Chapter 10 – Treasure Room

As I continued to explore the Duke’s castle, worrying about Pent, who was swimming leisurely through the castle, I received a radio message from Egg No. 3, saying that they had found a door to what appeared to be a treasure room.

“This is Egg No. 1, Wataru. Marina-san. Can you open this door?”

“This is Egg No. 3, Marina. This type of door can only be opened by putting registered magic power into the door in addition to the key.”

Registered magic power sounds like a system similar to fingerprint authentication. And registered magic power means that… you can only open it with a time machine.

“In a case like this, do we just have to give up?”

“We can’t open the door, but if we break through the wall, we can get in.”

That’s a hell of a feat, isn’t it? Well, we have a lot of people who can put a sword through a stone wall, so it’s not that difficult. Smashing the ruins is… too late; we’ve already smashed it too many times.

“Well, let’s destroy it.”

“Wait a minute. The door to the treasure room is protected by magic, and the treasure room itself is probably solid, so there might not be any seawater in the treasure room. It would be a waste if the treasure is destroyed by the force of the seawater flowing into it.”

I see. I understand what Marina-san meant. I also agree that there is a high possibility of that happening, but I don’t know what to do about it.

“What should we do?”

If you don’t know something, it’s best to ask honestly. Acting like a know-it-all will only embarrass you.

“We acted on the assumption that there was no water in it. Can Wataru-san’s Ship Summoning prevent seawater from entering the treasure room?”

Hmm, if the barrier of the Ship Summoning can be drawn perfectly to the wall, it can prevent seawater from entering. However, the stone wall itself is uneven, and it would be impossible to completely eliminate the gap. Then there’s the pressure of the water, so it would be impossible to prevent water from getting in.

“I don’t think it’s possible.”

“Then we’ll make the smallest hole possible and let the water slowly fill the treasure room. After that, it would be safe to break through the wall and enter. Even so, be prepared for the treasures to be damaged by the seawater getting in.”

Hmm. I would like to get the treasures in a clean state anyway, but it seems to be difficult.

Huh? No, I can do it. I can summon a rubber boat and give the stone wall permission to board. Then, the barrier will be perfectly integrated with the stone wall, so even if we make a hole, seawater won’t get in. The question is whether it is possible to overturn the rubber boat underwater.

I radioed for everyone’s permission and summoned the rubber boats to give it a try.

…The power of a single boat, Egg No. 1, was not enough, but if two boats cooperated, it was relatively easy to overturn the rubber boats.

However, there was a miscalculation. When I gave permission to the stone wall to board the boat, the ceiling was recognized as a stone wall, and the rubber boat that had overturned to support the barrier returned to normal with a bang.

The ceiling and the stone wall… the materials are the same, but I wanted them to be recognized separately. The air inside Egg No. 1 as it returns to normal is… hell.

“This is Egg No. 1, Wataru. I couldn’t make it, sorry.”

My heart was broken, so I surrendered completely and apologized sincerely.

“This is Egg No. 2, Alessia. Wataru-san, it’s okay. I understood what you wanted to do, and I’m sure it wasn’t wrong, so don’t be so depressed.”

Alessia-san follows up quickly. As you would expect from the leader of Girasole, she is also very kind.

“This is Egg No. 3, Dorothea. If it’s going to go back to the way it was, I think it’s okay if we fix it so it doesn’t go back to the way it was.”

This time, Dorothea-san, the subleader who supports Girasole from the shadows, offered a constructive opinion. After all this time, they have become a great group of A-rank adventurers because they have a solid leader and subleader.

Thanks to them, I’m a little more motivated. To fix the rubber boat… all we have to do is stick two swords into the stone walls on either side and tie them together with a rope so that the boat is vertical. It is surprisingly easy.

It took some time to adjust the length of the rope, but we were able to fix the boat vertically. After that, we can move freely inside the rubber boat’s barrier once permission to board is given, and the Egg’s hatch is inserted into the rubber boat’s barrier from below.

“This is Egg No. 1, Wataru. We are ready. Marina-san, please take care of this for me.”

“This is Egg No. 3, Marina. I used my sword to tie the rope, so Egg No. 3 doesn’t have a sword.”

That’s what I thought. I used Ines’ sword, so I don’t have a sword either.

“This is Egg No. 2, Alessia. It’s my turn.”

I hear Alessia-san’s voice over the radio. It is true that Alessia-san is the only one with a sword left.

“Um, this is Egg No. 1, Wataru. Marina-san, do you have any precautions other than slashing with the sword?”

I’m very worried that Marina-san, who has the main job, won’t be able to do it.

“This is Egg No. 3, Marina. After cutting the stone wall with the sword, there should be a change. If there is air, I want to check if we can breathe and if there are any traps.”

Come to think of it, I don’t know if we can breathe even if there is air. If there’s seawater in the treasure room, all the hard work we’ve done will have been for nothing, but safety comes first.

“Alessia-san. Please do that.”

“Roger that!”

Egg No. 2 has come under the rubber boat. I guess Alessia-san is going to cut the stone wall now, but I can’t see her from here because the rubber boat is in the way. It’s a pity that I can’t see the scene because it would be like a hot scene in Lupin the Third with Goemon in action.

“This is Egg No. 2, Alessia. I cut through the wall. There’s air inside, just as Marina predicted. I’ll take over now.”

“No, Alessia-san. What about the treasure?”

The air is important, but our original purpose is the treasure, so please tell me.

“Hmm… you’d better see for yourself.”

Her voice sounds disappointed, but does that mean there was no treasure?

“…Shiny…”

Ah, I received Rimu’s intention. Shiny means there’s probably treasure inside. I guess Alessia-san wanted me to be impatient, and Rimu spoiled the whole thing for me. I’m a little sorry.

“Is there no treasure inside?”

“I wonder if that’s true.”

Oh, it seems that Alessia-san’s acting is working for Ines and Felicia. Can we leave the fresh reactions to them?

“I think so. Well, let’s not expect too much.”

After providing some backup for Alessia-san, Egg No. 2 and No. 3 switch places, and I watch as Marina-san begins to investigate the inside of the treasure room. Hmm, I can’t wait to see inside, too. It’s pretty exciting.

Come to think of it, I haven’t seen Pent; how is he?

“Hey, do you know where Pent is?”

“If it’s Pent, he seems to be sleeping in the corner of the passage.”

Felicia, who has good night vision, tells me where Pent is. He seems to have fallen asleep where the light can’t reach him. It can’t be helped that he’s just been born, but I’ll be careful not to forget him and leave him behind.

“This is Egg No. 3, Marina. Breathing and traps are fine.”

While I was talking to Ines and Felicia, Marina-san’s investigation seems to have been completed. That took quite a while.

“This is Egg No. 1, Wataru. Roger. Then please enter the treasure room in the order of Egg No. 3 and Egg No. 2. If there is no response on the confirmation radio, I will repatriate the Egg.”

“Egg No. 3. Copy that.”

“Egg No. 2. Roger that.”

The Egg No. 3 and the Egg No. 2 entered the treasure room in turn, and the repatriation was completed. Now it’s our turn. I’m curious to see Ines’ and Felicia’s reactions.

With Egg No. 1, I get under the rubber boat, stand up, and look into the treasure room.

“…..”

“Master. What’s wrong?”

“No, nothing. Ines and Felicia should also take a look.”

While I was frozen at the sight, I heard Ines’ voice from below. Phew. I knew the treasure was there because Rimu had told me, but I still froze in surprise. I managed to make a sound of disappointment and went back into the Egg No. 1. I forced my grin to fade, but they didn’t know, did they?

Ines stood up with a curious expression on her face. Oh damn, I love to see Ines’ rich maternal symbolism, but it’s so big that I can’t see her surprised face from below.

“Hey, that’s amazing!”

I could see Ines’ face as she hurriedly turned to me. As expected, her reaction was one of surprise. Yes, I wanted to see that expression. I was about to be interrupted by the mother symbol, but it turned out to be a good thing.

“Master. You tricked me.”

“No, Alessia-san tried to trick me, so I just went along with it.”

I just read the mood. It was never my fault.

“Are you saying there was treasure there after all?”

Felicia, who hasn’t seen it yet, asks curiously. Ines made a fuss first, so she probably has a pretty good idea of what to expect, but I urge her to see for herself.

“…It was somehow an unreal sight.”

Felicia, looking into the treasure room, looks a little unsure of what to do.

I know, right? It’s like a dream, isn’t it?

When I looked into the vault, Alessia-san, and the others were illuminating the inside of the vault with their daily life magic Light.

I had an image of the treasury as a room of about ten tatami mats stacked with gold, silver, and treasures, but I guess my image was poor, and it was probably more like 30 tatami mats… or more?

I am not sure of the size of the treasure room, but there were shelves along the wall, and gold and silver treasures were lined up in rows. And perhaps the most expensive items were displayed on a stand, like in a museum.

The shine of the treasures, even though they must have been sleeping in the treasure room for a long time, suggested that the treasures, or the treasure room itself, might have a function of protecting the items. But, Rimu. Please don’t let all these sights end with just a glimmer. I was surprised, even though I knew what it was.

“Nobility is amazing.”

“…Ordinary nobles don’t have such treasures. Maybe this Duke’s family was quite evil.”

Ines says terrible things, but when I see that much treasure being hoarded, I can’t deny it. I’ve heard that they’ve prospered through trade, but it’s at the level of smuggling or dealing in forbidden goods. They are definitely doing something bad.

  1. How will they divide that treasure? And from the POW of that god of commerce, if that gold were spent on buying ships, would that count as being removed from circulation? It was already removed in the first place, I assume.
