Chapter 25 – Day 24 of Living in the Demonic Land
When I got home last night, I read P.J.’s notebook carefully, and I found a weapon that was completely different from mine.
It was a magic circle.
It seems that P.J. was quite knowledgeable, and when I looked closer, I saw that he had drawn magic circles in the four corners of the page and in the empty spaces as if he were doodling. To be honest, I thought they were just doodles, but when I drew them on the ground and tried to channel magic through them, they exploded or cut out spaces, and it was really dangerous.
“Who the hell is P.J.?”
When I looked at P.J.’s armor and weapons, which were stored in the storehouse in the back, I realized that they all had magic circles built into them. In short, they were all magic tools.
What’s more, they were carved so thinly that you couldn’t tell just by looking at them, or they were hidden in the patterns. It seems that he was an incredibly skilled magic tool craftsman.
But why did such a magician have to investigate ruins in such a demonic land and die alone?
“I have no idea.”
“Is he stupid?”
Cher said, looking at P.J.’s grave.
For now, I’m going to the southern desert with P.J.’s one-handed sword. I also gave Cher P.J.’s knife.
We’ll defeat the Poison Scorpions on the way to the desert, just like yesterday. The only difference is the speed of the defeat and the amount of magic power used. Killing them instantly saves energy. Both Cher and I thought P.J.’s weapons were amazing, but when you use them as magic tools, you can really understand how amazing they are.
Just by pointing P.J.’s sword at it and channeling a little magic power, the blade extended about 10 meters, and the Poison Scorpion was split in half. Even the trees growing behind it toppled over.
“This is too dangerous.”
Cher’s knife was a magic tool that emitted a laser from the tip of the blade.
Just by pointing the tip of the blade at a monster and channeling magic through it, a gaping hole would open in the monster. There were also monsters that would attack without realizing that they had a hole in them, but they would fall to the ground without reaching us.
“It’s strong!”
However, it is not infinite, and if you use it too many times in a row, you will run out of magic power.
“I can’t move…”
We took a break on the riverbank and had lunch until Cher’s magic power recovered. The menu consisted of Cher’s special bread and stir-fried meat and vegetables.
“I wish there was some kind of potion that could restore magic power…”
While I was feeding Cher, who couldn’t even lift her arm, a frog monster the size of a house appeared from the river. It must have been attracted by the smell of the food and came towards us.
I quickly grabbed Cher and ran into the woods.
I had P.J.’s sword, but if I ran out of magic power here, we’d both die. There was no guarantee that there was only one of them.
To avoid the worst, I sacrificed my lunch and hid behind some bushes in the forest.
As I waited and watched, I suddenly felt lighter on my back.
“Makyo, Save me.”
Cher was pulled up by the vines hanging from the tree.
I had forgotten, but the plants in the demonic land are more aggressive. The carnivorous plants are waiting for Cher with their large petals spread over the tree.
I cut the vines with my sword and saved her, but colorful butterflies gathered around, probably wanting a share of the remains. The petals of the carnivorous plant close when something touches them, just like the bendgrass, so it begins to eat the butterfly monsters.
Butterfly scales danced around us, and the air turned yellow.
We ran quickly towards the riverbed. The giant frog monster was still eating our lunch, just like before.
The giant frog monster was in front of us, and the butterfly scales were approaching from behind. Cher could not move.
I left everything to chance and jumped into the river with Cher.
There was a lot of mud in the water, so I couldn’t see anything. I swam as far as I could, holding my breath as long as I could.
“Puh!”
I was swept downstream, but at least I was still alive.
“We’re so lucky!”
I got out of the river and calmed down for a while. My clothes were soaked, and I had left my bag on the riverbank.
I cautiously returned to the riverbank and found a huge frog monster lying on its back, twitching and paralyzed. It seemed it had inhaled the scales of the butterfly monster.
“Stupid.”
The scales had already been blown away by the wind. I quickly stabbed the frog monster in the neck with my sword and pulled out its guts in one fell swoop. Even the biggest monster will die if its entrails are exposed.
For lunch, I switched from bread to a large frog’s leg. It was refreshing and delicious, but Cher wasn’t satisfied.
“That’s because you got carried away and ran out of magic power.”
I said, and then she looked dejected.
After eating some meat and resting, her magic power had recovered enough, so we went to the desert.
We collected the magic stone from the frog monster. We continued, being careful of the flowers in the trees.
The sandworm in the desert was killed in seconds by P.J.’s sword. It’s true that this might be in the weak category.
I wonder if P.J. made it himself or if there was a particularly skilled blacksmith. Perhaps there is a blacksmith near the cave.
Although I was able to explore the desert, I almost got lost as soon as I entered it.
The shape of the sand dunes changes with the wind, so if you run around, you’ll get lost in no time.
In a forest, you can find your way by cutting down a tree and looking at a tree ring, but there is no such thing in the desert.
If the sun is out, that’s fine, but since sandstorms come and go, you can’t always tell which way the sun is, so you still need a compass.
“How do you make a compass?”
I wonder if I can find out by asking the captain at the training facility?
“What’s wrong?”
Cher asked me while I was lost in thought.
“If we keep going like this, we’ll lose our way and never get back.”
I explained the situation by drawing it in the sand,
“Can you use a monster?”
She said.
It seems that it would be a good idea to capture a monster with a strong homing instinct in the forest and then release it when we get lost.
“Nice idea!”
“Nice idea…?!”
So I decided to go to the forest and catch some monsters. Since the monsters in the south are large and there are many plants whose biology is unknown, I decided to look for them near my house.
I went to the stream at the western entrance to the demonic land to wash off the sand that had stuck to me, and I saw the priestess from before standing on the other side of the river.
She had been left behind by her own party, so I thought I had left her at the military training facility.
“Can I help you?”
“I left White Lightning! Can you please allow me to stay here?”
The priestess is blonde, blue-eyed, and has a beautiful appearance. The priestess’ clothes also seem to be freshly ironed. There are monsters in the forest outside the demonic land, so did she change her clothes nearby? But she can’t be dressed like that in the demonic land.
“No, I refuse.”
“I’m a former priestess, so I’m sure I’ll be useful if you get hurt or sick! Besides, I was in charge of managing the supplies in the party! Can’t I stay here?”
I’d already said no, but she was pushing really hard.
“No, like I said…”
“I’m from the north, so I’m strong against the cold! My name is Jennifer Volkov! Please let me stay here!”
Even if she’s strong against the cold, I don’t think she’ll be that useful in the demonic land.
And why is she in such a remote place in the demonic land? Could it be that she was kicked out of the party?
“Could it be that you were kicked out of that adventurer’s party?”
“…Th-That’s none of your business!”
Jennifer’s face turned bright red with displeasure.
“No, this is my land and I can’t just leave it without knowing what’s going on.”
Jennifer looks down and is silent for a moment before looking up again.
“That’s right! I got kicked out of the adventurer’s party! Those friends I put everything into told me they don’t need me anymore! So please let me stay here!”
“I don’t know what you mean by ‘so’… why don’t you go home?”
“I don’t have a family. I’m an orphan…”
“Then why don’t you save some money, find a nice place and relax?”
“This place is the best place for me!”
“This place?”
“Yes, there’s no one here, so I don’t have to worry about anyone hurting me. It’s a wonderful place! It’s my ideal place!”
“I’m here, and it’s my land.”
“I heard you saved me, right?”
She didn’t listen to me. Are you saying that I should take responsibility?
“It would be inconvenient if you became a living dead in this demonic land.”
“Demonic land? Just as I thought, this land is perfect for my final resting place!”
“Don’t make it your final resting place.”
“Well, the sun is setting, so can you show me the way to your house for now?”
Her eyes are bloodshot, and she gives off an air of determination that leaves you no choice. She’s talking about making this place her final resting place, so she’s clearly a dangerous person who’s ready to die.
If I refuse her, she’ll probably just die and turn into a monster, so I’ll just let her stay for a while and send her away.
“You must pay rent according to the number of nights you stay. Also, you must not tell anyone what you saw in this demonic land.”
“I understand! I’ve already got the money!”
It’s a huge hassle, but I decided to take her to the cave.
“Gyaah!”
Jennifer was attacked by the slime in the stream and ran out of magic power.
I kicked the slime away and carried the unconscious Jennifer back to the house. Around the cave, Cher kept bringing in and releasing insect-like monsters.
“What’s that?”
Cher asked as she looked at Jennifer.
“Some kind of dangerous person. Do you want to eat it?”
“No thanks.”
Jennifer was still unconscious. I decided to leave her in bed for now and leave her alone until she woke up.
“Have you found any monsters that might be able to tell us which way to go?”
I asked Cher, but she shook her head. Apparently, there were no monsters that could tell us the direction at the moment.

I wonder why in those stories it’s usually someone else learning the language of the protagonist, but not the protagonist learning the language of someone else. I suppose that suggests he is too dumb to learn another language without some magic or miracle.
