Chapter 24 – Day 23 of Living in the Demonic Land

Starting today, I’m going to search for the ruins that are said to be in the demonic land.

Think about it. If there were ruins on your land, as an adventurer, you’d have to go and look for the treasure, right? As a landowner, if there were ruins on the land you bought, you’d probably think it was cursed. Anyway, it feels strange not to look for it.

Well, for now, even if I do look for them, I’ll just have to walk around the forest exhaustively. P.J.’s notebook contains information about the entrance to the ruins, what it looks like inside, and cautions, but it does not say where it is.

After pulling out the weeds in the field and watering the plants, I enter the forest with a piece of white paper and some charcoal.

The iron sword is very easy to use, and I feel like I can cut anything with it if I use magic.

Swinging the sword, I slay the monsters and draw the things I see on the map.

To be honest, I’m not making much progress. It’s mostly dense forest with streams and hills, but it all seems pretty much the same.

Still, I believe that this kind of humble work is important, so I’m making a map.

“Wait a minute, I don’t even know what the whole demonic land looks like to begin with.”

I drew a map, but I didn’t know how big it was.

I know there’s a mountain range to the north and the sea to the east, but how far south is my land? I entered the demonic land from the west, so I knew the western boundary. The eastern edge is the sea, so that’s the limit. As for the north… I’ll check what’s on the other side of the mountain range, but what about the south…? I remembered the map I saw at the realtor’s that said it was a cliff.

In other words, it’s my land up to the cliff. Maybe it was a really good buy.

“Bad face.”

“Cher, you got to make a living and pay the rent, right?”

“Your face is bad.”

“That’s a little harsh.”

After lunch, I left the map in the forest and went home. After eating, I decided to go south.

“Is it good?”

“It’s delicious!”

“Fufufufufu.”

Cher asks for feedback on the bread she made.

She seems unhappy when it burns, and she feeds it to the Forest Rat family.

The Forest Rat has given birth again, and the family has grown to a total of 14. The number of experimental monsters is growing.

Since it would be tedious to clean up if they kept multiplying, I made a wooden cage and separated the rats into males and females. The female rats made sad-sounding screeches, but the male rats lay down and slept. Are the females more sexually active? I fed the male rats some cam berries and let them out.

After some light warm-up exercises, I put some magic power on my feet and ran south. Cher was right behind me.

However, the speed of both of us slowed down. That’s to be expected since we were running along a pathless path. What was blocking our way were the plants of the demonic land that were trying to hunt us down. We were no longer hit by the bendgrass, but we often had to stop because the vegetation had changed, with giant ginkgo leaves falling with the water and a large amount of rotting stench buried in the ground.

As the vegetation changed, so did the monsters, and it seemed that the size of the individual monsters was getting bigger than the swamp. I was quite confused when a Poison Scorpion that was supposed to be the size of a palm appeared to be about four meters long. What’s more, when you defeat one, its friends appear in large numbers, so it takes time to deal with them.

I thought that would be the case until I saw the cliff, but there was no sign of it yet.

“Huh?”

I wondered how far the forest would go, but then I suddenly found myself in the middle of a desert.

It wasn’t a rocky area like I’d seen in the mountain range, but a desert made entirely of sand.

As I was wondering if this desert was my land, I saw a ridiculously long earthworm leap through the air and disappear into the desert.

Could this be the giant monster that appears every three months?

Looking at P.J.’s notebook, it seems to be an ordinary monster called a sandworm. It’s incredibly large, but it’s classified as a weak monster. The fact that it’s written in the notebook means that this desert is also part of the demonic land.

“There are deserts in the demonic land, too, huh…”

Thinking that it was all my land made me feel heavy.

Anyway, the sandworm came towards us, so I attacked it, but even with my magic sword, I could only scratch the surface a little.

“This is normal? I don’t think I can win.”

To be honest, it was around that time that I started to think that P.J. might be crazy.

Cher also tried to use water magic, but first of all, the power of water magic weakened in the desert, and the sandworm swallowed the water.

I tried to find its weak points by concentrating my magic power, but all I could find was that its skin was tough. Fortunately, it wasn’t aggressive, so it didn’t follow us even when we ran away.

“Let’s go home for today.”

“Let’s go back, it’s dangerous.”

We ran home. Our bodies were the color of burnt bread, and our hair was rough and stiff.

The only relief was to have a bath when we got home.

  1. “Think about it. If there were ruins on your land, as an adventurer, you’d have to go and look for the treasure, right?”

And who in particular would like to buy that supposed treasure from him, meaning any relics from some magically advanced culture from the past? It would be too lucky to be true to find anything useful and still in working condition, and anything else would be only a waste of space cluttering his home. His experiences as an adventurer so far amounted to being a handyman and a herb gatherer, so why this sudden ambition? The pacing of this story is all over the place.
