Chapter 175 – Day 6 of Management Life
It was noisy outside while I was sleeping. Assuming someone would call me if anything happened, I burrowed deeper into my fur coat.
“Um…”
It seemed that Kahiman had already entered my room. He stood still.
Meanwhile, I could hear hurried footsteps outside.
“What’s going on?”
I poked my head out from under the fur and looked at Kahiman.
“A monster…”
“Did they ask you to call me?”
Kahiman nodded in the dark room. Surely Hel and Sylvia could handle it. It was probably just a slightly larger monster that had appeared nearby. If I ignored it and went back to sleep…
BOOM!
There seemed to be a loud explosion in the distance.
I stretched and got up.
“What’s that noise? What’s going on?”
I asked Hel and Sylvia, who were by the bonfire, as I went out of the cave.
It was still dark, and the eastern sky was not yet white.
“Oh, you woke Makyo up…”
Hel praised Kahiman.
“What was that sound?”
The explosion sounded like it came from the east.
“Li-Lipa is heading out to check it out. Katan is going with him.”
Sylvia was wearing a new breastplate that she had just made.
It seemed she was planning to go to the scene, too.
“Hel, will you stay here?”
“Are you kidding? Why do you think we woke you up, Makyo?”
She slung a crossbow and quiver over her shoulder.
Kahiman remained silent as usual.
“If you can keep up, follow us. If not, wait for us at the crocodile ranch.”
Kahiman replied briefly, “Yes.”
I tied a strap around my back to carry Hel.
“You just woke up. Don’t fall.”
“Hold on tight.”
Hel’s arms and legs clung tightly to my torso.
Sylvia handed me a large fur cape, which I wrapped around Hel.
“Okay, let’s go.”
We ran down the slope and along the edge of the swamp.
The sounds were intermittent, and the imps were screaming, “Gyaaaah!” The Rock Crocodiles at the crocodile ranch were looking toward the eastern sky with concern, too.
I jumped over the sleeping monsters and used my magic to hurl flying branches and nuts to knock them away.
Looking up at the red sky ahead, I saw smoke rising.
The location was near the botanical garden’s dungeon.
“Lipa! Are you there!?”
I called out, but my voice was drowned out by the monsters. Despite it being dark, the “migrating” monsters in the ruins of Midgard were noisy.
“I’ll call him,”
Hel said in my ear. She untied the rope and landed on the ground.
She took out an arrow with a cylindrical tip and fired it into the sky with her crossbow.
Piiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
A high-pitched sound rang out. It seemed to be a whistling arrow.
“Monsters and Guardian Spiders are gathering. I’ll leave it to you.”
“Leave it to me. It’s no problem.”
Crack!
A Guardian Spider appeared, breaking trees and spewing black smoke. Their movements were sluggish, as if branches were stuck inside them.
Woosh!
It attacked with heat rays, but its legs were short, and it was leaning, so it flew in a completely different direction from us.
I felt sorry for it, so I stopped it.
“Did anyone bring any palm tree sap?”
I turned around, but Sylvia and Hel shook their heads. Kahiman was nowhere to be seen.
“We’ll have to get it fixed at the military base.”
I picked up a rock and pushed it into the hole where the Guardian Spider had been firing its heat rays, holding it in place. It tried to cast a spell, so I trapped it in a magic cube.
Gyaa! Gyaa! Gyaa!
A griffin flew in. It was the size of a cow and appeared to be young. It appeared to be a “migrating” monster that had emerged from the ruins of Midgard.
“Makyo-san!”
Lipa and Katan flew in on broomsticks, too.
“The flock is almost here!”
Katan screamed while clinging to Lipa. Her whole body was purple. Hopefully, it wasn’t her own blood.
“I’ll send them back to their nests one by one, so hold them off for a moment.”
“”Got it.””
Hel and Sylvia readied their weapons.
Gyaa!
I grabbed the front legs of the attacking griffin and slammed it into the ground.
“You’ve gotten pretty big.”
When I brought my face close, the griffin tried to bite me with its beak.
Bang!
I slapped its jaw as hard as I could.
“Guh,” it groaned, rolling its eyes back.
I grabbed it by the neck and threw it toward the ruins of Midgard.
“Next, you!”
At my shout, Sylvia and Hel jumped back.
The griffin let out a cry and lunged forward.
Pong!
I knocked it unconscious with the palm of my hand and threw it back toward the ruins of Midgard.
“Next!”
I continued shaking their heads until they were unconscious and returned them to the ruins of Midgard. The griffins were light on their feet, and, being young, their attacks were straightforward.
After dealing with the griffins, we settled down near the botanical garden dungeon.
“Do you have any palm tree sap, Lipa, or Katan?”
“Yes, I do!”
Katan took a small pot out of her bag.
“Let me borrow it.”
After warming the jar, I applied the sap to the legs of the Guardian Spider. Then, I tied them up with Arachne’s thread.
With all the griffins gone, everyone put away their weapons, and we were able to capture the spider without resistance.
“Lipa, can you lift it with your flying broom?”
“I’ll try!”
Lipa tied the spider with a rope, flew up into the air, and lifted it.
“It looks like it’ll work.”
“Then let’s take it to the military base dungeon in the desert later. Maybe they can fix it.”
“L-later? Aren’t you going to break it?”
Sylvia asked in surprise.
“Magic machines can’t reproduce on their own, right? If it can be repaired, it’s better to fix it. Let’s keep it in the botanical garden dungeon.”
The eastern sky was beginning to turn white.
“I’m hungry.”
For now, I’ll leave the Guardian Spider in the botanical garden dungeon where there’s no one around. If it stays near the entrance, it’ll probably get tangled in the vines.
I’ll hurry home for breakfast.
“By the way, why is Katan stained purple?”
“Oh! I think it’s because of this.”
She took out the purple sweet potato, which is said to contain a lot of magic, and showed it to me.
“It looks like the griffin dug it up with its front legs and ate it. For some reason, though, the Guardian Spider activated, and they started fighting and causing a commotion.”
“I see. The ‘migrating’ monsters also have to return to Cliff Garuda. They need to train in the demonic land.”
“W-will the monsters from the ruins of Midgard keep appearing?”
Sylvia asked.
“Probably. Food is limited, after all.”
“This is going to be a hassle…”
Hel muttered.
It must be because transportation to the genetic research institute’s dungeon will be difficult.
“Well, let’s talk about it later.”
Before we knew it, the imp’s cries had stopped, and it had grown quiet.
I picked up Kahiman at the crocodile ranch and went home, yawning.
I was making turtle soup for breakfast when Chel and Jennifer woke up.
“Did something happen?”
“Yes…”
I’ll let the other two know what’s going on at the center.
“The ‘migrating’ monsters are becoming active.”
“Ugh, we’ll have trouble carrying the luggage to the dungeon dwellers.”
Chel frowned, as did Hel and the others.
“Ah! Let’s also get supplies from the East Coast. We can use goods traded from the Kingdom of Meiju.”
“Oh, I forgot. Let’s do that. We’re busy here, too, so make sure the dungeon dwellers work hard.”
Last night, I received a report from Chel and the others about their investigation in the north. Apparently, dog flowers are blooming in the rocky northern area, turning it into a field of dogs. Because of this, monsters are moving south. I have no idea what that means, but in the demonic land, it’s considered possible.
“By the way, Makyo-san, did you go to the trading town they’re building outside the demonic land?”
Jennifer asked.
“Yes, I went. Just to say hello. From the looks of it, it might take some time. They seemed unable to deal with the monsters in the surrounding area.”
“What? Please teach them how to deal with monsters!”
“Sasha should be able to do that. Isn’t she going?”
Soldiers aren’t supposed to be educators in the demonic land.
“I’ll go.”
“Please do.”
In the end, Jennifer was entrusted with the task.
Chel, Hel, and Sylvia decided to head for the East Coast.
“I’ll take some of the dungeon dwellers with me.”
“Are you going, too, Katan?”
Hel invited the dwarves.
Katan and Kahiman seemed undecided.
“You’ll be able to see the sea!”
“I want to see it!”
“Okay, let’s go.”
It seems that the five of them are going to the East Coast.
“We’ll transport the Guardian Spiders.”
“Understood.”
Lipa and I are heading to the desert for repairs.
No one is home. We don’t need to take anything with us, so we could just leave. However, we want to practice defending the demonic land for the future.
There are also some medicinal herbs drying in the back warehouse. It would be a hassle to go back and get them, so Hel set up a magic circle. It looks like the one we saw in the Sealing Clan’s dungeon.
Everyone asks Hel how to remove it, and then we set off.
“Tell the elf guards, too. Tell them not to go near the house while we’re away.”
“Got it.”
We head east with Chel and the others, splitting up at the botanical garden dungeon in the center. As usual, flying monsters are practicing their “migration” in the Midgard ruins, making a lot of noise; however, since we fought the griffins this morning, they seem on guard.
We took the broken Guardian Spider out of the dungeon, and Lipa pulled it up into the sky. We confirmed that the Guardian Spider had left the ground. I lifted it from below.
“I’ll match your speed, so fly freely. Be careful of the cliffs, since the spider will weigh you down.”
“Got it.”
Since there are no women around and it’s just me and Lipa, I feel more relaxed.
Some monsters attack us, but I can fend them off by kicking. It was difficult to keep my upper body steady while using my hip joints to kick.
“I wish we had a carriage in this demonic land.”
I consulted with Lipa during a break.
“It would make transporting things easier. Would it be better to build a waterway and transport things by boat?”
“Even if we build a waterway, the monsters that live in the water will probably come anyway. Can we buy a flying ship from Cliff Garuda?”
Cliff Garuda is a nation of bird people in the south of the demonic land, and it is Lipa’s homeland. Lipa was exiled from the country, but he knows more than I do.
“But wouldn’t Cliff Garuda’s flying ships become prey for the monsters?”
“It’s possible. Even if we modify them, there are limits to what we can do. It would be faster to use wyverns. If only we could borrow the dragon sleeping in the genetic research institute’s dungeon…”
“But if they find out, the elves will launch a full-scale invasion, according to Hel-san…”
“Ugh, this is such a hassle.”
We reached the desert by mid-morning. I thought it would be hot, but there were more clouds than expected, so it wasn’t too bad. However, clouds mean there’s a chance of rain.
Raindrops that aren’t absorbed by the sand gather and turn into muddy torrents that flow across the desert.
“Be careful of flash floods. I’ve heard stories of people drowning while sleeping in the desert.”
“Yes.”
Lipa was drinking purple soup. It was supposed to restore magic power.
“Are you okay with not replenishing your magic power, Makyo-san?”
“I don’t use it.”
“Oh, right.”
Lipa looked at the flying broom and said,
“If the flying broom is too difficult, should we carry it and run together?”
“Is that okay?”
“Sure, whatever’s easier for you.”
Lipa believed that everything was training. He just had to consider his physical strength and magical power, and then act accordingly.
As we ran through the desert, carrying heavy loads, we came across hard ground. It might have been where a river had flowed after it rained. It was good for running, but we were afraid of muddy water, so we tried to stick to the softer sand.
Along the way, we came across a cluster of small succulent plants that looked like pebbles. I had never seen anything like them in the desert before, but they reminded me of the rocky areas in the north.
“Maybe they bloom when it rains,”
“Let’s collect some and have them tested later.”
We put them in a leather bag and continued on our way.
In the evening, we arrived at a military base dungeon.
We told the golem at the entrance that the Guardian Spider had been attacked by monsters and couldn’t be repaired. It responded immediately.
“Can you fix it?”
“That’s what this base is for. No one has trained longer than us in repairing magical machines.”
For the golems of this base, technology seems to be their identity. Perhaps acquiring technology is what keeps them from losing themselves.
Saketsu, a dwarf, is searching through old documents with the golems to learn their technology.
“Unlike other magical machines, it seems that the golem technicians deliberately chose not to leave their technology behind for future generations. It feels like a philosophy or a will.”
“It’s probably because many of them struggled with their former selves while they were alive.”
Ka-Ryu, who had been listening, said in a calm voice. Her words carried weight because they were based on her own experience.
“Speaking of which, has it rained in the desert recently?”
“No, I haven’t seen any rain. But according to the calendar, it’s already autumn. A long rain will come eventually.”
I see. It’s already autumn.
“Shall we stay the night?”
“Yeah, only the two of us are home.”
We hunted a spiky lizard monster outside and ate it for dinner.
Since the desert night was cold, we borrowed a room deep in the dungeon to sleep in.
For some reason, not only Ka-Ryu but also the golems gathered around me. Maybe it’s my magic power.
I’ve let go of both my magic power and my consciousness.
