Chapter 6 – Warehouse

The real estate office William took them to didn’t look like a real estate office at first glance.

It was hard to tell from the house logo on the signboard, but if you didn’t know, you probably wouldn’t have been able to tell on your own.

“(It’s a surprisingly good advertising medium to draw floor plans of properties on the front…)”

“This way. They’re a well-known agency around here, and they have a wide reach.”

“I hope we can settle this in one go.”

“I think you’ll probably be fine. I’ve already told them the terms in advance, so they have a list of candidates ready for you. Hello, I’m William.”

“Oh, you’re from the Welcome Trading Company! Is this the one?”

“Yes, this is our customer, Wataru-sama.”

“I am Wataru. I look forward to working with you today.”

“I am Goreway. It’s a pleasure to meet you. Let’s start right away and take a look around.”

Goreway is a man of about fifty years of age, and he speaks very quickly.

His hairline is very thin, and he is very overweight.

He is either nervous or efficient because he immediately pulls out some documents and starts moving around as soon as he greets everyone.

Since William introduces him, he must not be a terrible person.

Goreway leads the way, walking quickly.

It was a road that Wataru had walked many times before, and he recognized the scenery.

It was very close to the shrine.

If he pushed a cart from the shrine to the warehouse, he could come and go without attracting much attention.

“The rent is three silver coins per month.”

“That’s cheap. Is that the going rate?”

“Yes. It’s quite spacious for a warehouse, and it’s very cheap. The only drawback is that the loading dock is a little narrow. It’s not on a main street, and it’s also a little far from the business and industrial districts.”

“Is it possible to bring in carts and wagons?”

“No problem. This way, please.”

The entrance to the warehouse was surrounded by a high wall, and a fence kept horses off the property.

The door opened after the lock was clicked.

When the double doors, which were wide enough for a carriage to enter, opened, the spacious interior came into view.

Wataru and the others went inside to take a look around.

As expected, it really is huge.

There are no shelves in it right now, which probably makes it look even bigger.

It’s about four meters high, ten meters wide, and twenty-five meters deep.

There is a very small room in the front that looks like a waiting room.

This is probably where they keep the office staff and security guards on standby.

Aire was checking the thickness of the walls by tapping on them and looking around to see if there were any other entrances or windows besides the main entrance, and she was doing her job well.

She was probably judging based on whether the safety of the people she was protecting could be maintained rather than whether the building could function as a warehouse.

“Hmm, it seems like this place is big enough, but I’ll ask Mariel and Aire for their opinion just in case. How is the security here?”

“It’s not bad, since it’s on the patrol route of the guards. But it’s not close to the barracks, so it’s not great either.”

“I don’t think there’s anything special to worry about. The walls are high enough and the view isn’t bad, so if someone tries to break in, I think we’ll notice.”

It seemed that the two of them were worried about security.

The Welcome Trading Company always had a large number of employees inside, and the slave trader Masso’s shop had guards posted.

With no obvious security devices in place, the state of public safety must be a concern.

Perhaps he should get a security system as well.

“So, regarding the length of the contract, if you pay for a year in advance, we will reduce the monthly rent by one month. What will you do?”

“Oh, I’ll pay for five years in advance.”

“Huh? I-I understand.”

“Since I’m often away, it would be quite inconvenient if you came to collect the rent every month.”

“I see…”

Goreway looked at Wataru with eyes that saw a mysterious person, but he was satisfied with his words for now.

Since there are many cases of disputes due to non-payment, there is no reason to refuse someone who pays well.

He must be one of their best customers.

“Mariel, would you please pay for this?”

“Very well. If you’re going to leave more things to me in the future, it might be a good idea to have a seal made as well.”

“I see. I’ll start making preparations for that as well. Now that we’ve rented a warehouse, I’ll make another list of things we need.”

When asked to sign the rental contract, Wataru made another signature that no one else could read.

From now on, it would be necessary to prepare for the company to continue doing business.

In that sense, it was a very meaningful expenditure to have made this first base.

William, who had watched in silence until Wataru’s rental contract was finished, spoke to him as soon as it was over.

“It seems you were able to rent it safely. I will take my leave for today.”

“Ah, thank you for your help in your busy schedule! Thank you very much!”

“Well, I hope we can both find a little more time next time. Now, I’m off to deliver the goods to the nobles. I’ll see you again!”

Seizing the moment to make a profit, William left like the wind.

Watching his hasty return, Wataru felt a mixture of emotions: he wanted to make money but didn’t want to rush off like that.

When his work wasn’t going well and he wasn’t making much money, he worried about wanting more work.

People can be so extravagant, Wataru thought.

  1. If you want more money without more work, there are typically two possible solutions: delegating the work to someone hired for that purpose, or investing in some source of passive income.
