Chapter 115 – Day 7 of the Strategy Life

Before the sun rises over the horizon, I get up and go exploring. I chase the flying monsters and ask them to help me practice riding the giant magical beast. The wall of earth that Chel created in the sky is predictable, so I decided to get the monsters to help me.

“S-should I make the monsters work for me?”

“No, that wouldn’t be good practice, so it’s okay.”

I declined Sylvia’s offer and continued walking through the cold rocks.

My targets are wyverns and death condors.

The death condors will fire instant death magic at me, but I’ll protect myself with the necklace of magic prevention that Hel made for me.

“This is a necklace that prevents magic. Try not to use too much magic.”

“It’s okay. It won’t work if I don’t let them get me in the first place.”

Chel seems confident, but I’m wearing the necklace and also equipped with the King Anaconda chestplate I made earlier.

“Makyo, are you afraid? Even if you get hit by a death spell, the chances of it working are incredibly low.”

“That’s the chance of a death spell outside the demonic land, right? Anything can happen here. Don’t you remember?”

Chel thought for a moment and quickly put on the necklace.

Both wyverns and death condors had built their nests on the steep mountain face. It must be easier to glide through the air with outstretched wings than to flap and fly.

I used the magic power from the handle of the knife Sylvia had made for me to drive the stake into the mountain face and climb up. Chel was still climbing with sticky magic power on the soles of her feet. It was going better than yesterday, but it seemed that switching between magic powers was difficult, and she was slow. I left her alone without saying anything because she’s strong when it comes to such things.

As I approached the nest, the wyverns started to make noise and became suspicious. They attacked me, but I knocked them down with a blow to the head.

When I reached the nest on the cliff, the wyvern attacks intensified. They clawed at me, screamed to scare me off, and tried to grab me with their hind legs, but I punched them all to silence them.

After I had silenced them to some extent, the wyverns retreated to the back of the cave where they lived.

I tied up the unconscious wyverns and their wings with rope and called to Chel, who was down below.

“Hey! Get the water magic ready!”

“Yeesss!”

After hearing the reply, I threw the bound wyverns down.

Chel used her magic to trap the falling wyverns in water balls that absorbed the impact. She slowly lowered them to the ground. She could only carry three of them without causing too much damage.

After she lowered three of them, I also climbed down from the nest and took the wyverns to a place near our base.

I treated the wyverns’ minor injuries with Hel’s healing potion and then woke them up by sticking a branch up their noses as a substitute for a stimulant.

“Gyaaah!”

The wyverns, once awake, didn’t seem to know where they were, but as soon as they saw us, they attacked.

As expected, both Chel and I were wide awake enough to avoid the wyvern’s biting attacks, even though they weren’t flying.

After dodging for a while, the wyverns began to move their wings as if they were going to jump. However, they weren’t very good at taking off, and their hind legs didn’t quite leave the ground.

Flap, flap, flap.

Judging by the dust rising into the air, it looks like it’s about to take off, but it’s probably wary of us and has lost its timing.

“This won’t be good for training.”

Since it was annoying, I grabbed the wyvern’s hind legs and threw it into the air with all my might. The wyvern spun around in the air. It adjusted its posture, turned around, and tried to return to its nest as it was.

Finally, the training began.

“Jennifer, please.”

“Got it.”

Jennifer set up the slime wall parallel to the floor. I jumped onto the slime wall and used its elasticity to leap into the air.

I jumped far above the flying wyvern and moved through the air. This was a training exercise to see if I could catch the wyvern.

I tried to attract the wyvern by interfering with the force of the wind and getting closer to it all at once, but I gained too much momentum, and my elbow and foot ended up embedded in the wyvern’s belly.

When I hit the ground, the wyvern was unconscious, with bones sticking out of its wings and spitting bubbles.

If it had the mass of a giant magical beast, it wouldn’t have had much of an effect, but I’m sure the people of Midgard would be angry.

“Are you even trying?”

“It’s hard to control magic power. And wind power is different, too.”

I used magic to diagnose the wyvern, put its bones back in place, and gave it a recovery potion. Even if I stuck a branch in its mouth to cheer it up, it wouldn’t be able to get up for a while.

Next, I trained Chel. I used Jennifer’s wall of slime to jump into the air, and then I used wind magic to slowly approach the wyvern in the air and aim at it.

“It moves really well.”

“But won’t the enemy catch it like that?”

As Jennifer said, Chel was knocked down by the wyvern.

“One more time!”

Chel, who had fallen to the ground, quickly got up and used the slime wall again to return to the sky in one fell swoop.

This time, she was floating an ice magic ball. It looked like she wanted to move the ice ball to a foothold and catch the wyvern, but the strong wind blew the ice ball far away.

“Should I use the whip?”

Hel, who had returned from the investigation and was watching the situation, gave me the whip she had used in her training before. It had a sticky substance on it, with a honey ant magic stone attached to the end.

I tried it by jumping into the air and wrapping the whip around the wyvern’s leg, but the wyvern’s stance collapsed, and it fell, spinning around. We had another badly injured one.

“It’s pretty heavy, isn’t it?”

“If only there was a foothold…”

I brushed the dust off my body.

“Wouldn’t it be good if Makyo-san and the others could use the slime wall as well?”

Lipa said something reasonable.

“Slime Wall is a technique I learned the hard way!”

“But it’s not impossible, right? Teach me the trick.”

“No, if you just need a foothold, you can use Makyo’s Magic Cube. But it’ll be blown away by the strong wind.”

“I see. And I can’t use my flying broom either.”

The storm that occurs when the giant magic beast appears unexpectedly is troublesome.

“H-how about some food?!”

I was lost in thought when Sylvia called me.

It was already past noon. Neither Chel nor I had eaten breakfast. My stomach suddenly started rumbling, so I decided to put the training aside for now and take a break to eat.

“How did the investigation go?”

I asked Hel and the others, who were investigating the place where the giant magical beast had appeared while eating a fixed meal of meat and wild herbs.

“Maybe because they know the monsters are coming soon, things like treants and other slow-moving monsters have started to move. Also, there are some plants that are dying out of season.”

“They’re more used to the giant magical beast than we are, so let’s keep watching.”

“Oh, did Makyo and the others not catch the death condor?”

“Only the wyvern today. Still, it’s difficult to move in the air.”

When I said that, Lipa asked Hel, “Don’t we need to talk about the target?”

“What do you mean by target?”

“Oh, how far has Makyo learned magic?”

“No, I haven’t learned much. I only learned from Chel when she came to the demonic land.”

“I don’t think he understands the system. I think he knows almost nothing about the classification.”

Chel answered for me.

“I see. Then let me explain. Do you know that there are some spells that target a specific area and others that target a specific person?”

Hel explained, and Chel supplemented by making fireballs float in the air and shooting fire arrows at me.

“I kind of understand. I think mental magic and things like that are aimed at specific people, right?”

“Well, no, there are also spells that can be used to hypnotize a group of people, so it’s not that simple…”

“Leaving aside the unusual cases, it’s better to continue with the explanation.”

“That’s right. Mental magic directed at a specific person is targeted.”

“Yes, I understand that.”

Probably because there is a difference in our knowledge, I won’t ask too many unnecessary questions.

“So the magic circles we have found so far are all aimed at a specific person, right?”

“Is that right?”

“Yes, for example, the magic circle that speeds up time and withers leaves and the magic circle that holds the concrete in place are both aimed at a single target. The magic circle that is probably built into the giant magic beast is also aimed at the giant magic beast as a target.”

Hel drew a magic circle on the ground and scattered leaves on it, and when Chel used her magic power, one of the leaves withered.

“So when the ancients used it, the spell needed a target.”

“I see.”

“On the other hand, it means that you can shift the spell to target yourself.”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“Even if someone in the giant magical beast attacks you with a time spell, you can deal with it if you have a substitute ready.”

“Oh, I see.”

“This necklace can also work as a substitute, but it might be better to have a few of them.”

Hel said, pointing to the necklace that protects against magic.

“So this is a countermeasure in case the inhabitants of Midgard are the enemy…”

“It’s just a hypothetical situation, but it’s better to be prepared, right?”

“That is true.”

“The death condor’s instant death magic is also a targeted attack, not a ranged attack. Lamia’s petrifying magic is probably the same.”

“We should train for that. What if they use other magic?”

“I don’t think it will be a problem as long as you kill the guardian spiders.”

“B-but isn’t it better to train in case there’s more than one enemy?”

“I suppose so.”

After all, I was paired with Chel and trained to catch the arrows fired from Hel’s crossbow.

“Since the necklace doesn’t work, try not to use magic as much as possible.”

“That’s a tall order.”

As darkness falls, the black-painted arrows become harder to see. However, if you get close enough, you can grab them. Chel’s magic is also easy to read because her feints are so obvious.

I’ll be on the defensive, but if I lure her while she’s moving, she’ll get caught in the exploding magic circle I’ve drawn on the ground and turn the attack against her.

“Jennifer, I’m going to lift the ban on mental magic, so attack me and see. You’re not bad enough.”

“Are you complimenting me?”

“I am complimenting you. Cunning is the most important thing in the demonic land.”

I don’t know how much preparation I need to do, but there are so many unknowns that I feel it’s not enough.
