Chapter 13 – Day 12 of Living in the Demonic Land

The next day, I woke up before dawn, cooked the meat, and made the bread. It’s a thin loaf of bread made with flour from the military training facility and swimmer’s bird eggs.

It’s not very tasty, but when I dip it in wild boar gravy, it tastes just right.

The room smells strange because I’ve secured too many different kinds of meat.

I tried to feed the dangerous meat to the forest rat parents and their kids, but they didn’t seem to like it very much. I also found out that forest rats don’t eat much of it, even when it’s smoked.

Even though I don’t know what’s out there, I’ve never had a situation where I needed to preserve food.

I decided to hang them up in a well-ventilated area and try to make a ham out of them. The ham would be a good substitute ingredient when I went to the training facility.

My mistake was that I almost ran out of salt. When I ran out of the salt I had brought at the beginning, I had to look for salt in the demonic land.

“I should have asked for salt at the military training facility.”

I would either have to find rock salt or go to the sea to get some. Now was not the time to go to the mountain range.

As the sky began to turn white, I climbed back up the hill behind the swamp. I scanned the surrounding forest, looking for a break in the trees.

There must be a river at the break, and if I went down the river, I could reach the sea.

It was all speculation, and I was unsure, but I went to the break in the trees and found a stream. I went down the stream and found a big river.

“I guess I was right. If I keep going down this way, maybe one day I can make it to the sea.”

Today, I would run along the river and try to get as far as I could without looking for new plants or monsters. Let’s prioritize getting salt.

The river flows very slowly.

Big monsters appear from time to time, but I pass them all. I cut down the plants that were blocking my way with my saber and cleared a path.

The river meanders further to the east. The sun’s rays hit the trees in the demonic land, causing the ground to seep through the trees. Picking up speed, I ran through the forest, listening to the sound of the river on my left.

On the way, I was attacked by a subspecies of wild bear, which I decapitated while running through the forest. I took only enough meat for lunch and a magic stone, leaving the rest behind. The plants of the demonic land would eat it soon enough.

As I continued to run through the forest, suddenly, there was no more ground in front of me.

I looked down and saw a sheer cliff.

“Oh crap!”

Below the cliff, the forest stretched out.

Beyond it, on the horizon, I saw something shimmering.

“Is it the sea?”

I thought I could smell the tide.

It wasn’t so much that I couldn’t jump down, but I took the precaution of wrapping the vine around a tree and climbing down.

To get back up, I could just grab the vines and climb back up.

There was a waterfall in the river, and I got some clean water from the waterfall basin. The water was clear and tasted very good.

“Am I crazy to think that the water tastes so good?”

I think I drank a lot of alcohol when I lived in the city.

After taking a break, I decided to run as fast as I could; since I had entered the demonic land, my level and stamina had improved, and no matter how much I ran, I did not get tired. I ran through the soft, humid ground.

I crossed two hills, but I still could not see the sea.

Just when I thought that the scent I smelled on the cliff might have been my imagination…

Suddenly, the forest cleared, and I found myself in a meadow.

On the other side of the meadow, I could see the sea.

It was long after noon. I was so focused on running that I seemed to have lost track of time.

I ran to the beach, picked up some seawater, and licked it a little.

“Mmm! It’s definitely salty!”

Using driftwood that had fallen on the beach as firewood, I grilled some wild bear meat and ate lunch while watching the sea.

Finally, I reached the eastern edge of my land, feeling quite pleased with myself.

“I guess there is an end to the demonic land.

If I go south along the sea, there might be a fishing village or a town, but that’s enough for now.

“Hmm! What’s that?”

While I was biting into my meat, I saw something washing ashore from the sea.

When I approached it, I saw that it was in the shape of a blue person. I thought the person had drowned and washed ashore, but the chest was expanding and contracting and breathing.

When I lifted the person onto the beach, I saw that there were scars all over the body, and the person was pale. Two horns sprouted from the forehead, and there were scales on the neck.

“Could it be a demon tribe?”

No matter how I looked at this person, it was the demon tribe I had heard rumors about. The demon tribe that lost the war in the past should have disappeared somewhere.

The black robe the person was wearing was heavy with water. I took off the robe and let the person sleep by the fire.

I hung the robe on a piece of driftwood to dry.

To be honest, I don’t know what to do with this intruder.

There were wounds all over the body, and I didn’t have anything to treat them with.

For now, I decide to wash the person’s body with water and leave it there, but I might not be able to wake up pleasantly if I just walk away.

I did not check the chest and lower body because a piece of inner cloth covered the chest and lower body, but the chest was large, and there was no bulge on the lower body that a man should have.

“Woman, huh? This is a problem. Hmm~”

My head itches, probably because my brain isn’t working properly.

If I could, I’d like it to go away right away, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. If I just do it and it doesn’t work, I’ll be able to sort it out emotionally.

“Alright!”

I decide to go into the forest and look for the leaves that the forest rat eats. The leaves that the forest rats eat are extremely bad, but they have the effect of restoring one’s strength.

If possible, when I go to find those leaves, it would be better if a sea monster or a monster that came out of the forest ate her so that I can think, “I couldn’t do anything about it.” That way, I can keep my mental health.

Contrary to my expectations, when I entered the forest, a forest rat looked at me from a branch in front of me and tilted its head. I found the leaves easily.

I took as much time as possible to select and collect the best quality leaves.

As evening approached, I returned to the beach with both hands full of leaves that would restore one’s strength, but there was no sign that the demon tribe had been attacked. She was sleeping peacefully.

I ground the leaves and applied them to her wounds.

I wondered if she would finally wake up when I lifted her legs and turned her body inside out, but she didn’t wake up at all.

I had done what I could, so I decided to make salt, which was my original goal. I took sea water and boiled it in a pot to remove the water.

I could make salt crystals at home by hanging strings, so I concentrated on removing the water, regardless of whether there was sand, small shells, or crabs in the mix.

By sunset, I had about half a small pot of salt. It was still not enough.

I decided to camp on the beach for the day.

I thought the demon tribe would have woken up by now, but she was still asleep.

However, judging by the way she turned over in her sleep, she might have already woken up and is trying to figure out what is going on.

When she gets hungry, she will wake up.

I leave the demon tribe alone and burn the crab monster, the giza crab.

The giza crab is a crab with jagged claws, about the size of a small dog.

Its shell was hard but easy to cut off by aiming at the joints.

When I peeled off the shell, I found it was filled with miso.

The blue shell turned red, and as the miso began to sizzle, a delicious aroma wafted through the air.

I scooped up some of the miso and put it in my mouth, and the rich umami flavor filled my mouth.

“Delicious!”

I said, taking a small magic stone out of its mouth.

The crab meat was also very tasty.

For some reason, when people eat crabs, they become more concentrated.

I was unaware that a drooling demon tribe was approaching next to me.

I jumped back in surprise, but then I asked the demon tribe, “Do you want some?” and she nodded repeatedly.

She was silent while eating the giza crab, but when she finished, the female demon put on her dry robe and started talking to me.

I didn’t understand what she was saying because of the different language, but as I kept saying, “This is a demonic land,” my name became “Makyo. [T/n: Makyo means demonic land, devil’s nest, or something like that.]

It was too much trouble to correct her, so I decided to call myself Makyo.

She kept circling her hands and doing the dogeza pose, but since we are from different cultures, I couldn’t understand what she was trying to tell me.

I showed her a drawing on the beach, and then we communicated with the drawing.

She seemed to be saying that there was a war in the land of the demon tribe and that she had escaped.

I explained to her that this was the land of humans and that she should go home, but she didn’t seem to understand.

I don’t care if she really doesn’t understand or just pretends not to, but if possible, I want her to leave this place.

I told her that there might be a village or a town down south, but she wouldn’t leave me.

I have no choice but to leave her alone and do what I have to do.

I get some seawater and put it in a pot to make salt.

When the demon tribe saw this, she tried to cooperate and heated the pot with magic, burning the salt.

“Don’t burn it!”

I said angrily, and the next time, she adjusted the power properly.

I asked her what kind of magic she knew.

I could only do daily life magic, so I decided that if she wanted to stay here, she could teach me magic in exchange for rent.

I made a small ball of water, and the female demon tribe showed me how to make a huge ball of water.

I wondered if it was because she was from a demon tribe, but she had a tremendous amount of magic power.

I asked her how she did it, but she gave me a vague explanation, saying things like “Guoooo!” and “Suppon.”

After dark, I told her I was going to bed, and she told me she would watch the fire for me.

I thought she could probably make a fire with her magic, but she wanted to do it, so I let her do what she wanted.

I put on the king anaconda’s breastplate, just in case.

She didn’t seem to have any physical strength, so even if she attacked me, it would probably be with magic.

I naively assumed that even if she attacked me while I was wearing the king anaconda’s breastplate, I would not be killed instantly.

However, based on what I had seen so far, I didn’t think it would attack me.

Was I being too careless?

After a while, I thought I heard a cry.

She had drifted away from her home, so it was natural that she would want to cry.

I pretended I didn’t hear it and went back to sleep.
