Chapter 218 – The Vampire and Elf Cleanup Part 4

I woke up in the middle of the night. After saying goodbye to Fenrir, I headed toward the mountains, where bandits were said to lurk.

Two large houses that hadn’t been there before now stood deep within the mountains. The light from the magic stone lamps was clearly visible in the darkness.

Hoo-hoo.

I commanded the owl to circle the large house.

Then, I commanded the nearby boars, deer, wolves, and other animals to gradually surround the house. Then, four wild bears emerged, grown large for nesting. One mandragora was uprooted with its soil.

Snap. Crack.

The wild bears began snapping the thin trees around them.

Despite the beasts’ strong scent and noise, the people inside the house remained unaware.

“They might be nothing special.”

As I waited, an adventurer-like man descended from the mountaintop, following a game trail. He carried a pickaxe, suggesting that a mine was nearby.

“What the hell is this!?”

Seeing the beasts surrounding him, the man flinched.

I pulled the mandragora out of the soil and tossed it through the open window into the house.

Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

A familiar voice echoed through the mountains.

The only one who came out, clutching his ears and staggering, was the magician. I might have seen him before somewhere, but I’ve forgotten. I forget people I don’t care about anyway.

“Damn it! Fireball!”

A fireball flew toward the wolf, and I instinctively caught it. From watching Makyo, I vaguely knew what I could do by wrapping magic around my hand, but actually doing it myself… was it this easy?

I crushed the fireball in my hand and looked at the magician. He was already sitting on his butt. Wild Bear charged into the house, stepping on the magician.

The adventurer-looking man was bitten by a wolf and passed out from shock. The wolf that bit him looked confused.

“Ignore him. Let’s smash the other house.”

I told the wolf, and I smashed the other door with a pickaxe.

After that, animals and monsters swarmed in, wreaking havoc. I had ordered them not to kill, only to break bones, and they strictly obeyed.

There was plenty of food, and both the animals and the Wild Bear looked happy. That was the main thing.

“I can’t be bothered to tie you up. But are you trying to raid the demonic land again?”

I woke the magician who had been trampled by the wild bear and asked him.

“…Ahh.”

It seems his ribs are broken; he can’t speak.

“Nod or shake your head to answer. Got it?”

The magician nodded.

“Are you trying to form a mercenary guild?”

He shook his head.

“Have you invaded the demonic land?”

He nodded. Remnants, as expected.

“Do you intend to enter the demonic land again?”

The magician didn’t answer.

“You’re free to come to the demonic land if you wish, but you’ll die quickly. Monsters will kill you. You won’t reach the underworld. The lord of the demonic land will make you work in the southwest village forever, even after death. Understand?”

The magician nodded.

“The demonic land’s lord tolerates no ghosts or the undead. Cursing after death is pointless. He’s the sort who breaks even demonic curses. Got it?”

“…Got it. Ah!”

The magician desperately opened his mouth.

“You should train a bit more. You might have trauma, but if you faint from a wolf bite, you’ll die before you can even enter the demonic land. That’s all.”

Hoo-hoo.

I released the animals and monsters, then sprinted away.

“Even bandits of that caliber used to be threatening. Is the trading village okay?”

I returned directly to the castle town of East Kenya and reported to Marchia and Fazal. “You should build up some military strength. This isn’t just about entering the demonic land,” I told them.

At dawn, I chased after the carriage that had already departed for the demonic land’s trading village.

We quickly caught up to the wagon, but it seemed to be struggling on the rough road. I lifted the cargo platform and went ahead to clear the path of obstacles. I tossed fallen trees and monsters off the cliffside to clear the way.

Knock, knock, knock.

The sound of something striking wood reached my ears.

As I approached, I saw a female soldier felling a tree.

“Hello!”

When I called out, she immediately turned around and began watching me warily.

“Who are you? What brings you to this remote area?”

“Ah, um, I’m a special envoy to the demonic land.”

I had been fine until then, but for some reason, I felt tense. Maybe it was because I sensed some kind of pressure from her, a woman known for her skill with makeup.

“The demonic land!? So that means…”

“I’m Sylvia from East Kenya. Is the trading village close by?”

“Yes, it’s right over there.”

“If you’d like, I could help trim the branches and carry them with you.”

“Huh?”

I must have confused her.

Explaining everything was starting to feel like a hassle, so I borrowed an axe, chopped down a tree, and trimmed the branches.

“Y-y-you work fast.”

“Well, I’m from the demonic land, so this is nothing. Could you guide me to the village?”

“Right away! This way!”

The village was a short climb up a slope. For some reason, there were a lot of women there. The carpenters building houses, the shopkeepers selling food at stalls, and the soldiers training at the fort were all women.

“Oh, there are a lot of women here?”

“Well, yes. The prostitutes have the lord’s official endorsement, so they run various side businesses.”

I’d noticed that many of them were quite beautiful and clearly took care of their appearance.

“You’re from the demonic land!?”

Sasha, a soldier from the training facility, called out. I’d seen her several times when trainees came from the demonic land.

“Ah, hello.”

We only exchanged greetings, but apparently, she’s a high-ranking soldier in the trading village.

As I placed the cut logs with the gathered timber, the female carpenters called out to me.

“Are you really from the demonic land?”

“Yes. Could it be that Makyo has been causing trouble?”

“Taro-chan hasn’t come, you know. In this village, we call the lord of the demonic land ‘Lazy Taro.’ We’re old acquaintances, you see.”

I couldn’t help but laugh at the idea that Makyo, who worked three times harder than anyone else, was called “Lazy Taro.”

“I’m so sorry for all the trouble Makyo must be causing you.”

“Oh, no, no, it’s us who should be apologizing. Back when we were practically living at Taro-chan’s house, he was a man who hardly did anything at all.”

“W-were you practically living there?”

“Ah, we were town prostitutes, and Taro-chan was a regular customer. He seemed so straightforward, like he couldn’t even tell a lie. So, when we took time off work, we’d hang out at his place.”

I thought I understood why women gathered around Makyo.

“He just knew all kinds of weird things.”

“He still does. That’s why he’s called an eccentric. When he was spending time with you, he wasn’t working?”

“No, he worked as an adventurer sometimes. He probably got requests for things like gathering herbs or finding lost items.”

It seems he had that keen eye for observation even back then.

“But he never worked on rainy days, right?”

“Yeah, he’d sleep through anything, even if you slapped his butt. You’d have to drag him out of bed to make a toy for you. Is he still like that?”

“No, now on rainy days he flies through the sky, boards a giant magical beast, and builds magic reservoirs in iron mines. He works an insane amount.”

“”Huh!?””

“What are you talking about?”

“I can’t even imagine it.”

“Watching him, I’ve started to doubt that he’s human anymore, so I’ve decided to call him eccentric.”

As we talked about Makyo, more and more prostitutes and people doing other jobs gathered around us. Everyone seemed confused by Makyo’s change.

“He comes by sometimes, quickly digs a hole, or hunts monsters. I was wondering what he was up to.”

“Hmm, are you here for village management? Fruit and other supplies will arrive from East Kenya later, but is there anything you need?”

“Do the necessary supplies arrive properly?”

“We get quite a bit of support from the military, too.”

The prostitutes moved to the table and chairs in front of the stall, surrounded me, and started drinking.

“No customers anyway, so it’s fine. Taro-chan’s tab works.”

“Hey, more importantly, won’t you tell us about life in the demonic land?”

“That’s something we’d like to know, too!”

“We’d love to hear about it.”

Female soldiers and even a man from the Merchant Guild—a rare occurrence in this village—brought chairs and joined the circle, completely surrounding me.

“Well, where should I start? Dwarves came from the Elven Kingdom, too. We all have different jobs, so there are things I don’t know. For example, we’re currently transporting magic stones to the Meiju Kingdom, and we use dragons to airlift them to the port.”

“Sorry. There are a couple more things I don’t understand!”

“Ah, the Meiju Kingdom. That’s a country of the demon race, but…”

“Demon race? Isn’t that an enemy nation!?”

“No, diplomatic relations have normalized in the demonic land. We’ve even started proper trade with the dungeon folk.”

“The dungeon folk?”

“The descendants of Yggdrasil survivors who were infected with the Beast Demon Disease have been found.”

Since Makyo hadn’t taught them anything, I spent the whole day answering the villagers’ questions.

I knew it would be difficult to explain things that had taken me months to learn, but Makyo really hadn’t taught them anything. Some people didn’t even know about Cliff Garuda, and they only had a vague idea of Makyo’s strength.

“Lately, that guy’s been able to fly, you know.”

“Did he find some kind of magic tool?”

The female soldier asked.

“No. He said he just interferes with buoyancy without holding anything. It makes no sense, right?”

“It doesn’t make sense.”

“Right! But I thought maybe I was the weird one since even demons in the demonic land can fly after practicing. Ah, I’m relieved.”

“But cutting down a tree with one hand is pretty weird, too.”

The female soldier who had been cutting wood earlier said.

“That’s something you learn to do if you live in the demonic land.”

I gradually began to notice that I was becoming more talkative. Maybe with the help of alcohol, I wouldn’t be so nervous.

“But…”

“If you link your magic power to your movements, you can unleash surprising power. All right, let’s try it. Have you ever sparred before?”

After that, the entire village, including the prostitutes, began training.

“Don’t try to convey anything. First, let’s see if you can sense your magic power.”

Before I knew it, I was interacting with people as if I were giving orders to monsters.
