Chapter 17 – Day 16 of Living in the Demonic Land
The following day, Cher and I went looking for wood to build a boat.
I don’t expect Cher to stay with me forever. If anyone saw me with a demon, the soldiers would come and arrest us.
I’m sure Cher wants to go back to the country where she was born and raised.
So, I drew a picture on the ground to explain the process of cutting down a tree, making a boat, and sending Cher off. Cher nodded and stuck out her tongue several times. It seemed she was grateful.
As a test, I decided to cut down a tree with a thick trunk near my house. I tried to use the magic sword made of an unknown metal that P.J. had and cast a wind spell on it.
The conductivity of the magic power was too good, and just by using it, it pierced the tree and cut down the trees in front of it for about 20 meters. P.J.’s possessions are super dangerous. Let’s try not to use them as much as possible.
“Well… this is a bad one.”
Cher smiled in shock.
Anyway, I cleared away the branches of the fallen trees and hollowed them out to make a boat. There were a lot of fallen trees, so I failed about eight times.
I didn’t use P.J.’s sword because it seemed to cut through the ground. It was pretty hard work.
I used a palm resin axe to shape it.
It was difficult to carve the inside, so I decided to make a special tool. I made a small spade out of palm resin and carved the boat as if I were digging in a field.
However, I didn’t know that wood splits when it dries out. It was humid, so I asked Cher to use magic to remove the moisture from the wood, and it split lengthwise with ease.
“”Aaaaaa…””
We both sighed in disappointment.
It seems that natural drying is best, so we left the cut wood in a line in front of the house. I noticed that I could now carry large trees without any trouble.
“If I can’t live in the demonic land anymore, maybe I can work as a mover.”
“Mover?”
“No, nothing.”
“No, nothing.”
Cher seems to be trying to learn the language by imitating me. Maybe I’ll ask her to teach me the language of the demons as well. I don’t think I’ll ever use it, though.
After lunch, I went to the fields.
Because I had cut down the bendgrass, the Swimmer Bird was trying to build a nest.
“Why?!”
Why does the Swimmers Bird always try to build a nest in my field?
In a fit of anger, I punched the Swimmers Bird and sent it flying. The razor grass hadn’t grown that much, so it only took a little pulling.
The vegetables are growing quietly. I hope they grow properly, even if it’s just a little bit at a time.
I water them and plant some new bendgrass.
“I’m the only one in the world who does this kind of work in the fields. What is this?”
But there’s no choice because if I don’t do it, the field will quickly become overgrown.
I decided to draw a map of the area around the swamp.
I headed for the hill on the other side of the swamp, keeping an eye out for Treant. It was already gone.
Cher had defeated the monsters by poisoning or petrifying them. I’d prefer it if she could defeat them in a normal state because when they’re in an abnormal state, they can’t be eaten, but she said that was impossible with her current abilities.
We spent the rest of the day drawing maps and gathering cam fruit.
The old imp flew around and tried to confuse us, but we chased it away by throwing stones at it.
“That face pisses me off.”
“Piss off~”
Anyway, let’s leave the old imp for now and go find the ruins drawn in P.J.’s notebook.
Cher is playing with the Haze Turtle, turning its shell to stone. I told her to help me instead of playing, but she just nodded and tried to lift the Haze Turtle.
I’m too lazy to explain, so I’ll just leave it at that.
I was checking the ground and rocks when Cher flew through the air screaming.
“Come to think of it, I was blown away when I first encountered the Haze Turtle.”
I thought her neck might be broken, so I went to where she had landed, and Cher was caught by a Golden Bat, screaming.
“Makyo!”
She really needs a staff to take care of things.
When I appeared, the Golden Bat emitted an ultrasonic sound to threaten me. My head hurts.
“Aaa… Aaa…”
Cher’s leg was caught, and she became dizzy.
Meanwhile, Golden Bat flew into the sky with Cher in its grip.
“I won’t let you do that!”
I threw my axe at Golden Bat like a boomerang. I thought it would hit its wings, but it easily dodged it.
“Oh no…”
If it flees to the sky, there’s nothing I can do.
For now, I threw down whatever rocks I could find.
As the saying goes, ‘A few blows will do the trick,’ and one of the stones I threw hit the Golden Bat’s wing, making a hole in it. As the Golden Bat turned and fell, I cut off its legs with my knife and saved Cher.
Cher was dizzy, but she stuck out her tongue to thank me.
In the end, we searched the ruins until sunset, but we couldn’t find a single trace around the swamp.
I’ll keep making maps and growing vegetables if only a little at a time. Cher’s stay was extended to dry the wood.
Cher’s hands and mouth are covered in grease as she happily bites into the meat.
“No, Cher, you have to pay your rent.”
“Rent?”
Cher doesn’t understand at all.
Let’s send her away early before she gets too attached to me. That was dangerous; I almost went too easy on her.
