Chapter 18 – True Story

After securing additional funds, we walked around the port city of Toyen and observed some of the cultures of the area. Then we bought two picture books to learn the written and spoken language. I also originally wanted a history book, but it was… expensive…

Poor kobolds.

Once upon a time, there was a very peaceful kobold village.

The kobolds lived happily every day, working in the fields, hunting, and taking care of the dragons that occasionally returned to the mountains.

Suddenly, a nightmare attacked this peaceful village.

Bad guys attacked them.

Wrath of the Dragon

Once upon a time, there was a great dragon that ruled the earth.

The dragon’s job was to see the land around the world.

Such a serious dragon had a favorite place to live.

When the dragon finished his work, he would return to his home.

He looks forward to contact with the kobolds who take good care of him and his family…

……

It has been a month since I bought the picture book.

Although there have been some small events in my life in an unfamiliar place, I have been able to enjoy a peaceful daily life surrounded by beautiful women who live on the ground.

Every day, I read picture books to them while following the characters, and when that is over, we go out into the city to study and translate daily conversations.

Occasionally, I leave the city and return to Chateau to teach Ines, Felicia, Alessia-san, and others the language by giving them picture books that I have translated.

These are peaceful days.

Their studies are going well.

Dorothea-san and Marina-san have also made an amazing achievement in just one month: they have mastered listening comprehension and simple conversation in everyday conversation, though only partially.

Ilma-san, who was very confident in her language learning, has almost mastered everyday conversation and is now able to converse fluently.

For someone like me who was born in Japan, it was extraordinary to be able to master an unknown language in one month, but maybe there were other geniuses like her in Japan that I just didn’t know about.

Following Marina-san’s instructions, I went to various places to eavesdrop, or rather, to learn the language, and as a result, I was able to gather a certain amount of information.

The land where we are now is definitely the continent that was written in the documents of the Duke’s Castle.

There are several countries on this continent, including small countries.

There are also countries that are separated from this continent to the north and south of this continent.

There are more ancient ruins on this continent than on the central continent.

The strength of the monsters is not so different from the central continent, and it depends on the location. In particular, it is said that strong monsters often live in ruins.

Ruins are managed by the government or guilds, but since they are not dungeons, they seem to be neglected except for management to prevent monsters from living in them after the excavation is finished.

And most of the ruins in places where people can easily enter have already been explored.

We have learned many things.

One of the most important pieces of information is that the picture book was not a made-up story.

Of course, not all of them are true, and some of them are adapted for children, but it seems that a large percentage of them are true, perhaps for the purpose of studying history.

And it is a series of stories.

A fantasy epic that goes from “Poor Kobold” to “The Wrath of the Dragon.”

The story is about a man (or a country) who steals into a dragon’s lair in search of dragon materials and treasures.

They get a lot of materials and treasures.

On their way back, they discover a village of kobolds.

They attack and rob the village.

The dragon returns home.

Naturally, he is furious.

While rescuing his favorite kobolds, he lays waste to the country where the kobolds were kidnapped.

Still angry, the dragon finally tore the continent apart and attacked the eastern part of the continent, where the country that did the foolish thing was located. Eventually, the eastern part of the continent was sunk.

Finally calmed down, the dragon returns with the saved kobolds to the place where he used to live, which is also cut off from the continent, and locks himself in with a barrier.

The dragon lives happily ever after.

…It’s not that happy, is it?

Obviously, “Poor Kobolds” and “Wrath of the Dragon” were not picture books to entertain children but to instill the horror of dragons in them from an early age.

Well, that is understandable.

There were probably many people in the eastern part of the continent who had nothing to do with the incident. But the dragons did not care about them, and they were destroyed.

They probably wanted to avoid disturbing such a dangerous existence.

Because the continent was divided into five parts, and one of them sank. It would have been unfortunate if they had offended it.

When we found out that the story in the picture book was true, we were amazed.

The huge craters we saw under the sea before arriving at Toyen were the work of an earth dragon, and the island where we spent the night without being able to land because of the barrier was the home of an earth dragon.

We had spent the night next to an incredible landmine without knowing it.

It would be too scary.

I thought the sunken land was the work of a reincarnated person or a demon king, but in fact, it was the work of a dragon, and it seems that the dragon still exists… It makes me want to go home.

“Wataru. The Chateau is coming into view.”

While I was sitting in the living room of the Lutto, remembering everything that had happened since I came to Toyen, Dorothea-san came to tell me that the Chateau was in sight.

Is it the first Chateau in a week? I wonder if everyone is okay?

***

“Now we will hold a meeting to decide our future course of action.”

The day after returning to the Chateau, playing with Rimu and Pent as much as I wanted, and spending the night to the fullest with Ines and Felicia, a meeting led by Dorothea-san began.

Now that we were somewhat used to the language, it was time to get serious.

Well, it was more of a tea party than a meeting since we were all gathered in my room, and there were plenty of drinks and snacks available.

“After all, we’re adventurers, so isn’t it best to look for ruins that haven’t been destroyed?”

Alessia-san seemed to want to go on a treasure hunt.

That’s not a bad idea since we can work in places that are normally inaccessible to most people.

However, we have a huge surplus of treasure, so I don’t think it’s a bad idea to get more.

I would love to have more money to spend in this country but with the ruins… I feel like we might get something that’s hard to exchange for cash again and be stuck with it.

“If we were to find some ruins that hadn’t been destroyed, wouldn’t that cause a fuss again?”

Hmm, Claretta-san has a point. If it became known that we had discovered the ruins, wouldn’t the country and the guilds keep quiet?

“We could search for them in a place where no one but us can get to them. If we keep quiet, they will never know.”

Alessia-san doesn’t seem to be after treasure or honor; she just wants pure adventure. Ines seems to share the same opinion, and they both cackle with glee. It’s a sight for sore eyes.

“I’d like to visit other countries, the north and south of the continent.”

That was Ilma-san’s opinion. Of course, she is interested in the ruins but also curious about foreign cultures.

After that, various opinions were expressed, but no one wanted to bring up the subject of Dragon Island.

Everyone seemed to pretend that they had never heard of it.

As one would expect from first-rate adventurers. They seem to have the good sense to stay away from dangers beyond their control. It was the right decision.

After all, no one wants to get close to a monster that could tear the continent apart, right?

“Well, for the time being, we will travel around this continent, repeating small businesses, and if we find a place where we think there might be ruins, we will explore it. Later we will consider the northern and southern parts of the continent.”

As a result of the meeting, we decided to follow the policy that Dorothea-san had outlined.

Since we will also be discovering ruins, we will be traveling on land instead of sea for the first time in a long time.

I’m worried that it will be difficult to use the Ship Summoning, but I’m sure it will be fun.

“Now that we have a plan, let’s get ready for the journey. Pack your things and let’s go. First, we need to register with the Mercenary Guild in Toyen!”

Alessia-san is very excited to finally set foot on the continent.

Carla-san, Claretta-san, Ines, and Felicia also looked happy, and I think they all wanted to visit Toyen.

Joining the Mercenary Guild, huh?

…Everyone has learned the bare minimum of the language, and since we’re going to be traveling, it would definitely be more convenient to have an identification card.

But there will definitely be a fuss.

This time, I’m repatriating the Chateau, so we’ll have a full crew.

The eight beautiful women alone are sure to get us into trouble, and now we’ll be joined by Rimu and the others and Pent. There’s no way we won’t make a scene.

In fact, it makes me cry that it was already confirmed that there would be a commotion if we brought Pent along.

Well, we can’t leave Pent at sea, and since we’re going on a trip as soon as we get an identification card, I don’t mind a little commotion, but… we just have to be careful not to become a wanted person.

I feel like praying to God, but I don’t want to pray because I think it would add to the commotion.

***

“Um, excuse me.”

Arriving at the port city of Toyen, I called the gatekeeper.

“What is it?”

“I have a familiar. Is it a problem if I bring him into the city?”

“Hmm? The slime on your head? It is not normal slime, but if it is slime, it is fine. But you have to make sure that you register your familiar properly.”

Rimu seems to be fine. Although Rimu is strong enough to stand up to any of those mercenaries, he looks so cute that people don’t seem to be alarmed by his appearance.

“No, not just this kid, but two more slimes and…”

“Oh, if they’re slime, that’s fine.”

Before I can finish, the gatekeeper sees the slime on Dorothea-san and Marina-san’s shoulders and gives me permission to enter.

I can see that he is paying attention to Dorothea-san and the others, and in a way, I feel sorry for him.

“No, I let him wait at a distance so as not to cause a commotion, but he is a sea serpent. He’s young, but he’s big in his own way.”

I thought about not letting Pent into Toyen, but I decided to take him because I really wanted to register him as a familiar and get his familiar certificate.

First, I have to successfully convince the gatekeeper, who looks at me like, “What the hell are you talking about?”

…I wondered if I would be able to make it to the destination safely.
