Chapter 8 – It’s Born
After eliminating all but the Sea Serpent’s egg in the audience hall, I summoned the Hideaway and was about to take a break when the egg I had secured began to shake with a thumping and rattling sound, though I don’t know if it was meant to hatch or be wildly excited.
“Oh, the egg just fell over.”
I had placed the egg upright on a support, but the violent vibrations caused it to fall over. Moreover, perhaps angered by the shock, the shaking of the egg and the sound it made became more and more violent.
“Master. It looks like there is a crack in the egg…”
“Yes. It looks like that to me, too.”
The eggshell, which looks quite hard, has a thin line on it.
“Alessia-san. It’s definitely going to be born. What shall we do with it?”
And unlike a normal hatching, it feels violently moved and angry. It’s like an incubation of anger?
“You’re right…it’s not often that we get to see the moment a monster is born, so shouldn’t we just watch it until it’s born? Of course, I’ll take care of it once it’s born.”
At first, Alessia-san seemed confused, but after thinking about it for a moment, she seemed to calm down and suggested that we continue with the observation. She was definitely putting her curiosity first. Well, as long as she cleans it up afterward, I don’t have a problem with it, right?
“I understand. Oh, Rimu. Don’t get too close, it’s dangerous.”
Curious about the moving egg, Rimu approached it closely.
“I want to see.”
When I hurriedly hugged Rimu, he expressed a bit of dissatisfaction.
“Wataru-san. Rimu is a level 300 Slime. With a newborn Sea Serpent, there’s nothing dangerous about what he does.”
Dorothea-san gave me the correct answer with a gentle smile. Although it is a gentle smile, I feel that she is telling me not to be too overprotective.
“B-but Rimu is tiny, so…”
The baby Sea Serpent is probably quite big. It would be unfashionable if he were to be eaten right away.
“Wataru-san. Rimu-chan can usually defeat an adult Sea Serpent. Besides, both Fuu-chan and Beni-chan are nearby. It’s a pity that only Rimu-chan can’t get close to it.”
Just as Dorothea-san said, I noticed that Fuu-chan and Beni-chan were standing near the egg.
“Whew. Rimu. You can approach it, but be very careful because you never know what might happen.”
“Yeah.”
When I released him from my arms, Rimu happily accelerated and approached the egg. I used to be with him all the time, so I’m a little sad… No, Rimu has been quite free since we met. I want to spoil him even more.
“Hey, Wataru-san. Is it okay if the egg isn’t in the water?”
Remembering how Rimu was when we first met, Carla-san’s simple question brought me back to reality. Why is she asking me such a difficult question?
“Well, come to think of it, the Sea Serpent’s eggs were in the water. Of course, they would be born in water, right? Huh? But Sea Serpents don’t mind showing their faces on the surface, and they behave just fine… Wataru-san. What do you think?”
Alessia-san, I don’t want you to ask me as well.
“The ecology of monsters. I don’t know anything about it, let alone what happens when it hatches.”
“Well, you’re right. Hmm… I’ll take care of it, but it might be a bit cruel.”
It would be cruel if it suffocated as soon as it was born or something like that. Maybe the egg being out of control is an appeal to put it back in the water. But since it would be defeated anyway, putting it back in the water is not the same thing. It’s a subtle complication.
When I looked at the egg, a baby Sea Serpent broke through the egg and came out with a cracking sound. It seemed to have been born before I had time to worry about it.
“Shaaa!”
“Rimu!”
…Ah, yes. Dorothea-san was right, I was overprotective.
“Um, Rimu. Are you okay?”
I know he’s 100 percent okay, but he might be surprised, and I’m not being overprotective with this concern, am I?
“Yes.”
I received Rimu’s slightly satisfied intention. I don’t know, but he seemed to enjoy it.
Phew, that was a little hasty. The baby Sea Serpent that had broken through the eggshell looked around, made a threatening noise, and suddenly attacked Rimu.
Rimu dodged the attack by jumping up and down with a plop. With a flash, he transformed into his angel form in midair. Rimu unleashed a series of body blows, crushing the Sea Serpent that had attacked him. It is an instantaneous, quick action.
However, it seems to have been able to see from the moment it was born, and the fighting instinct of monsters seems to have been built into its DNA, as it attacked Rimu right away.
“Uh, Alessia-san. Please.”
The baby Sea Serpent stretched out on the deck. It would have been better to send it to the afterlife as an egg. Even if we are dealing with monsters, it is also important to think about putting our curiosity aside.
“…Yeah, sure.”
Alessia-san also did not feel good about putting her curiosity first, and she awkwardly drew her sword and approached the baby Sea Serpent.
“Rimu-chan?”
Rimu, who had been jumping contentedly next to the baby Sea Serpent, reacted to Alessia-san’s approach and climbed onto the baby Sea Serpent’s head. Alessia-san looked at me with a troubled expression.
“Rimu. What’s wrong?”
I asked Rimu about his strange behavior and the reason for it.
“Little brother…”
“Huh? Brother? …Little brother?”
What? What does that mean?
“Rimu’s little brother.”
“Are you saying that the baby Sea Serpent is Rimu’s little brother?”
“Yes.”
No, no, no, they are different species. Rimu is a Slime, and Sea Serpent is a Sea Serpent. Before that, is the baby a male? No, male or female is not important.
“You see, Rimu. As you can see from the attack, the Sea Serpent can’t be Rimu’s little brother because it’s dangerous.”
“It’s okay.”
There’s not a single thing that’s okay, you know?
“Wataru-san. I think Rimu-chan wants you to tame it.”
Marina-san, who overheard the conversation, said something ominous. Tame? Me, the baby Sea Serpent?
“Rimu. Is that true?”
Please tell me it’s not.
“Yes.”
I look at the Sea Serpent stretched out under Rimu. It is smaller than the baby Sea Serpent swimming in the audience hall. But it is definitely larger than the blue general I saw in Japan. [T/n: Japanese rat snake].
It’s not that I hate reptiles, but I don’t like them either. …I don’t think I could ever love this child.
“Rimu. You know, Sea Serpents can grow very large. It’s impossible to tame them.”
“…..”
Rimu sends me a huge wave of sadness.
“Why do you want a baby Sea Serpent to be your little brother?”
“…He’s cute.”
He doesn’t look cute to me.
“If you want a little brother, let’s tame a Slime next time.”
I don’t mind taming many Slimes. Let’s make a big family.
“…..”
Please don’t keep silent and send me waves of sadness. Is this how a mother feels when her child picks up a puppy or kitten?
“Wataru-san. If it’s a Sea Serpent, you can use it as a ship’s escort… Well, Wataru-san’s ship doesn’t need an escort, I guess.”
I’ve been keeping to myself, but it looks like Dorothea-san is trying to cover for Rimu. If anything, I think she got carried away by Rimu’s wave of grief.
“No one is allowed to enter the ship without permission, so there is no need for an escort.”
“Master. You can tame it, can’t you? Let it swim around the ship; it’ll grow on its own. Besides, it might be useful for something.”
Now Ines. Ines can’t possibly sense Rimu’s intentions, so what is this all about?
“Useful?”
“I don’t know. But Master can’t do anything to make Rimu sad, can you? It’s useless to resist, so why don’t you just give up?”
Ines said something absurd. It’s true that the thought of making Rimu sad is painful as if I’m being cut to pieces, but keeping a living creature is a responsibility. I’m very strict about it.
“Rimu… If the baby Sea Serpent doesn’t accept the tame, you should give it up.”
“I understand…”
I tried to be tough, but I couldn’t say no. The half-smiles of Ines and Alessia-san and the others pierced my heart.
But there is still a chance. It had just been born and suddenly beaten to a pulp. It would not want to follow us. But I am a little worried that its heart might be broken because it was beaten right after it was born.
“Um, Claretta-san. Can you heal monsters with healing magic?”
Anyway, I hope it gets better and does its best to refuse to sign the contract.
“…I’ve never used healing magic on a monster, so I’m not sure, but I’ve heard stories of tamed monsters being healed, so I don’t think it’s something that can’t be done.”
Claretta-san looks a bit unsure. Well, without a companion with taming skills, there is no way to cast healing magic on a monster.
“Then please do it.”
“I understand.”
Claretta-san, looking a little nervous, took out her staff and began to draw a magic circle. What was that? I don’t think I’ve ever seen healing magic before. The only time I was injured at all was when I was hit by a Horned Rabbit when I arrived in this world? I must have been protected by the Ship Summoning.
When I realized how blessed I was, a magic circle was drawn, and a soft light fell on the baby Sea Serpent from the magic circle.
The swelling and cuts caused by Rimu’s blows began to heal. Attack magic is cool, but healing magic is amazing. Knowing that it takes time for cuts and other injuries to heal, I directly felt the power of healing magic.
“It was able to heal properly. It seems there is no difference in the effect of healing even on monsters.”
Claretta-san smiles, a bit relieved. It’s a stupid fantasy, but if Claretta-san were a health teacher, I think I would go to the infirmary every day and hurt myself. Whoa, the baby Sea Serpent is on the move.
“Shaa!”
As soon as it recognized us, it began to threaten us with all its might. It seems it has not lost its heart. I hope it will continue to resist Tame with all its might.

I have seen here the degree of being a pushover previously thought to be impossible. He can’t refuse even his own pet about a potentially troublesome matter. What is an expression that is worse than a doormat? Could anyone help me here? Don’t say Wataru is the word, that’s not I’m asking for.
