Chapter 114 – Day 6 of the Strategy Life

Last night, I received some relief supplies, such as vegetables, at the training facility, and then I went straight back to the demonic land.

By the time I entered demonic land, the sun had already set, so I decided to spend the night in a cave.

I called out to the elves at the trading hut and asked them what they needed. As usual, they seemed to have trouble defeating slime and often ran out of magic power, so I fetched them some water from the stream. I also hunted a blue snake and a golden bat in the forest of demonic land and shared the spoils with them.

“Thank you!”

“Good luck, don’t die!”

After saying that, I crossed the stream and continued through the pitch-black forest of the demonic land. I could find my way back to the cave house even with my eyes closed, so there was no problem.

I picked some berries along the way and went home, wondering if the dwarf magician named Park had also wandered through the forest at midnight a hundred years ago. I had a big dinner and went to bed.

I woke up at sunrise and washed my face in the swamp. Even though I only stayed one night, I felt a little lonely because there was no one to say “good morning” to.

I’m sure that a hundred years ago, Park would have lived a similar life after leaving his friends. I was alone, too, until I found Chel, but I don’t think I ever felt lonely because I was so desperate to stay alive.

I put a sign on the ground where I buried Park’s body that read “Magic Tool Maker Park” and made my way to the northern sanctuary.

As long as I knew the direction, I wouldn’t get lost. There were no roads to begin with, so there was little choice but to keep going.

Monsters and plants rarely attacked me when I ran. In fact, they moved away when I approached. Maybe they avoided me before I noticed.

I would deal with the monsters that showed open hostility by hitting them. The monsters that used poison or magic didn’t come near me.

I would just run leisurely from the morning.

I thought about Park again.

“The only thing I regret is that I couldn’t solve the mystery of this demonic land…”

That was the last sentence Park wrote in his notebook.

He didn’t call it a dungeon, and he didn’t call it Midgard. Park called it a demonic land.

It probably hasn’t changed much in the last hundred years.

Park must have gone to Midgard as well. He had separated from his companions and pursued the ‘Mystery of the Demonic Land’ alone. Maybe he left the giant magic beast and the dungeon to Paul and the others.

There are many secrets in the demonic land. Whether it’s a powerful magical beast, an attacking plant, the way of life of Yggdrasil 1000 years ago, or a magic circle of time magic.

I wonder what secret he was pursuing in the cave to the west? If I write it down, I might be able to understand the secret that Park had.

Before I knew it, the forest had turned into a coniferous forest, and I could see a rocky area.

I looked at the sky and headed for the place where the earth wall was floating. I thought Chel was training there.

Before noon, I reached the shelter at the bottom of the well.

“Welcome back.”

“I’m home. Jennifer, I’ve brought some supplies from the training facility. Please check them over.”

“Okay.”

Jennifer took the backpack from me and began to check the contents.

“I-I’ve made a variety of knife handles. Please use the one that feels good in your hand.”

Sylvia had prepared a number of knife handles for me. Many of them were made of monster bones.

Hel and Lipa are currently searching for the place where the giant magical beast appears.

After a quick lunch of dried meat and bread, I start training with Chel to climb the giant magical beast.

“How are you doing? Have you managed to get up there yet?”

“If nothing else, we could use the earthen walls as a foothold, but considering the fact that there are strong winds and vibrations, it’s going to be quite difficult.”

Chel explains as I climb up the earthen walls, which are taller than the trees in the forest.

“Sylvia gave me a knife, so I’ll try to use it. Chel, try using wind magic on me.”

“Yeah, it’s okay. Hel made the staff for me.”

Chel was already holding the staff.

I created a blade of magic from the handle of the knife and stabbed it into the earthen wall, lifting my body.

Zan!

The blade was too sharp, and the wall was cut vertically.

“What are you going to do with that?”

“Would a stake be better than a blade?”

I turned the magic blade into a stake and stabbed it into the earthen wall again to lift myself up. This time, the wall didn’t break, and I was able to climb up the wall using only the strength of my arms.

I put my magic power into the handle of one of the knives to make a stake, and then I stuck it into the wall. I cut the magic power from the handle of the other knife, lifted my arm, put my magic power back into the handle to make a stake, and stuck it into the wall. It was as if I was crawling along the wall. Even if a storm blew, I was close to the wall, so it didn’t affect me that much. Even if there was an earthquake, as long as I put my magic power into the stakes, it wouldn’t affect me that much.

Chel attacked me with earth magic and water magic, but I was able to parry them. I can climb the earth wall for now, but it’s still just a wall. The giant magical beast is alive.

“You climbed all the way to the top, but you look quite dissatisfied.”

Chel, who said this, also looked dissatisfied.

“No, I haven’t seen the giant magical beast’s feet, so I don’t know what to say.”

“You climbed up the cliff, and you say that?”

“If the stakes made of magic didn’t go into the giant magical beast’s skin, it would be the end. Besides, it’s probably not a clean wall like this, but it might be scratched or slimy with sweat. The footsteps were so loud that you’d need earplugs to climb up.”

“The footsteps were loud, that’s true. But what other way is there to climb up?”

“Hmm, how about running?”

“Even if you keep asking questions like that…”

“No, if you can walk on water, can’t you walk on walls? I thought you could do something like that.”

“That was because of the buoyancy. I wonder if you can do the same thing on walls. If you use magic to change the properties of the soles of both feet alternately… Can you do something that dexterous?”

“We still have time, so why don’t we give it a try?”

We released magic power from the soles of our feet and gave it adhesive power. We tried running on the wall, one foot at a time, alternating.

Bam!

Bam! Bam! Bam!

We kept falling off the back of our heads onto the floor, and it wasn’t working at all.

“We’re totally out of balance and stuff.”

“My head is spinning; let’s stop for a while.”

It was already evening.

Hel and Lipa had also returned, so we made a fire outside and had dinner.

Chel used earth magic to make an impromptu oven and baked bread.

“The supplies were all there.”

Jennifer reported.

“I wonder if the vegetables will spoil?”

“I think they’ll be fine, but should we replace them with pickles from the Kingdom of Meiju?”

“Let’s do it half and half. There were seeds in them, right?”

“Yes, there were different kinds, from spring planting to fall planting.”

“Then that’s fine…”

However, there was something a little worrying, but it wasn’t a good thing, so I didn’t say anything and made soup with the wild herbs I had picked nearby.

“Is something wrong?”

Jennifer asked worriedly as I stared into the fire and thought.

“No, just a little. How did it go with the route of the giant magical beast?”

I asked Hel and Lipa.

“We don’t know the exact location yet, but we know that it moves from north to south. The plants in the demonic land grow fast, but there are still traces of the crushed trees and the magical beast, so we’re following them.”

“The footsteps are far apart, so it’s quite hard to find them. There are also a lot of broken trees around the route we’re taking, so I had to fly up into the trees and watch from the sky to find them. It also takes a long time because the feet are so big.”

It seems that Lipa also had a hard time.

“Maybe we should look underground.”

“Yes, it would be a great help if you could help us with that as well. How was it for you up there?”

“I was able to climb up using the stakes, but walking along the walls was a bit difficult.”

“If you hurry, you should be able to make up for it.”

“But the giant magical beast only appears for one day, right? I think it’s a race against time.”

“So you want to climb up and explore the dungeon on top of the giant magical beast as soon as possible, right?”

“Yes, and not only the dungeon but if there are people living on the top of the magical beast, I want to hear their stories, you know? Besides…”

No matter how many times I think about it, I still feel uncomfortable, but I don’t know how to explain it.

“S-S-Since we don’t even know if they need aid, shouldn’t we expect nothing in return?”

Sylvia offered a helping hand.

“That’s true, but… isn’t there something strange about that?”

“Makyo is always strange.”

“That’s not what I mean…”

“What are you worried about?”

“Are you talking about how we who live in a primitive way are supporting those with a highly advanced civilization?”

“That’s strange too, but… isn’t it strange how P.J. and the others acted 100 years ago?”

I added more wood to the fire.

“P.J. and the others went to Midgard, right? They must have learned technology and history from that ancient, highly advanced civilization. But nothing was passed on to the kingdom of Estinia.”

“You’re right, you’re probably right.”

“Pharrel taught Cliff Garuda to fly, and Paul was so in love with Ka-Zira that he tried to build a dungeon for her. Ka-zira was so sick that she turned into a zombie, so maybe she was infected with a disease. What about Park and Peter?”

“I think Park just kept making magic tools, didn’t he?”

“Maybe he just didn’t want to pass on his skills to future generations. In his farewell message, it seems like he was pursuing the ‘Mystery of the Demonic Land.'”

“It might have something to do with his race. Dwarves are rare, and engineers are even more in demand. Maybe he didn’t like that.”

“Even in the Elf Kingdom, dwarves are persecuted.”

“So he had no place to go, so he stayed in the demonic land and continued his research? Still, isn’t Peter a little strange? Maybe Peter was a reversion to his ancestors, so he had dragon blood. And yet he didn’t leave anything to his own kind. He just left everything to the Guardian of Time.”

When I said this, everyone fell silent.

“To know the history of Midgard is the long-cherished wish of the Estinia royal family. It must have been a long-cherished wish for Peter as well. And just as he wished, he went to Midgard with his friends and learned the truth. But it’s strange that he didn’t leave anything behind, isn’t it?”

“I think he decided that it was enough for him to be the only one of his kind to know the truth.”

Hel said to herself and fell into thought.

“Well, it could also mean that you shouldn’t approach them carelessly.”

“Even the Foolish King told us not to go to Yggdrasil.”

“I wonder what the people in the giant magical beast see of the demonic land where civilization has disappeared?”

“Maybe the people of Midgard were trying to get P.J. and the others to do something for them?”

It seems like everyone has their own questions.

“What we can think of is that the people of Midgard could be an enemy to us who live in the present. If they’re dying, we’ll help them, but they might take advantage of our goodwill. They’re a difficult enemy to judge.”

“We can’t trust them easily.”

The operation to land on the giant magical beast might be a battle that requires a lot of thinking.

I thought this while looking at the leather bag in the shape of an egg.

  1. What’s driving that magic beast to wander? To and fro between its foraging grounds and water hole? Both must be enormous.
