the frozen wave as a foothold, I pulled the big fish out and slammed it into Chel. The water splashed up as if the surface had burst, but there was no sign of Chel.

My luck ran out as I searched the distant surface for her, wondering where she had gone.

“Closing the distance and hitting someone is not an exclusive Makyo technique.”

A shock went through the back of my head. At the moment of impact, it didn’t seem that strong, but it was heavy as if it had some kind of magic attached to it. It felt like my body weight had increased a hundredfold, and I sank to the bottom of the swamp, crushed by the pressure.

But the bottom of the swamp. Unlike the surface of the water, where there was no foothold, there was a definite feeling when you stepped on it. At the bottom of the swamp, where the mud and bones of the monsters were buried, I bent my knees, gathered my magic power, and jumped up to the surface at once.

Splash!

The water splashed around as if the bottom of the swamp had exploded, and the mud and monster bones rose to the surface. The sleeping Haze Turtle tucked its head into its shell and rolled into the forest.

Chel, who had lost her footing on the water, stood up with the monster bones and looked for me.

“Carelessness is your greatest enemy.”

Using the bones as a foothold, I used my fist imbued with wind magic to strike Chel right in the solar plexus.

Bam!

Chel’s body flew high into the air, and before I knew it, she had landed on the shore, where Hel and Sylvia were watching the battle.

Dodging the falling bones and monsters, I swam to the shore where the three of them were waiting.

“Makyo and Chel’s sparring match will win them gold!”

“C-c-can humans really do that?”

Hel and Sylvia applauded. Jennifer and Lipa seemed to be watching from another place, saying things like,

“There’s nothing more to say.”

“What do you have to fight to become like this?”

And giving up their work.

“It’s just a sparring match. What happened to your work?”

I was wringing out my innermost thoughts and washing my mud-covered armor when Chel, who was also soaked to the skin, called out to me, “Makyo.

“What is it?”

“It’s a pain, but I’m going back to the Kingdom of Meiju and sort things out.”

“Oh, I see.”

Chel stood up straight and smiled.

“H-h-how can you stand there so calmly after being blown away like that?”

Sylvia said as she helped the soaking wet Chel change her clothes.
