Chapter 26 – My Own Path

Maurice blinked.

Then, he smiled and shook his head slightly from side to side.

“I don’t know what the gods want from you. It would be presumptuous to try to guess their intentions. Only the gods know, don’t you agree?

I see…”

“I’m just a professor, not a spokesperson for the gods. Since this is the royal capital, there are many churches dedicated to different gods. If you want to learn their teachings, knock on the door of a church.”

“Thank you.”

“Are you discouraged? You seem very depressed.”

“Yes.”

“Why? Do you want to know the gods’ intentions so badly?”

Asked so bluntly, Wataru was at a loss for words.

To answer directly would expose his shame.

However, he decided that trying to cover it up would be even more embarrassing and chose to reveal his true feelings.

“I thought maybe I had some special mission. Maybe I was just being arrogant.”

“It’s natural for people to want to be special. Since the day we were born, we’ve wanted our lives to have meaning. Whether we say it out loud or not, everyone has the same desire. Well, I don’t know if you have a mission or not.”

“That’s right. Maybe it really is just a coincidence. I’ve always been lucky.”

Wataru laughed self-deprecatingly.

Perhaps the gods are most surprised that Wataru can use the gate.

“Some weird guy is using the gate! It’s a bug!”

It was amusing to imagine the gods panicking.

Apparently, there are apostles who receive divine revelations or messages from the gods and set out on journeys.

Come to think of it, Wataru had never heard the gods’ voices.

He could only use the gate.

The thought made him feel ashamed, like he wanted to dig a hole and bury himself in it.

“Even if the gods doesn’t say anything, it’s possible that you are getting the results you want,”

“What do you mean?”

“The very act of you using the gate and engaging in some kind of activity might be fulfilling the gods’ will. With our shallow human understanding, we can’t know the gods’ thoughts. It’s a situation where we can neither confirm nor deny it.”

“I see.”

He crossed over to another world, acquired a fortune, and bought slaves like Mariel and Aire.

If anything, he was satisfying his worldly desires.

Even so, is this what the gods intended?

Or is it a reward for fulfilling the gods’ will?

“Either way, I don’t think there’s any point in worrying about it. If the gods truly want you to do something, they’ll provide an oracle. Until then, you should just follow your heart.”

“Thank you. I guess you’re right.”

“Besides, if the gods were to make an unreasonable demand of you—something you don’t want—would you just obey without question? For example, what if they ordered you to give up your precious slaves?”

“…No, I wouldn’t. I’m sure I will fight the gods with all my might.”

“If you do what is right in your heart, there is no need to hesitate. Live as you wish.”

“My worries are gone, and I feel refreshed!”

It felt as if the fog in his mind had cleared.

He wouldn’t obey all of the gods’ demands.

If he were asked to hurt someone or throw himself into certain death, he would refuse or take other measures.

With this mindset, there was no need to worry about things that hadn’t been said yet.

The slaves, who had been watching Wataru with concern but remained silent, raised their voices cheerfully.

Aire gently took Wataru’s hand.

The soft, warm touch of her hand gave him courage.

“That’s good, Master.”

“Hmph, that’s a nice thing to say.”

I’m glad you’re feeling better, Master!”

“Fufu, you seem to be quite loved.”

“They’re too good for me.”

He didn’t know why he had been blessed with such good fortune.

But it was a big deal that he could just let it go.

He could act as he pleased, just as he had when he first realized his good fortune.

Wataru raised his gaze.

Maurice was just smiling.

After making up his mind, Wataru felt lighthearted.

His expression brightened, and a new strength appeared in his eyes.

With his heart lightened, he asked the question that had been on his mind:

“May I ask you again?”

“What is it?”

“All the shrines I’ve used so far have been very dirty. Do you think cleaning them would improve their performance?”

“If you ask me, I’d say yes.”

“Why is that?”

“The gods carved the characters with their power. Words and characters are powerful. All magicians know this from the beginning. The gods’ characters are very powerful. However, if their power as characters is damaged for some reason, it will be difficult for them to exert their power.”

Maurice wrote the characters engraved on the shrine on a piece of paper and smeared them with a brush.

The shrine in the northern teleportation destination was covered in mud and vines and could no longer function.

The gate in Southern Ship Town was only partially covered.

This difference likely caused the difference in output.

“Actually, I don’t know where the teleportation destination is, but it seems like a magical disaster is happening there. I received a report that the area was filled with extremely high-density magic.”

“Hm, so there’s a shrine in such a place?”

“Yes, and the gate opened for a surprisingly short time.”

Wataru explained the situation succinctly.

He also mentioned the duration of the gate and how long it took to restart, along with his hypothesis.

This was the first time Maurice had heard of such a situation, so he leaned forward and listened intently.

“A relationship between the magic disaster and the gate’s duration? It seems natural to assume so. However, it’s a troublesome problem.”

“What should we do? I thought about surrounding the area with anti-magic materials.”

“That’s not a bad idea. You could use cloth, metal plates, block walls, or other materials.”

“But can a magic disaster even be solved?”

“It would take time, effort, and money.”

Maurice agreed to teach him specific methods.
