Chapter 109 – Day 1 of the Strategy Life

The day before, Chel came back with a huge amount of souvenirs.

The ship was loaded with a large amount of clothes and robes, and it was also full of food like flour and pickles, so it was hard just to get them out.

“It will be hard to get them to the cave.”

“That’s okay. We’ll leave them at the warehouse.”

“Warehouse?

The warehouse near the harbor doesn’t have a roof, but if we leave the goods on the first floor, they’ll be protected from the rain. The demon race on the ship was also very cooperative and even brought the goods up to the deck for us.

Chel seemed to notice our change a little, but she hadn’t asked anything yet.

“I trained them in the Colosseum.”

“Did you cause a ruckus?”

“Just a little. I’ve already talked to the current Demon King, and I’ve also heard about the demonic land from the Demon King of 1000 years ago.”

“Oh, that’s great. Tell me about it when things settle down.”

When I stuck out my tongue to thank the demon race that carried the cargo, they gave me a strange look.

“Chel, wasn’t that a gesture of gratitude?”

“Yes, it’s an old way of showing gratitude, so maybe the younger demon race doesn’t understand it.”

“But it seemed like they understood the language quite well?”

“They are good students. They have learned skills.”

Chel’s eyes dart around. Is she lying? What was the language barrier like when we first came to the demonic land? But it doesn’t matter.

We bid farewell to the demon race that carried the cargo to a place where there were no monsters. Hel drew a magic circle on the sail to create wind, so she said they would be able to return to the Meiju Kingdom faster than usual.

Chel was in charge of trade with the Meiju Kingdom, but she said she wouldn’t be doing anything for a while.

“The Demon King hasn’t fully grown yet, and the demon race is in the midst of a consciousness reform, so I don’t think they’ll be able to get to the demonic land.”

After the ship disappeared from sight, we held a strategy meeting on the beach. It was already midnight, but the magic stone lanterns Hel had made were bright, so we didn’t really feel the darkness. On the contrary, the monsters were attracted to the light, and Jennifer and Lipa were dealing with them.

“Hey, haven’t you two gotten stronger?”

For the first time, Chel asked us about our changes.

“Not really.”

“When you live in the demonic land, you change.”

Jennifer chuckled, and Lipa said it as if it was obvious.

“Hel has become a magical toolmaker, and Sylvia, I thought you didn’t have any monsters under your control?”

“I just realized my life’s mission.”

“T-t-the legend of the vampire won’t be enough to be a force in the demonic land. A-and compared to Makyo, we’ve done almost nothing.”

Chel glares at me, so I hope Sylvia doesn’t say anything unnecessary.

“For now, let’s set up a base in the north before the giant magical beast comes. This place is finished when the sea gets rough, and it was hard to repair the cave we lived in before. I think the old well will be fine, just like the last time the giant magical beast attacked.”

Let’s just ignore Chel and continue the conversation.

“Makyo? Have you learned anything new?”

“Nothing special. I just learned how to make small magic cubes. But more importantly, is it okay to let the monsters Sylvia summoned transport the cargo?”

“I-i-it’s fine.”

“Makyo!?”

Chel grabbed my arm and came close to me.

“What is it?”

“What are the magic cubes?!”

I put my hand on the sand and lifted up a block of sand to show her.

“You see, it’s like this. It’s just that I can surround it with magic and pull it out. It’s also useful for dismantling monsters, so it’s handy.”

Chel scratched her hair and looked at the other women and Lipa.

“Makyo is starting to use space magic normally, isn’t he? Why didn’t you stop him?”

“He developed it on his own.”

Lipa reported anxiously to Chel. Chel’s face turned red, and she trembled.

“You can take everything apart, can’t you?”

“Not really. It seems that I can’t take apart concrete that has been frozen in time by time magic. You know, like the magic circle used for the warehouse foundations.”

“Huh? So you can learn time magic without going to Satra?”

“Satra… That’s the name of a country that’s not peaceful, isn’t it?”

Hel said, looking at Chel.

“Is that the name of a country?”

“It is the name of a confederation of elf villages that once flourished in the north of the continent. It’s long since been dismantled, but it was a racist nation that maintained a system of meritocracy. Where did you hear about that, Chel?”

“The demon king from 1000 years ago told me that if we wanted to learn time magic, we might be able to find out by going to Satra. She also said that deer monsters use time magic.”

“If you want to go after the Deer God, who’s said to be able to manipulate time, you have to go to the Forbidden Forest, but nowadays, people rarely go there. However, there was a deer crest carved next to the magic circle drawn on the concrete of the warehouse. From what Chel said, it seems that they had some interaction with the Satra engineers…”

Hel explained, looking worried. It seems that pursuing time magic is so dangerous.

“Maybe we should listen to what Chel has to say first. What did the demon king of 1000 years ago tell you about the demonic land?”

“First of all, she said that Yggdrasil was not a demonic land but a land of dragon people and that Midgard was moved to a dungeon with the city and was eaten by the giant magical beast.”

“So if we want to go to Midgard, we have to get on the giant magical beast and conquer the dungeon, right?”

“That’s right, but you have to wait 14 days to enter Midgard, so in the real world, it would take three and a half years.”

I don’t know what she’s talking about, but Chel drew a diagram on the beach to explain. First of all, the giant magical beast appears once every three months. That is four days a year. So 14 days is three and a half years. She said that the reason we have to wait 14 days is to prevent infectious diseases.

“Infectious diseases?”

“Those are diseases that are passed from person to person.”

“Even diseases that we have overcome in the past thousand years can be fatal to the people of Midgard.”

“I see, you mean the plague. It would be a nuisance for them, and we don’t want to waste three and a half years, do we? Let’s give up on going to Midgard.”

“Give up?!”

Chel was so surprised that she jumped up a little.

“What? Is that really so surprising?”

“No, I was just a little surprised because when I told the Demon King from 1000 years ago about Makyo, she said that you would probably find a way to get into the giant magic beast without using space-time magic.”

“Don’t tell people things to get their hopes up. The reality is, as you can see.”

“But does that mean you should give up on exploring the giant magical beast and conquering the dungeon?”

Hel had fled to the demonic land to get to Midgard, so she seemed to have her own ideas about it.

“No, you don’t know if you’ll make it or not. Besides, the giant magical beast only appears on one day in the 90 days. 89 days of waiting is a long time.”

Even though I said this, no one seemed to be convinced.

“Well, for example, if we could get to Midgard, how much do you think it would be worth? What we want to know is history and technology, right? In other words, it’s mostly information. If there was some kind of magical communication tool, wouldn’t it be possible to exchange information every three months?”

I thought about the world I had seen in my dream. If there was something that made it easy to talk to people far away, I felt that it would be possible to discuss things when the giant magical beast appeared, when the time axis would be the same.

“But we have to give that magical tool to the people of Midgard.”

“That’s true, but…”

“So you’re going to look for the giant magical beast, attack the dungeon, and then go to the entrance of Midgard, right?”

“Yeah, I guess so. But how are we going to get in there? Even if we use Lipa’s flying broom, there’ll be storms and tornadoes, and lightning will strike, and monsters will fall from the sky, charred black.”

“That’s Makyo’s job to think about.”

“Ew, that sounds really annoying.”

“As the lord of the demonic land, what do you think? Didn’t the King of Estinia order you to explore the demonic land?”

Jennifer asked sarcastically. When I’m politely questioned like this, it makes me even more angry. I don’t know why I should be angry.

“Wait a minute. Aren’t we getting a little off-topic? Let’s set up a base in the north first, and then we’ll go after the giant magical beast.”

“T-t-that’s right.”

“It’s true that not everyone needs to go on the giant magic beast. Those who stay behind will have to wait at the shelter.”

Sylvia and Lipa nodded in agreement.

“This is the demonic land. Let’s think about survival first.”

Chel and Jennifer also nodded, remembering the last time.

“We’ll get the materials locally and take food and tools with us. There’s a roof over the old well, and there shouldn’t be too many monsters.”

“We should take bedding and medicine. I almost died last time.”

“Please be careful of the weather. It can suddenly get cold, so it might be a good idea to take some warm clothes.”

After experiencing the last giant magical beast attack, Chel and Jennifer take the initiative to assemble the luggage. Sylvia and Lipa follow their example, but Hel hesitates when choosing her magical tools.

“I don’t know what I need.”

“Just think about surviving.”

“That’s easy to say… I can’t picture a giant magical beast.”

“Just think of it as a mountain walking.”

“Even if you say that, there are probably storms and tornadoes around that mountain, right? In the first place, what are you using as a landmark to walk by?”

“I don’t know.”

“So you’re walking toward something you can’t predict, right?”

“That’s right.”

“Makyo, aren’t you afraid of things you can’t imagine?”

Hel’s face had turned pale, even though she had just tried to get me to get on that giant magical beast. Her fingers started to tremble.

“Isn’t it the norm in demonic land that unpredictable, unimaginable things happen?”

“Ah, I see. That’s right.”

Hel regained her composure, and the shaking stopped.

“Sorry. Sometimes, I suddenly forget where I am. I thought I was used to the demonic land, but when Makyo and Chel make faces like that…”

“Well, you can see that when you look at the giant magical beast. Let’s not be so afraid of it. You can put your own life first. If you really need to think about something, think about a magical tool for communication.”

“I understand. I’ll do that.”

As everyone prepared in silence, the night began to break.
