Chapter 21 – Introduction to Maso

The next day, as planned, Wataru and the others went to Maso’s slave house.

As usual, there was a gatekeeper in front of the store, but he must have remembered Wataru’s face.

He let them through immediately.

Once inside, they were greeted by the always intimidating slave trader Maso.

“Oh, aren’t you the customer who came here through an introduction from the Welcome Trading Company the other day? What brings you here today?”

“I have a question about Aire.”

“Is there a problem with our product?”

“No, it’s not that. I’m very happy with both of them.”

“I see. They’re all nicely dressed. I’m glad you take such good care of them.”

“Um, well… I’ve received a letter from William-san, so could you take a look at it?”

“I understand.”

When she says that he is taking care of them, Wataru is embarrassed and can’t find the words to say.

He wants to end the conversation for now, so he hands the letter to Maso, who quickly checks the contents and nods several times.

She must have understood the situation.

The doubt was gone from Maso’s face.

Then, to quickly resolve the next question, she took some documents from a shelf and began to check the contract or customer book.

“Was it the person who bought the Golden Tiger Tribe’s belongings? I wonder who it was. Let me see… just a moment. I’ll check.”

“Please do.”

“Ah, Baron Moye. He’s a famous collector. He collects a wide range of rare items, mostly art.”

“Do you think he would agree to an exchange?”

“Well, he doesn’t have anything in particular that he’s really attached to, so I think something of equal value should do the trick.”

“I see. That’s good.”

That was good news.

If the person in question was extremely attached to swords and such, it was likely that negotiations would have been difficult.

He tapped Aire lightly on the shoulder, who stood anxiously at Wataru’s side.

Aire smiled happily.

Even though they had begun to work on solving the problem, whether they would actually succeed was still unknown, and she must have been worried.

Nevertheless, a possibility had appeared.

“What kind of person is Baron Moye?”

“He is a successful nobleman. He may have a low title, but he runs many farms and is a skilled manager. He uses the money he earns to collect art. He’s not one of our regular customers, though, so I don’t know much more than that. I’m sorry.”

“I see. No, thank you very much. I think I’ll go and deal with him personally.”

“If that’s the case, I’ll write a letter of introduction for you. If you go to the nobles without an introduction, you’ll just be turned away at the gate.”

Maso winks and smiles.

Wataru feels intimidated by her muscular bodybuilder smile but is very grateful for her kindness.

At the same time, he knew that he would have to learn good manners and carefully choose the items he wanted to bargain for so as not to cause trouble for the person who introduced him.

He didn’t have the sensitivity to be rude to someone of noble birth out of the blue.

However, he felt bad about the kindness he received, and he wanted to ask Maso why.

There was no reason for her to go out of her way for a customer who had only bought from her once.

“I know it’s rude of me to say this after you’ve been so kind to me, but why are you going to such lengths to help me?”

“When you’re a slave trader, you see all kinds of customers. When you buy a slave, you buy him to be useful to you, right?”

“Well, that’s true.”

“But there are also masters who are kind to the slaves they buy. We also welcome customers who don’t treat the slaves they buy badly. Remember that, okay?”

“I understand. Thank you very much!”

“If you ever need more, come back. I’ll have some of my best girls ready for you.”

“I’ll use them then. Also, if I have anyone else I want to introduce, I’ll introduce them here.”

“That’s enough. See you again.”

They left the shop, escorted by Maso.

He walked down the street, staring at the envelope Maso had given him.

Since Mariel and Aire had dressed up nicely, the stares of the people on the street had become even more intense than before.

“Do you know where Baron Moye’s territory is, Mariel?”

“Yes. I told you that this town is located below the royal capital, right? Baron Moye’s territory is about five days southeast from here. It’s a very important area for grain and livestock production.”

“I’m just wondering, but are barons really that profitable?”

“The title of nobility and one’s wealth are not really related.”

“Really? But I thought the higher the nobility rank, the more land they would have.”

“That is not necessarily the case. How well you can manage your territory, whether you have resources to sell, and whether you can produce special goods or engage in river trade are more important.”

“You know a lot.”

“I studied at the academy because I wanted to manage my territory as well as possible.”

There were many poor, landless nobles in Japan during the Warring States period, so this does not seem to be an absolute rule.

“Does Mariel know Baron Moye?”

“I met him at dinner parties and such. My family was very poor, so I didn’t have much contact with the wealthy Baron Moye.”

Mariel’s expression always darkens when she talks about her family.

Being reduced to slavery, it seems that her family’s situation was not very good.

However, it was also important to find out if Mariel had met Baron Moye, as it would be difficult to deal with any problems that might arise in the future if he did not know.

“In that case, I think we should start preparing some collectibles that Baron Moye would like.”

“He is a wealthy collector, so I think he has a very discerning eye.”

“Master… is everything okay?”

“Aire, leave it to me. I’ll definitely find a way to make it work.”

The world is completely different.

Even if he’s dealing with a noble, there must be a lot of things that Baron Moye has never seen before.

If that’s the case, the things he needs to do will become clear.

“First, we need to find something worth selling to make some Japanese yen!”

There’s no point in waving an empty sleeve.

Buying the items to exchange also requires money, and while there’s no problem with the money from the other world, his savings in Japanese yen were getting pretty tight.

He hadn’t worked since he bought the two girls, and his expenses were piling up.

He needed to earn money quickly to make a living and find a way to earn a regular income.
