Chapter 27 – Magic Disaster and the Gate

Maurice bluntly explained the cause of the magical disaster.

When magic power exceeds a certain threshold in places affected by the use of great magic in the past, or in places called dragon veins, it remains in one place and forms a pool. Normally, magic power flows and diffuses.

“Dragon veins accumulate magic power little by little, so if left unchecked, the situation will only worsen.”

“I see.”

It was unclear which of the two was the cause of the magical disaster in the ancient city he had seen after being teleported there.

He thought both were possible.

“Which do you think it is, Aire?”

“Both.”

“Hmm, that makes it quite difficult to solve.”

“What specific methods can we consider?”

“As a basic principle, the only solution is to reduce the concentration of magic, but the question is how to do that. For example, we could bring in a material that absorbs magic and use it elsewhere.”

“So, to put it simply, you mean absorbing it with magic stones and using it in magic tools?”

Wataru understood that it was similar to extracting oil and gas to burn in stoves or run cars.

Seeing the look of understanding on Wataru’s face, Maurice continued.

“We could grow plants that store large amounts of magic power, transport them to another location, and then disperse or increase the fluidity of the magic power from outside the magic disaster area.”

“None of those measures seem like they could be implemented overnight.”

“No, they wouldn’t. Furthermore, areas with high concentrations of magic power are harmful to humans and tend to be inhabited by ferocious monsters capable of wielding great magic power. It would be a very dangerous task. It’s no small feat.”

“I’ll start by thinking about what we can do.”

“Fufufu, it’s interesting that you’re still not giving up after hearing this. What drives you so much?”

“I just want to try it.”

It’s not about something as difficult as the will of the gods. It’s a special experience that has been given to him.

Wataru wished to take care of the shrine and repay the place that allowed him to teleport.

He was also curious to find valuable relics from ancient ruins.

“This has been quite a long conversation.”

“I have one last question.”

“What is it?”

“I’ve been looking at the structure of several gates. Do you think it would be possible to recreate them by writing the exact same characters?”

Maurice was at a loss for words for a moment.

Not only Maurice, but also Wataru’s slaves, Mariel and Aire, held their breath.

Had he asked something strange?

“Build a gate? Fufufu, that’s an interesting idea. I thought you were devout, yet you speak so fearlessly. You’re a strange type.”

“Fearless?”

“Yes, you are. You want to recreate the work of the gods with your own hands.”

“Oh… I wasn’t thinking that deeply. I just thought it would be convenient to have one near where I live.”

“Most people would think that but wouldn’t say it out loud. But that’s fine. I’ll tell you my thoughts.”

“Please.”

Maurice laughed with genuine amusement, and Wataru could only shrink back.

The difference between a world where the existence of gods is felt up close and Wataru’s sensibility as a modern Japanese person who respects the gods but does not really believe in them became clear.

This sensibility could not be shared with Mariel, Aire, or Cloche.

Their norms are different, so aligning them will take more time.

“To conclude, it is possible in theory, but not in reality.”

“Why is that? If you can reproduce the written characters exactly, why can’t you use the technique?”

“There are two reasons.”

“Two?”

The specific numbers made it clear that it was impossible.

“First, it would be impossible to obtain the materials. Writing the characters is not enough; you need the same materials to make it work. It’s a special alloy made with lost technology that can’t be reproduced with current technology.”

“I see…”

“It’s said to be refined from rare metals like adamantite, hihirokane, mithril, and orichalcum. That is why it does not wear out, even after a long time.”

“Hearing that, it does seem almost impossible.”

Those are amazing-sounding metals.

So, such metals exist in this world?

Oh, but wasn’t hihirokane a metal mined in Japan?

Wataru couldn’t tell if they were exactly the same or if the translation function was translating mythical and legendary metals similarly.

Either way, it seemed certain that he would need to prepare a generous amount of rare ore and metals.

“Would you like to hear the second reason?”

“Yes, please. It’s easier to give up if I understand the reason clearly.”

“The second reason is that even if you use the same material and write the same words, the effects will differ depending on the user.”

“What do you mean?”

“Do you have any knowledge or experience with magic?”

“I don’t know if I have any experience, but I definitely don’t have any knowledge. Maybe my slaves can use it, though.”

Wataru turned his face away, and Mariel and the others responded.

“I have magical power, but I haven’t trained it.”

“I’m not completely incapable of using magic, but I can only use it to strengthen my body. I don’t really feel like using it.”

“I can use magic!”

“Oh, so you can use magic, Cloche.”

“Hehe, what Cloche can do is just a basic spell.”

“Geez! That doesn’t mean it’s useless!” Cloche retorted.

“Hmm, you’re all very talented. Come to think of it, you also noticed that I’m a magician.”

It was Aire who noticed.

So it seems that they all have some basic knowledge.

Is that so unusual?

Or is it because the three of them have unusual backgrounds?

If Wataru can use it, he’d like to try it, too.

“Let’s get back to the topic. Magic varies in effect depending on the user. Even if you imitate the teleportation circle created by the gods of time and space, achieving the same effect is almost impossible. An extremely powerful magician might be able to use teleportation magic, but I don’t think you can do it.”

Hearing this, Wataru realized it was obvious and gave up.

After that, Wataru thanked Maurice and left the academy.

He had a cheerful expression and walked with energy.

Seeing Wataru’s happiness, the three slaves also brightened up.

“You seem happy.”

“That’s great! I’m happy when you’re happy.”

“You seemed very calm in the middle of the conversation.”

“Yeah, it’s like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I realized I was putting too much pressure on myself.”

Wataru hadn’t even realized what he had been worrying about.

It was as if a thorn that had been stuck in his heart had been pulled out.

“Coming to this different world and becoming so happy made me feel like I owed the gods an unpayable debt. The debt kept growing, and someday it might have crushed me. But Professor Maurice made me realize that I didn’t have to accept the divine will. I don’t have to do what I’m told. I can do what I want.”

Do what he wants.

Live the way he wants.

He wants to become wealthy, live luxuriously, and have experiences that others can only dream of.

He wants to be famous.

He wants those things just as much as he wants to bring the best products from both worlds together to make someone else happy.

He is overflowing with a desire to be useful to the world.

“I’m sure I’ll bother you guys a lot from now on, but I’m counting on you.”

“We understand. We’ll do our best to support you.”

“I’ll do my best with what I can do.”

“With me here, we’re as strong as a hundred men! Ohohoho!”

“Cloche, you’re too loud.”

“T-that’s unfair! That’s unfair, Onee-sama!”

The bright voices of Wataru and the others echoed through the air at the station where the return carriage was waiting.
