Chapter 119 – Day 11 of the Strategy Life

I’ve been thinking since this morning, standing on my hands at the bottom of the well.

Without the magic stone lanterns or the glowing mushrooms, how do they measure time in the pitch dark?

“This could be an unexpected blind spot. What should we do…”

If you’re hungry, it’s time to eat, and if you’re tired, it’s time to sleep.

“Can’t we just get on the giant magical beast and come back when we get tired?”

I asked everyone at breakfast.

“Why don’t you just go back when you want to go back?”

“If it takes even a little longer, it’ll be three months. I don’t want that.”

“But didn’t you say that you wasted time as an adventurer?”

“I don’t mind wasting time if it’s my own decision, but why should I waste time because of those old guys!”

“You won’t age for another three months.”

“So are you going, Hel?”

“It’s not like anything will change in three months…”

Hel seemed to realize this in the middle of her speech.

“But everyone changed a lot when I went back to the demon kingdom for a week.”

“Indeed, I wonder how much Makyo-san will change if he’s not there for three months?”

“If you weigh three months in the demonic land against one day with the giant magical beast, which is more valuable…”

“Th-There’s no need to ask. Will you change yourself, or will someone else change you?”

“It also depends on who is changing, right?”

Lipa asked a basic question.

“Exactly. There’s no reason for you to change in a way that suits the ancients, and to begin with, the environment of the giant magic beast is special. Even if you were to change, you might not have any skills or abilities that you could use elsewhere. If that’s the case, it would be a waste, wouldn’t it?”

“They say that even experiences that seem useless can be used, but if time jumps, then that means that the experience itself doesn’t exist…”

“That’s why it’s important to measure the length of the day in the dark, right? Maybe we won’t eat that much during the day, so we don’t have to worry about our stomachs…”

“And I’ll be involved too, right? Everyone, please give me some ideas.”

Chel bowed her head in a normal way. When it comes to things that involve her, she seems to get desperate.

“The flowers will change depending on the weather, and it’s going to be stormy that day, right?”

“H-h-how long do the glowing mushrooms last?”

“Surprisingly, they disappear as soon as you pick them. Should we measure the speed at which the bendgrass withers?”

“Should we check the size of the magic stone in the magic stone lantern and make it disappear in a day?”

“I think the amount of magic power consumed will vary depending on the location. Hmm…”

Everyone started to think while biting into their breakfast bread.

“Why don’t we look for the place where the giant magical beast disappears?”

As usual, Lipa hit the nail on the head.

“If we can find that, we might be able to tell when we get close to it.”

“I think the sandworms from the desert should be falling, right?”

“Shall we check? I wonder if we’ll make it in time before the giant magical beast attacks.”

“Let’s make it in time.”

Hel suddenly began to take charge. Come to think of it, it was Hel and the others who had followed the tracks of the giant magical beast.

“First of all, Sylvia, Lipa, and I don’t have enough movement speed. We’ll stay here at this base and prepare the things you’ll take with you. We’ll also need to get more food in case we have to stay behind the giant magical beast. This should be enough for us. You guys follow the tracks of the giant magical beast.”

“Okay.”

“Eh? Me too?”

Jennifer pointed at herself and widened her eyes.

“Jennifer, you stop them. Make sure they don’t go too far and don’t come back before the giant magical beast appears.”

“I understand… Are you sure it’ll be okay?”

“If you concentrate on moving, won’t it be okay?”

“We just follow the tracks to where it disappears, right? It’ll be fine.”

I quickly finished my breakfast and wrapped the meat in butterbur leaves to make a bento.

As I finished the simple preparations, Sylvia approached me.

“Hmm?”

Sylvia handed me a leather cloak.

“Do I really have to wear it?”

“I-I-I’ve put sweat-absorbing pads in the armpits and back.”

“Okay.”

I don’t like wearing coats because I feel like they restrict my movement, but I’ll have to get used to it. I need to stay hydrated because I’m going to sweat a lot. I’ve prepared a big water bag. I’ll have Chel carry it as well.

“Makyo, what about the water ball tent?”

“It’s just a stick, so we’ll take it with us just in case.”

“Just a fur coat?”

“If we need it, we’ll take it. We can get more on the way.”

While Chel and I got ready, Jennifer frantically stuffed breakfast into her mouth.

By the time we were finished, Jennifer had finally started to get ready.

“Jennifer, just take whatever you need.”

“What should I take? Should I take a shield?”

“We’re not going to fight, so you won’t need one.”

“We’re not going to fight?”

“Just take the furs for the sleeping quarters. Jennifer just has to keep us from overdoing it.”

“I think that’s the hardest part…”

“Well, you’ll know when the time comes.”

Chel hands Jennifer the furs, and we leave.

“Well, Hel, you’re in charge.”

“Got it.”

“I-I-I don’t think we have much time, so please come back as soon as possible.”

“Have a good trip!”

We ran through the rocky area and entered the coniferous forest, with the three of them keeping watch.

We had confirmed the tracks of the giant magic beast the day before, so we followed them south. It seemed that the monsters had already fled, and there was no sign of them.

On the way, we crossed the forest, but the tracks were almost heading south, so we didn’t seem to be lost.

“We’ll be running soon, so if you need anything, you want to get it on the way?”

“Isn’t this just a snack? I have flour.”

“What about Jennifer?”

“How long do you think we’ll be running?”

“I mean, we’re going to run with all our magic power in our legs.”

We’re just starting to run now, so we’re not going very fast. The forest looks calm, so as long as there aren’t any particularly high cliffs or valleys, we’ll keep going at full speed.

“Even if we run into monsters, we’ll just leave them behind, so it’s better if you tell me what you need now.”

“I’m a little hesitant to try it…”

“Understood. Just follow Chel, and if anything jumps at you, just flick it away…”

“Huh? Haa…”

At least she answered, so I guess it’s okay.

“Okay, let’s go.”

I started to run, concentrating my magic on my legs.

Every step felt like a long way, and I ran through the forest, alternating between footprints and the forest itself. I blew away the branches and bushes in the forest with my backhand and knife and kicked away any pesky monsters.

I looked back to see if they were following, and only Chel was keeping up. Jennifer was far behind, using her slime wall to fend off the monsters.

“Jennifer, if you pay attention to every monster, you won’t get anywhere, so just ignore them!”

“But the ice magic…”

Chel impaled the ice weasel, attacking Jennifer with her flaming spear.

“Just concentrate on running. You’re wasting your magic.”

Chel said without an accent and immediately started running.

Jennifer finally started running as well. I watched her to make sure she didn’t fall off the cliffs and valleys, but she managed to keep up with me by using the slime walls.

A pack of gray wolves chased after us, but they couldn’t keep up with our speed and soon gave up. There were a lot of fallen trees, but we just made a hole in them and kept going.

As we approached the site of Midgard, we saw a lot of Guardian Spiders imitating rocks, but we weren’t armed, so they didn’t attack us.

“Hey, Makyo, do you want to take a break?”

“Hmm? Oh, are you sweating?”

“No, Jennifer’s falling behind.”

When I looked back, Jennifer and I had fallen behind.

“Then let’s take a break.”

It’s still before noon, but we take a break to rehydrate and help Jennifer. When I took off my coat, I realized I’d been sweating quite a bit. I didn’t bring any spare clothes, so I washed them in the lake where the migrating monsters swim gracefully and had Chel dry them with a wind spell.

“It’s a waste of time to dry them, so I guess we really need a change of clothes on the giant magical beast.”

“Yes. I wonder if the monsters here don’t evacuate?”

“Well, that’s true…”

While we were watching the lake monsters, Jennifer caught up with us. Unlike us, she wasn’t wearing a coat, but she was sweating profusely.

“Let’s take a break. Make sure you rehydrate.”

“Okay.”

“If you want to wash your clothes, Chel can dry them for you.”

“Chel-san! You’re naked!”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. Is that a problem?”

When I think of it, Chel also washes her clothes with her upper body exposed.

“But Makyo-san is here!”

“Are you really worried about that now?”

“The demonic land is harsh, but we don’t have to throw away our dignity, too!”

“Oh, I see. I’ll close my eyes. Let me know if you can cover it up. “I did it.”

Chel had just put on her coat.

Jennifer wanted to wash her clothes as well, so I decided to go back into the woods and cook some meat for lunch.

“If we do this every time we take a break, it’s going to take a long time, isn’t it?”

Chel came up to me and asked.

“I think it’s important to keep your dignity. Well, when we’re riding the giant magical beast, we’re not in a position to worry about such things, so I think we can ignore it.”

“It depends on the time and situation. Do you think Makyo would be excited to see us naked now?”

“No, I don’t think so. I think I’d be more worried about what would happen if you suddenly got big breasts.”

“I think I’d be surprised, too.”

While Chel and I were talking about silly things, Jennifer came in with the wet laundry.

“What were you two talking about?”

“Whether or not big breasts could be an object of worship.”

“What!?”

Jennifer quickly covered her breasts.

“I was just joking.”

As soon as the clothes are dry, we’ll leave.

I want to see if the tracks continue into the desert today. It seems that storms and tornadoes reach the desert, but I wonder how far the giant magical beast will go.

After passing through the rocky area of the Guardian Spider, we quickly made our way to the mangrove swamp. We also passed through the swamp where we had chased the Ghost Dog a while ago.

The waterweed-covered ground was quite sunken. It seems that this is where the giant magical beast walked. I wonder if the buried remains of the village have been crushed as well.

I used my speed to fend off the swarms of mosquitoes that attacked me, but I was bitten in several places. I used some healing potion as I ran.

It seems that the area around here was the territory of the giant crocodile, and we were chased many times. The crocodile was much larger than the rock crocodile—about as tall as a two-story house.

If you were hit by its tail, you might be blown to the desert. We couldn’t fight it, so we ran south as fast as we could.

Gradually, the number of trees attacking us increased, and we were hindered by Arachne’s nests and swarms of poisonous scorpions, but Chel burned them all down beforehand.

“Running around is so boring.”

Maybe it’s because Jennifer is here, but she seems to be trying to act like an older sister.

It was long past noon, but Jennifer had broken through her limits and was riding high on her momentum, so we headed straight for the desert.

As the sun was setting and Chel’s sweat was reaching its limit, we reached the desert.

In the distance, a sandworm jumped out of the sand, kicking up a cloud of dust.

“Let’s make this our campsite for the night.”

Chel and I prepared for the night. During the night, the plants of the forest would probably start to grow. We protected ourselves with the sand wall and the magic cube.

Jennifer arrived late and exhausted. She had been bitten by mosquitoes on her face and arms and was on the verge of dehydration. I gave her some healing potions and a water bag.

“Can you eat? You should eat.”

“I’ll eat later…”

Jennifer had taken off her clothes and was lying on the sand, naked from the waist up. She seemed to have abandoned all sense of shame and decency.

After a while, I could hear her breathing, so I covered her with a fur coat.

The desert nights are cold.
