Chapter 14 – Small Shrine

A mysterious structure that connects the Earth to another world.

If one side is a Jizo statue, the other side is a shrine.

Mariel, who has some knowledge of magic, speculates that it might be transfer magic, but the actual situation is unclear.

The morning after they cleaned the Jizo statue, Wataru and the others were about to go through the gate to the other world and start cleaning the shrine.

(If the technology to connect worlds has been established, it wouldn’t be surprising if more people from other worlds came to Earth.)

When you think about it like that, there is a high possibility that this gate uses magic or sorcery or some other theory or logic.

In the end, for now, it can only be called a mysterious power.

(But speaking of mysterious technology and power, I can’t understand all the electrical appliances around me, and I use them because they’re convenient. If I think about it that way, maybe I don’t need to pursue it even if I’m interested in it).

“It’s pretty cool over here, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is. The air is refreshing, so it’s much easier to be comfortable in the shade.”

“I think it would be nice to spend the summer here.”

“Haha, don’t say that. It’s true that it’s cool, but my house is better for things like eating and bathing.”

“It’s convenient because you can take a bath every day just by pushing a button. Sometimes, I still think that Master is a nobleman or a magician from somewhere.”

There is a communal well near the warehouse they rented in Southern Ship Town.

Wataru and the others would fill a bucket with a large amount of water and take it back to the shrine in a cart.

By the way, Aire pushes the cart during this kind of heavy work.

Apparently, Aire’s strength was enough to move it easily, but the sight of a beautiful girl doing heavy work didn’t look good.

“Does Mariel know about this shrine?”

“When I first saw it, I thought it was a shrine to the god of wind and thunder, but it seems to be something else. Especially the condition is not very good, so if we can get rid of the moss, we might be able to find something.”

“I see.”

“I’m sorry I can’t be of more help.”

Mariel bowed her head, but of course, she didn’t know everything.

Wataru waved his hands from side to side and told her not to worry.

“No, it’s okay. If there are any features that can be used as reference points, could you record them and check them next time?”

“There’s also a really small library in Southern Ship Town, so it might be a good idea to check out the town. And then there’s the church.”

“Oh, I remember it worships the Sun God.”

“Yes, it’s been around for a very long time, so they might know something about it.”

“Won’t they get us in trouble for practising a heretical religion?”

“No, they won’t! The religion in this country is polytheism, so every faith is guaranteed.”

“I see…”

He had wanted to bring up this kind of topic before but had never been able to bring himself to say it.

However, as his relationship with the two girls progressed, Wataru realized that he had no knowledge of the other world and that they understood what kind of life he led on Earth.

He was now able to speak freely about sensitive subjects.

They stopped the cart in front of the shrine.

The shrine was quite large and made of stone. The ceiling was made in the style of a traditional Japanese house.

It was covered with moss and so dirty that you couldn’t even see the stone underneath.

Or maybe it wasn’t noticeable, so it was left as it was.

“Okay, then I’ll polish it. The difference with the Jizo statue is that there doesn’t seem to be any trash lying around.”

“That’s right. It looks like most of the dirt is mud and moss.”

“Leave it to me!”

Splash, scrub, scrub, scrub.

They scrub the top with a scrub brush and the bottom with a brush, then rinse.

They also use detergent on the parts that are particularly dirty.

There were a lot of places that were stuck so tightly that they couldn’t be removed easily.

“Hey, I see something!”

“Wow, it’s a smooth stone. It feels like polished marble. It’s old, but it’s so hard that it hasn’t deteriorated at all.”

“It’s a special building material you can see in ancient temples and such.”

“It’s so smooth! So smooth…”

“Hey, what’s with that look? You’re not trying to say something unnecessary, are you?”

“Nfufufu, Mariel, it’s so smooth.”

“Hey!”

“What on earth! I just said your skin is smooth!”

“Hmm, and there’s something carved into it. It looks like a pattern or a sign…”

Wataru ignored the antics of Mariel and Aire in the shrine and concentrated on what was in front of him.

It seemed that the object being worshipped there was a person.

The clothes the person was wearing were very detailed, but the face was only vaguely carved and hard to recognize.

There are clear traces of carving on the stone, which has been cleaned of dirt.

Judging from the location, there was no doubt that some words were written on it.

However, Wataru had no idea what they were.

“What kind of words are written here?”

“I can’t read them.”

“I don’t know anything like that either. Maybe they’re words from the time of the old gods.”

“I think this shrine might be that old. I’ll take a picture of it with my smartphone and write some notes later.

There are many different types of writing that were only used in ancient times, such as the oracle bone script, cuneiform, and runes.

It was thought that words had power, and it was not surprising that they actually had some kind of magical power.

Wataru took many photos of the shrine with his smartphone and saved them.

Maybe someone has information about it.

Today’s cleaning didn’t clean everything in one go, but it did remove the main dirt to a certain extent.

“Well, what we don’t know, we don’t know. Once we’re back, showered and changed, let’s go to Welcome Trading and see if they have any clothes that will keep us cool.”

“I’m in!”

“I’d like to get some too.”

Even though they were cool, the three of them had worked up quite a sweat from all the hard work they’d done cleaning.
