Chapter 93 – Day 38 of Exploration

Sylvia woke me in the middle of the night, and we slowly emerged from the cave.

I saw Hel lying by the campfire.

“Did something happen last night? I heard you making some noise.”

“I-I-I was doing muscle training. Hel was teaching Lipa how to do elf-style muscle training, but it seems she used magic without realizing it, and blood gushed from all over her body.”

“Is she okay?”

“A-a-ask her yourself. I’ll wake Chel up.”

I wanted to leave for the Cliff Garuda before dawn, but I was worried about Hel’s condition.

“What, are you pushing yourself too hard?”

I went to Hel’s side and asked.

“I’m sorry. No, I thought I was just exercising my muscles. I think I’ll be okay because Sylvia gave me a healing potion. Jennifer was really mad at me, too.”

She sat up and apologized.

“She’s a priest, after all.”

“I thought it wouldn’t be a problem since you seem to be able to use magic, but it seems you’re still bound by magic.”

Hel had already made a cloak of rock crocodiles. Chel had pointed out that she was using magic without realizing it, so perhaps her sense of danger regarding magic had faded.

“Is there a way to break the spell?”

“Either by removing the skin along with the tattoo or by breaking the magic circle with a branding iron. Either way, if I get hurt in a way that breaks the magic circle, it should be designed to make my heart shrink.”

Hel pointed to her chest.

“By the way, what kind of magic did you use?”

“It was a simple one that used my own body weight. It’s similar to the magic control Makyo does.”

“Am I controlling magic power?”

“Well, it’s not magic because it doesn’t have a name, right? No, that’s not what I mean. I can’t explain it now.”

Hel put her hand to her mouth and began to think. “Is it a difference in concept? If the elves haven’t figured it out, it’s not magic? Forget the nomina. It’s a function, not a law. Anyway, I need to build up my muscles.” She began to mutter to herself.

“You’re back to normal. You should rest.”

“Hmm? Oh, I’m fine. The healing potion made from the herbs of the demonic land heals quickly. More importantly, I can feel my magic power being used…”

As she said this, blood dripped from Hel’s nose.

“Your nose is bleeding. You should rest a little longer.”

I forced Hel to lie down and talk with Chel, who had woken up.

“Is it true that Hel has done something unusual?”

Chel, who had been awakened by Sylvia, also seemed worried, and her usual accent had disappeared.

“Yes, it looks like she used magic without realizing it. Please take a look at her.”

Chel applied a healing potion to Hel, who was sleeping with a mumbling expression on her face.

“That won’t do. Hel is under a curse. Her body is fine, but her curiosity about magic seems to be unstoppable.”

Chel explained after the diagnosis. It seems that Hel is absorbed in her research when she sleeps.

“I see. Sylvia, I’m sorry, but while we’re gone, please take care of the demon land. Apart from Sylvia, there’s nothing left but a bunch of weirdos.”

“E-e-eh~…”

Sylvia, who had suddenly been thrust into the role of acting Margrave, looked miserable as she replied.

“If you get fed up, take Lipa and run away to the army training facility.”

“W-w-will do.”

Finally, we left a worried-looking Sylvia behind and headed for the desert.

“Are you sure it’s okay?”

Chel asked as we walked through the pitch-black forest.

“I don’t think she’s going to die.”

“I know, but…”

“Jennifer was really angry, and everyone is indebted to Hel, so I don’t think they’ll just abandon her.”

Chel nodded and agreed, “That’s true.

The plants attack us from time to time, but both Chel and I can fight them off with magic or magic-infused fists. The only important thing we have with us is the letter. We have no luggage to slow us down, so it’s easy to move around.

We left for the desert before the eastern sky began to turn white.

We stopped soon after we started walking.

“Hmm? Is it hard?”

“The desert sand is hard. Maybe there’s a lot of moisture today.”

We continued through the hard desert, watching out for flash floods. By the time we saw the chains, the sky had finally turned white.

The sand around us was rusty and damp, and it smelled strongly of monster blood. There were no monster corpses lying around, but it seemed like the blood and rain had fallen and flowed somewhere nearby.

“Was there a massacre?”

“Maybe. Should we check it out or take a detour?”

If we take the detour, it will take a lot of time, but considering the danger ahead, it’s okay to take the detour.

“Either way, it’s better to know what happened, so let’s go.”

“I guess so.”

We agreed and continued, but no matter how far we went, we couldn’t find out what had happened.

There were no traces left except for the blood that had soaked into the ground in a wide area near the chains. Neither of us could find any trace of the monster’s body or any sign of a struggle.

We guessed that the golem had probably killed the monster pack, but the sudden sandstorm buried the bloodstains in the sand.

We took shelter in a nearby dune. After a light breakfast, we set out for our original destination, the Cliff Garuda.

As the sun rose high in the sky and the temperature rose, we took another break. We took turns sleeping. When the sun began to set, we got up and fought the monsters that attacked us.

While fighting the duck monster flying in the sky, which was as big as a house, Chel plucked its feathers and roasted it whole with magic.

“Since it’s a desert, it’s better to have more food, right?

“Well, that’s true, but… it’s rare to see duck monsters in the desert.”

She cut the duck meat into a size that was easy to carry.

“…it might not be from the demonic land.”

“Then where do you think they came from? It’s still a long way to the Cliff Garuda.”

“Because ducks can fly long distances.”

“So you’re saying that monsters from the Cliff Garuda are coming to the demonic land…”

Anyway, the meat of the Cliff Garuda monsters doesn’t sell for much, so we ended up eating it ourselves. We buried the bones and heads in the sand.

We kept running and finally reached the relay point, the ruins, just as the sun was setting.

In the ruins, there were monsters of all sizes, including snakes, spiders, and lizards, that lived in the desert, all of which were larger than humans. When we left the ruins earlier, they were full of monster corpses, but all the corpses had been eaten, and there were no bones left.

It seems that the desert monsters have turned the ruins into a feeding ground.

As we approached the ruined tower, the monsters seemed to be watching from behind the buildings as if they were on guard. Maybe this is their territory, but we also want to sleep here tonight.

The snake monster showed its fangs and threatened us, so we hit it, and it hid somewhere.

“What should we do?

“Should we kill them all? We’ve been running since this morning, so we’re tired. Why don’t we just take care of the ones attacking us? I don’t think they’ll attack us as much up here.”

“Yeah, I get it.”

Whether the monsters in the ruins were full or not, or whether they just weren’t interested in us, they didn’t attack us when we set up our base with the water balloon tent or when we ate duck meat.

As I was about to fall asleep, Chel called out to me, “They’re here!”

What?”

I wondered if the golems had attacked us, so I left the tent and looked out from the collapsed tower and saw a flock of strange birds flying in from the south. They all had wings, and it seemed they had flown in from the Cliff Garuda. Whether to rest their wings or to sleep, the flock of monsters flew through the sky as if guided by something and then landed in the ruins.

Naturally, the desert monsters that live in the ruins pounce on the prey that has come down from the sky. A battle breaks out between the desert monsters, each trying to get to the prey first. A rain of blood falls upon the ruins. The prey, which came all the way from the Cliff Garuda, disappears with the dust, leaving no bone behind.

The heat of the battle fills the air around the ruins, and the howling of sand coyotes can be heard from the distant sand dunes. Sandworms and desert salamanders also came, as if to say that there were such monsters in the desert.

This ruin, once used as a trading post and a place for people to live, has become a meeting place for monsters.

“Could it be because of us?”

“Maybe it’s the migration season.”

We watched the monsters for a while, then took turns sleeping.
