Chapter 14 – Three Options for Acquiring Weapons and Overlooking
In the reception room, there were chairs with magnificent carved designs.
The milky white material had a mysterious color that looked like marble or ivory.
There was no doubt that they were a masterpiece that William had prepared to entertain his guests.
William served tea to Wataru and then took a sip himself.
This is a way of saying that there is no poison in it, but Wataru doesn’t even have a sense of caution.
He drinks the tea served to him without hesitation.
“(It’s not black tea, and it has a strange taste. Is it some kind of herbal tea?)”
Even though they are generally called teas, the ingredients are different, and the way they are drunk is also different.
The refreshing taste and the aroma rising to the nose were pleasant.
“It’s really delicious. The aroma is nice.”
“I’m glad you like it. Some people add jam or sugar to it, depending on their tastes.”
“Does everyone drink this tea?”
“Yes, everyone from the common people to the nobility drinks it. However, the common people only drink it with sugar on special occasions. And even then, it’s usually quite a strong-tasting sugar.”
He probably explained it to Wataru, who was a foreigner, on purpose.
Such small considerations are very much appreciated.
Nothing is more likely to cause him to accidentally step on a landmine than the subtle differences in daily life and customs.
In some countries, the gestures for “come here” and “go away” are completely opposite.
Or, if you don’t know the rules, you might do something that would make the Japanese angry, like walking into a Japanese house with your shoes on.
“The white sugar I bought from you, Wataru-sama, was bought by the governor of this town. It will probably be used later at banquets for the nobles of the royal capital.”
“That’s really fast, considering it was just yesterday.”
“It was a high-quality, valuable item. Thanks to this, I was able to make a good deal. Now, let’s continue this another time, but what is it you wanted to ask me this time, Wataru-sama?”
“I wanted to buy some weapons for Aire.”
As Wataru explained the situation, William nodded slightly.
He must have understood many of the details.
Afterward, he asked for advice on how to get the weapons.
William readily agreed to help.
“I don’t deal with weapons, so I can only give you my opinion as a merchant, but is that okay?”
“That’s fine. Thank you very much.”
“There are a couple of ways to do this. One is to ask the blacksmiths in this city. There should be a district with a number of workshops where the blacksmiths who generally work with weapons are located.”
“There is such a place?”
“Yes. There are also workshops that supply the Adventurers’ Guild, so there should be some stock.”
“It’s good that you can buy the actual item from the workshop.”
“However, some items are made to order, so it might take a little time. Also, since spears are not made by specialized blacksmiths, they may be able to adjust the handle to suit you, but the quality may be inferior.”
“I see. It would be nice if there were a master blacksmith.”
“If there were someone like that, I would have heard of him, even if I was in another field. Merchants are all about things. But at least I’ve never heard of them.”
“I see…”
The fact that things have settled down in this city might be a big advantage for Wataru.
Now that he’s unfamiliar with the common sense of this world and has no basis for living, it’s not a bad idea to focus his activities on this city without expanding his activities too quickly.
But what about the fact that the quality is not very good?
The warrior Aire, who was said to be very famous, showed a certain commitment to weapons.
For now, Wataru will wait for the next option without interrupting to hear the rest of the story and make a decision.
After William moistened his mouth with tea, he continued his explanation.
“The second option is to travel to a nearby town. You can take a boat down the river and then take a carriage to the west, about a day’s walk, and there is a village there that is reasonably well known for its weapon forging. It’s called Fiskars Village. If you’re looking for quality, it’s probably your best bet.”
“Is there a problem?”
“I don’t know what the price will be for custom production. Also, I don’t have any experience buying or selling in the past, so I can’t rely on my connections. If you don’t have time to make it, I guess you could buy a product that’s already made and ready to go in the store.”
That requires moving around.
But if he’s going to pay anyway, he wants something good.
Weapons are necessary for self-defense, so if he spares the money and time here and Aire is unable to work properly, he will have to bear the consequences himself.
Even today, Japan is the safest country in the world, but in some countries like Brazil, there are areas where murder is a common occurrence.
This world didn’t seem as safe as Japan.
Otherwise, William wouldn’t have warned him at their first meeting.
Wataru looked at Aire sideways.
Aire didn’t move a muscle and listened to the explanation with serious eyes.
Her innocent appearance was gone, and she showed her warrior side.
“(She can also make that kind of face…)”
“The third option is to travel up the river to the royal capital.”
“The royal capital?”
“In terms of variety and quality, the royal capital might be the best. However, of course, there will be some shops that are better than others, and the prices may be even higher. There are merchants in the royal capital who do business with us, so it is possible to ask them for directions.”
“Master, in that case, I know the general area, so I don’t think we’ll get lost.”
Mariel’s addition was also attractive.
Considering the fact that they could also go sightseeing in the capital and visit other shops, it seemed even better.
However, the possibility of it being more expensive meant that even if they paid the same amount, they would be buying a lower-quality product.
If he wanted to buy really good quality products, he would either have to spend a lot of money, or there was a possibility that he wouldn’t be able to buy the products at all.
Also, going to a busy and unfamiliar place would inevitably increase the possibility of getting into trouble.
All of these have their pros and cons, so it’s hard to choose.
“In the end, I think these are the three options I can suggest.
“It was really easy to understand, so thank you.”
“I’m glad I could help.”
He thanked William, who nodded and smiled broadly.
He was very grateful for his attitude of taking the time to help him even if it wouldn’t lead to sales for him.
Wataru drank some tea for a while and tried to collect his thoughts.
But when he saw Aire holding her breath and waiting for Wataru to speak, he realized that he had overlooked something important.
He had not asked Aire, who was about to become the owner, how she felt about it.
“Hey, Aire, which one do you think is best? Tell me your thoughts.”
“Hanyanyanya…?”
Aire, who had been asked the question, let out a stunned voice, perhaps because she had not expected it.

A several days-long travel seems unwise to attempt empty-handed, right? Weapons’ worth lies not only in their actual use, but as demonstration of deterrence as well. Looking like an easy mark will bring only trouble.

The only thing that annoys me about this novel is the author’s casual jumping from first to third person in sentences.
