Chapter 118 – Day 10 of the Strategy Life
When I woke up, I saw a huge white snake swimming in the underground lake.
Since we were sleeping at the bottom of the well, we were disturbing its home. It didn’t attack us, so I quietly woke everyone up and got out of the well.
“It was sudden. I didn’t even notice.”
Hel washed her face with the water from the canteen and wiped it with a cloth.
“I think it came to check on us because we were in its territory.”
“Should we not keep too much food in the well?”
Jennifer suggests that we consider digging a hole outside to make a food storage area.
“Sylvia, can’t you tame it?”
“I-i-it’s impossible. It’s too big, and I think the effect of the blood will only last for a moment.”
“Did the snake monster also fight the guardian of Midgard?”
Lipa asks suddenly.
Yesterday, we found the remains of a battle between a serpent guardian and a large monster, but it was far from the site of Midgard.
“Do you think they would come that far to fight?”
“Considering their mobility, it’s possible they could have followed. It means that Midgard was very wary of that big skull monster.”
“Well, if it’s that big, everyone would think it’s dangerous.”
But what about the giant monsters? The old people of Midgard tamed monsters as big as mountain ranges.
Jennifer is right.
“D-didn’t you say they were monsters created by scholars?”
“The foolish king of the demon race said they were created by geneticists.”
“So the big monsters in the demonic land are the descendants of the monsters created by those scholars?”
“It is possible.”
“If that’s the case, then the scholar and the Midgard Guardian were enemies?”
“Well, there were the Holy Knights, so I can understand that there was discrimination and conflict, but there may have been forces that were enemies of Midgard.”
“First of all, Midgard may not be a single entity. Not everyone aspires to be the royal capital, and to begin with, the dragonfolk who separated from Midgard created the kingdom of Estinia.”
“Should we ask the spirits again?”
Hel asked me a frightening question.
“Are there other spirits besides Paul?”
“I haven’t told Makyo, but there are probably catacombs at the end of the underground lake in the well.”
“Hel, did you think I’d be afraid and hide it from me?”
I can’t sleep at the bottom of the well anymore.
“I just didn’t tell you. I think most of them have died, but there are some that still wander around on the surface. I think you can at least hear them talking…”
My spine tingled, and I couldn’t help but look behind me. Of course, I couldn’t see anything. I didn’t want to see anything.
“It might be useful to know about the ancient powers of the giant magical beast. Do you mind if I try?”
“It’s okay… but I’ll stay far away.”
“Ha, you’re pathetic.”
Chel sighed and looked at me. I’m afraid of scary things.
“I need a vessel. Can someone go with me to look for the ape monster or the skull?”
“I’ll go.”
“I’ll go too!”
Jennifer and Lipa accepted Hel’s invitation.
“Hey Hel, can’t you use this?”
I showed her the empty cube of the golem and asked her.
“Oh, that’s good…”
Her eyes looked off into the distance.
I turned around, but I couldn’t see anything.
“Is there something there?”
“Yeah, there’s a lot of them rushing in. You might want to put it away for a while.”
I wrapped the golem’s cube in a cloth and gave it to Hel.
“I don’t know what to do with it, but it’s perfect for luring the spirits of the demonic land.”
Hel laughed as she said this, but I want an amulet that will keep the spirits away.
“So, are we going to defeat the snake monster?”
“No, we’re not. If we defeat such a huge monster, something might start breeding, right?”
“Ba-Balance.”
To be honest, if it were up to me, I’d like that giant snake monster to wipe out all the ghost-type monsters underground.
“We just need to rebuild our base. We can just evacuate to the bottom of the well when the giant magical beast appears.”
“L-let’s do that.”
While we were building our base, Chel and I wore coats. We wanted to get used to it as much as possible.
There are a lot of rocks here, so if we pile them up, we can at least protect ourselves from the rain and wind. But while we were building, things like giant catfish the size of houses and bears the same color as the rocks started getting in the way.
If they were just playing around, it would be fine, but they were destroying the houses we were building, so both Chel and I had no choice but to deal with them by freezing them or punching holes in their stomachs. If there were monster corpses lying around, it was common for predators like wyverns to gather around them, attracted by the smell of blood.
The work progressed very slowly.
“A-a-are we going to carve a magic circle with magic?”
Sylvia asked, holding a knife.
“No, we’re going to make a hole in the mountain and hide in it.”
“T-t-that’s no different than bears or wyverns.”
“It’s true that building a shelter within a shelter is ridiculous.”
“So what do we do?”
“How about building an ice wall around the underground lake? When the giant snake’s body temperature drops, it’ll move more slowly.”
“Good idea, let’s do it!”
The giant snake monster had already disappeared somewhere and was no longer near the base.
I asked Chel to make the water in the underground lake rise to the ceiling and freeze it. A wall of ice floated in the underground lake.
“How long will it last?”
“I think it should last about a night, but it’s better to make a magic tool.”
“I-I think we can use the magic circle from the glass.”
“What kind of magic tool will it be?”
“A chain?”
Boom!
As the three of us scratched our heads at the bottom of the well, I heard the sound of something being smashed above us.
Crawling to the ground, I saw a giant golem with three connected human bodies chasing Hel and the others.
Hel’s bow and arrow were repelled by the golem’s rock-like skin, and Lipa’s wooden sword was only dented and quickly repaired, so it didn’t seem to be effective. Somehow, Jennifer’s wall of slime blocked the attacks, but they barely escaped.
“What are you doing? Is this training?”
I asked, not wanting to disturb them.
“Don’t be stupid! Hurry up and help us!”
Chel sent water balls down from the sky, which pierced the golem and slowed it down.
I approached and touched the golem’s body to find the location of the cube. The cube was glowing at the joint. The magic stone should not be there, but it seems to have been revived.
Now that I know where to aim, all I have to do is hit it.
Bam!
The cube flew out, and the golem lost its shape, causing the earth to collapse and form a pile on the ground.
The cube that flew away was wrapped in cloth and tied up.
“Did you find out anything?”
“Jennifer-san put magic power into the cube, and the golem revived.”
“Lipa, you don’t have to tell them!”
Jennifer was angry at Lipa’s interference.
“The old spirits are obsessed with golems. On the other hand, they could be trapped inside the cube, just like in Makyo’s hands.”
Without thinking, I threw the cube wrapped in cloth to Hel.
“Should I just ask those guys…”
I moved as far away from Hel and the others as possible, killing time by throwing the corpses of the devoured monsters into the forest.
Since no one was watching, I took off my coat and stood half naked, the wind cooling my sweat, which felt really good. While I was cooling off, the big bear-like monster that had been by the giant skull came closer. It was breathing heavily and looking at me, but it didn’t seem to want to fight.
I threw the monster’s bones with some flesh on them, and the big bear-like monster took them in its mouth and disappeared into the depths of the forest. Perhaps the monsters are running away because of the giant magical beast, and the food supply is dwindling.
When I returned, the investigation had already ended.
“There is more than one power in Yggdrasil. There are the religious who protect nature, the soldiers in the south, the scholars in the Colosseum, the agronomists on the Sky Island, and the magical toolmakers who build dungeons. It seems that the powers are determined by occupation. It seems that racial discrimination has also been added to the mix, making things more complicated.”
Hel calmly summarized the story she had heard from the old spirits.
“What kind of powers are the ones that stayed in Midgard?”
“It seems that all powers are in Midgard. Although it may have changed over the course of a thousand years.”
“In the end, as Peter says, we have to ask the ‘Keepers of Time’, right?”
“Probably. However, the traces of the conflict that occurred after Midgard began to jump through time remain in the demonic land.”
“After we get on the giant magic beast, we’ll have to excavate that as well.”
As always, there’s a lot to do.
“This can be used. You should take it to the giant magical beast.”
Hel handed the empty cube back to me.
“How do you use it?”
“The inhabitants of Midgard will also die now. They will not become immortal. If you can catch the spirit, you can get information from it.”
“Oh, I see. Chel, I’m counting on you.”
“Eeehh! Seriously?!”
Even as she said this, Chel accepted the golem cube.
“He-He-Hel. I want you to make a magical tool for me.”
“Got it.”
From spiritualism to making magical tools, the Elf of the demonic land is a hard worker.
“The wisdom of the elves is useful.”
“Well, in the Elf Kingdom, spiritualism was considered taboo, and magical tool making, which was not scientifically advanced, was considered a job for lowly dwarves. Thinking about it now, I think I was persecuted because I touched on a hidden history.”
“So for the elves, too, the memories of Yggdrasil are a past they want to forget.”
“Yes, that could be the reason why Satra was dismantled.”
After that, Hel drank the tea Jennifer had made and discussed the making of magical tools with Sylvia.
