Chapter 64 – Promotional Test Part 1

I woke up earlier than usual on the day for the promotional request. First I needed to join with the other candidates in the adventurer’s guild. I finished making preparations.

Six Stamina Enhancement, six Body Strengthening, and six Agility Enhancement. That was the total sum of clothes, knives, and swords I was wearing.

If I put on all of this together, I wouldn’t have any problems unless something came up completely out of the blue. It would also stand out if I wore a lot of accessories, so I only put on one necklace and bracelet.

I can only attach one skill on them, but oh well; I think it will be enough.

I didn’t plan to use offensive skills this time, so I only brought skills that could increase my basic attributes. As you’d expect, with this kind of equipment, I felt lighter the moment I put them on.

However… there was one thing I needed to be careful about. The quickness of my movements after I put on all those skills was completely different from what I was used to. It’s necessary to be conscious of differences like that when you’re fighting monsters.

Well, I figured it wouldn’t be a problem since I’d already had some experience with this level of enhancement.

“Okay, Val, I’m going now.”

I stroked Val’s head once. He looked lonely.

Val.”

His voice was also somewhat sad. There’s nothing I can do about it; I’m not allowed to bring him with me for this.

I left my room and headed for the back door. Ristina-san was in the back room, holding a broom, so she must have just finished cleaning.

“Good morning, Ristina-san.”

“Good morning, Relius-senpai. Today’s your promotional request, isn’t it?”

“That’s right.”

“Good luck, then.”

I was surprised to see her like this.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, it’s just… usually you’d have poked some fun at me by now.”

“Oh? What, did you want me to tease you, senpai?”

Ristina-san came closer, her eyes devilishly narrow as she poked my arm with the broom handle.

“No, you were earnestly cheering me on, so… that just seemed unusual.”

“Aww, you’re so mean. I can be polite too! Oh yeah, here’s your bento! Even though it’s just some bread and normal food!”

“Oh, thanks. I really appreciate it.”

Ristina-san shoved it at me and went back into the storage area while waving. Her cheeks were slightly red.

Guess she’s not used to cheering me on. I mean, is it okay for her to be like that while she’s cleaning? Eh, there wasn’t that much trash, so it’s probably fine.

I put the bento in the small bag I was carrying. I prepared a bag to conceal my abilities, since I can’t just openly take my stuff out of the item box in full view of everyone. So far, the bento is the only thing I’ve actually got in there.

…yeah, it’s not possible to dismantle and recover a bento.

When I arrived at the guild, I met the other four promotional candidates at the reception desk; they got there before I did.

“Nice to meet you, my name is Relius.”

Really, they’re so early. I showed up 30 minutes earlier than scheduled, and I was still the last one here.

“Oh, regards. I’m Warrior.” (T/N: I don’t know if it’s his real name, there’s no other explanation for it.)

A guy carrying an axe on his back casually waved one hand as he greeted me. He seemed to have a very strong Divine Treasure, a weapon called Break Axe with five offensive skills and three body enhancement skills. It appeared to be the type of weapon that specializes in brute force.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Thief.” (T/N: This, too.)

He was a man with a refreshing smile, and had a kind of knife with him, a weapon called Six Dagger. This one was actually rather modest – it had three body enhancement type skills, all of them being Agility Enhancement. With that, he might be a speed-oriented fighter.

So, I roughly understand the capabilities of these two vanguards. The other two are women. Were they the pair the receptionist told me about when I asked her before? (T/N: There’s an error in the chapter 62. Apparently, the participant is five people including Relius, I’ve fixed it already.)

“I’m Rashin. Nice to meet you.”

“I-I’m Chiyu! N-nice to m-m-meet you!”

One of them looked dignified, the other was acting very nervous. Rashin’s weapon was a spear, and Chiyu’s was a staff. Rashin also had vanguard skills, but Chiyu seemed better suited to the rear guard. If she had purification magic, the church might have recruited her.

“Now then, all the members are here, so please decide on the leader.”

Warrior-san raised his hand as soon as she said that. “Me! Let me be the leader!”

Everyone else looked at each other.

“I don’t mind,” said Rashin-san. Following up, Chiyu-san nodded her head almost frantically. “M-me too… I have the same opinion as Rashin-chan.”

“I don’t mind, either. Being the leader seems troublesome anyway.”

“I’m fine with that, too.”

It was unanimous, and Warrior-san pumped his fist enthusiastically. He went back to normal when he noticed everyone staring at him.

Well, at least for now, there don’t seem to be any bad actors in this party.

“Alright then, here is the request form. Please manage it, Warrior-san.”

The receptionist gave him a piece of paper. With that, our promotional request was officially accepted.

“Please do your best to fulfill this request. If it seems impossible, please return immediately. Your lives are the highest priority.”

The receptionist entreated us to remember that, then went back to her usual duties.

Warrior-san spoke up, “Okay, let’s go outside right now. Is everyone good?”

Rashin-san nodded. “Yeah. I don’t mind. Let’s go then.”

Rashin-san and Chiyu-san followed behind Warrior-san. Behind them, Thief-san walked next to me.

“Relius-san is quite a good fighter, isn’t he?”

“Huh? Why do you say that?”

“Didn’t you protect a lady adventurer back then? You know, that one time in the guild, remember?”

“Ahh…”

Did he mean that one time with Mear-san? There was also the time I protected Ristina-san, but if it happened in the guild, it was Mear-san.

“Ah, that one. Well, I think I’m just good at moving my body.”

“Really, now? By the way, loosen up, you don’t have to be so stiff when you’re talking to me, you know?”

“Oh, right. Since I was little, I’ve always been working in my home to serve people, so it’s pretty much a habit.”

“Oh, I see. Where did you work, anyway?”

“Migratory Bird Inn.”

“Oh, that one! That inn’s been pretty famous lately!”

“It has. Thanks to that, we’ve been getting a lot of customers these days.”

We talked light-heartedly. Rashin-san, who was listening to us, interrupted. “Hey! Migratory Bird Inn is a place you can work part-time while living in, isn’t it!? If you’re ever recruiting, please let us know! Right, Chiyu?”

“Huh? What!? I-I can’t serve people, it’s impossible for me!”

“Is it? Well that’s no good, you gotta start somewhere, right? With it being a part-time job, it’s a good opportunity to overcome something about yourself that you don’t like – such as your problems interacting with people.

Well, it’s our first meeting. It’s important to get to know each other before we start fighting monsters. Especially Chiyu-san; she’s a girl who has trouble talking to people. That in particular is something she should be consciously trying to overcome.
