Chapter 120 – Day 12 of the Strategy Life

“This is too much!”

Jennifer was angry as she rubbed the healing potion all over her body, which was aching from the exertion. She seemed to be referring to our speed of movement.

“It’s too much for Jennifer but normal for us. We don’t get sore muscles, we don’t run out of magic power, and we don’t go crazy.”

As Chel said, it was our normal operating speed.

“At least we know that the giant magic beast has reached the desert. We’ll escape as soon as it reaches the desert.”

“You mean it didn’t go further than the desert?”

“There’s no way to check now. The footprints and everything else are buried in the sand.”

“Can’t you find out by searching the ground?”

“I don’t know. There’s also the possibility that another golem will appear…”

We looked out over the desert, where a sandstorm was raging.

“Are you listening to me?”

Jennifer asked, coming closer.

“I wasn’t listening. What were you saying?”

“I said your speed is abnormal.”

“Maybe it’s because we’re in a demon land, but that’s the speed we need to live as humans. Jennifer is just slow right now. You’ll get used to it.”

“No, that can’t be right…”

“Because Chel and I have only spent a little more time in this demonic land than Jennifer.”

“But isn’t that just because you and Chel have talent?”

“I’ve never even been promoted as an adventurer, and if it’s just talent, Jennifer’s better than me, right? Don’t try to fool me with words like that. Whether you have talent or not, whether you can make it on your own or not, you can’t keep fighting with yourself like that. You see, the rules in the demonic realm are a little different, so we’re just fighting to survive. Right?”

I said, pointing at the plants that were all growing out of the desert at once.

Jennifer bit her lower lip and fell silent.

“Well, after we’ve had breakfast and filled our stomachs, we’ll try to explore the sand. If we find a golem, we’ll deal with it.”

“Got it!”

Jennifer nodded.

For a while, the sound of Chel baking bread could be heard in the desert.

“Are you thinking about the possibility that we might not be able to come back?”

Chel asked me in a low voice without an accent as she handed me the baked bread.

“Of course, I’m thinking about it. Hel can’t use magic, and Sylvia’s abilities are special. Lipa is still more interested in fighting. Until we come back, we’ll have to ask Jennifer to take care of the demonic land.”

“I see. It’s burned.”

Chel was some distance away, curled up in a fur and checking the remaining water in the water bag. She also gave Jennifer some bread.

After breakfast, Chel and I put on our coats. We’ll also be wearing masks and work gloves today. After strapping on all our gear and preparing to run, I searched the desert underground.

The magic I released bounced back and told me where the buried things were. There were many large monster bones and fossilized trees, but I could see the remains of a stone road leading straight south. It was probably an ancient road.

There were no golem figures.

“It’s just the remains of a highway. I can’t see any traces of the giant magical beast’s footsteps. When the giant magical beast lands, we’ll escape before we reach the desert. Then we’ll see how far it goes.”

“So the operation is to come back, right?”

Jennifer asked to make sure.

“That’s right.”

“Then let’s go back and get ready.”

“Okay, then let’s go back.”

“Will you go back the same speed you came?”

“Of course.”

I’ll ask Jennifer to do a little more.

We started running in the opposite direction of the giant magical beast’s tracks.

As usual, the giant crocodile monster is waiting with its mouth wide open. Since we’re not tired yet, all three of us pass through without a fight. It chases after us, but it’s not fast enough to catch us. I thought it would give up, but it knocked down trees and crossed the tracks, destroying the forest shelter where the monsters were gathered.

Suddenly, I, who was running at the front, stopped at the edge of the swamp on the tracks. The other two stop as well.

“Jennifer, how long did Hel say we should be back?”

“She said it would take about three days to find out where the giant magical beast was going…”

“So we still have time, right?”

“What are you going to do?”

Without answering Jennifer’s question, I wait for the giant crocodile monster to come towards us.

“Are you going to do it?”

Chel asked, concentrating her magic power in her hands.

“No, I’m not going to kill it. I just thought it would be better if you moved aside.”

I said and walked towards the approaching giant crocodile monster.

The giant crocodile seemed to sense something, but it didn’t stop and seemed to want to bite me.

I filled my whole body with magic power and closed the distance in one go. I dodged the bite that seemed to bring down the whole building, and then I stepped onto its side and slammed my fist into it. It didn’t feel like I was hitting something soft, like a rock, but I managed to knock the giant crocodile over.

Right after that, Chel froze the giant crocodile’s chest with ice magic.

“I told you not to kill it, right?”

“I didn’t kill it. Look, there’s a burn mark here. It’s a huge body, so its body temperature must have risen. It’s probably using the magic stone to dissipate the heat, but since it’s moving more than that, it’s only burning around the stone.”

“Did you cool it down?”

“Yes. And it slows it down. Reptiles are weak to cold.”

It’s certainly turned over, so it should be able to fight, but the giant crocodile is frozen and doesn’t move. I checked its insides, and it seemed to be breathing, and its heart was beating.

“Then let’s carry it.”

“Where do you want to carry it?”

“Well, as far away from the path the giant magical beast will take as possible.”

I grabbed its tail and slowly dragged the giant crocodile along.

Shuf-shuf.

If you concentrate your magic power throughout your body and increase your muscle strength, you can carry it.

“Why would you do that?”

“If we get on the back of a giant magical beast, there’s a chance that we could destroy its shell, right? Then the giant magical beast’s stride might change, right?”

The giant magical beast has lived for ten thousand years, the foolish king told Chel.

“You mean the monsters that take refuge between the footprints might be crushed?”

“That’s right.”

“Then why? What’s the point of saving monsters?”

“Small monsters and plants can reproduce quickly, but there aren’t that many big monsters in the demonic land. If such big monsters disappear, the ecosystem might collapse all at once, you know?”

“So you want to protect the ecosystem by letting the big monsters go, right?”

“That’s right. Even though it will probably be destroyed by the storm anyway, the demonic land is a place where impossible things can happen, so I want to get it as far away as possible. After all, I’m the landowner of the demonic land.”

“If that’s the case, it will be faster to hit it with a wind magic attack. That giant crocodile probably has a strong life force, so it won’t die.”

I accepted Chel’s opinion. I unleashed a wind magic attack with my fist and hit the giant crocodile as hard as I could.

Whoosh!

A gust of wind blew the giant crocodile far away.

“At this rate, we’ll be able to drive out the monsters hiding between the footprints.”

“It’s hard to judge how much power to use.”

“Can you really do that?”

Jennifer still looked confused.

“Jennifer, make me a flashlight. I can’t concentrate if I’m being bitten by mosquitoes.”

“Okay.”

Even though Jennifer was still confused, she listened to the instructions and did as she was told.

There were no monsters in the footprints, but there were quite a few hiding in the forest. They made caves and nests, but we chased them out and destroyed them, moving them to one side or the other.

As we worked, we also started to sweat more. If we had just run, we would have had to stop only once, but we couldn’t stand it. We took frequent breaks and continued north, replenishing our water and eating cam fruit.

The flashlight was effective against mosquitoes, and they didn’t come anywhere near the smoke. This was probably because they would die if the soot got stuck in their windpipes. It seems that this was an essential item in the mangrove swamp.

I also gave the Rock Spider Guardian a good smack and sent it flying. I wasn’t armed, so it was caught off guard. After I blew up about three of them, they all started moving at once, as if they’d recognized me as a target, but Chel and Jennifer used magic to create a wall, so I was able to blow them up one by one.

It would have been fine to leave them as rocks, but it’s scary when they suddenly start moving after being buried in the ground.

It was evening, and we decided to make the ruins of Midgard our campsite for the day.

“As usual, the monsters here are pretty relaxed.”

“These are migratory monsters, so when push comes to shove, they’ll fly away.”

“You could say they’re taking the demonic land lightly.”

Chel stole eggs from the migratory monsters and used them to make bread.

“They’re tough on monsters outside the demonic land, aren’t they?”

Sometimes, it’s necessary to show them reality.

The bread with the eggs was surprisingly delicious.

“It’s delicious!”

“No matter what happens, we can trust Chel’s appetite.”
