Chapter 23 – Medicinal Plants

(Good grief, they’re so forward.)

Wataru regretted coming home to his grandparents’ house for a while.

His grandparents had raised him since he was a child, and they were very important people to him.

Even after he had grown up and started living on his own, they had taken care of him, sent him food, and so on.

Because they knew all his good and bad points, he felt comfortable at home, but on the other hand, he felt embarrassed to bring home someone he had a relationship with.

Still, he can’t just say that they’re both slaves he bought, and he can’t say that they’re from another world.

If he tries hard enough, he might be able to convince them in the end, but it seems like it would take a lot of effort.

After filling their stomachs with souvenirs, Wataru and Toru went to the fields.

Since the fields were right next to the house, it didn’t take them long to get there.

Although it wasn’t the size you’d expect from a commercial farm, the field, which was a little too big for a private farmer, was well-tended and beautiful.

The lush green leaves and the eggplants and tomatoes were all growing large.

Although there were a few clouds in the sky, it was still hot as hell during the day of the Obon holiday.

Nevertheless, Wataru went out into the field to talk to Toru because their conversation was about something that others couldn’t hear.

“So, what’s the story?”

“Oh, there’s a seedling I want you to raise for me. It’s this one.”

“What kind of seedling?”

“I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s a plant used for medical purposes.”

“Another rare one.”

“It’s from abroad, so I have no idea if it will grow well in Japan, but I want you to try it.”

Wataru’s request was to grow a medicinal plant that he had brought from another world.

When Wataru handed the seedlings to Toru, Toru stared at them with interest.

When he asked the Pharmaceutical Guild if he could get his hands on some medicinal plant seedlings or seeds, he found out that they could provide both.

However, the effectiveness of wild plants and cultivated plants seems slightly different, and natural products are said to be more effective.

No one knows whether it can be cultivated at all or how it will change in terms of soil and weather conditions in another world or due to the effects of fertilizers.

On top of that, even if the tools are available in this world, it is not known if the same thing can be made, so there is a lot that is not understood.

There is no choice but to try each thing one by one, but if it works, there is a possibility that a healing potion made on Earth can be made.

“Grandpa, I don’t want you to say anything about this.”

“That’s fine, but what is it? Is it dangerous?”

“It has nothing to do with the Washington Convention or marijuana, so don’t worry about it. I told you it was for medical use. It’s very valuable, and if it works, it could be worth a lot of money.”

“Speaking of which, there was a problem with strawberries and grapes being stolen overseas, wasn’t there?”

“That’s right. I don’t want it to get out by accident, and I don’t want to reveal the source.”

“Okay, I understand. I’ll keep it a secret.”

Toru was a family member, and he trusted his character.

He was retired and not worried about money.

He was the most suitable person to ask to grow the medicinal plants for the potion, the outcome of which was still completely unpredictable.

He was much more trustworthy than asking some random farmer.

“By the way, how much money will it bring in?”

“Well, it might be worth 10,000 yen per plant.”

“What? 10,000 yen? Can it even cure cancer?”

“I don’t know about that. Anyway, it’s a plant that could be used in advanced medical treatment, so I can only ask someone I can trust.”

When he heard the price, Toru’s eyes widened in surprise.

The selling price is 5 million yen.

Even if you think of it as a cost price, 10,000 yen might be too cheap, but that’s all based on the assumption that the cultivation is successful and the same efficacy can be expected.

If things continue as they are, it’s like counting raccoon dog skins before they’re caught.

“It seems to be a perennial that is fairly resistant to both high and low temperatures. It would help if you could just be careful not to overwater it.”

“I understand. Ten thousand yen…”

“Maybe, just maybe. It might end up as garbage.”

“If it works out, let me make a little profit, too.”

“I’ll think about it then. How about I buy you some sushi from the supermarket?”

“Don’t be silly. I’ll let you treat me to sushi made by a real chef.”

Toru laughed, showing his teeth at Wataru’s bad joke.

They decided to start planting right away.

Wataru took the seedlings and seeds out of the bag Aire had brought, and Toru got a shovel from the storage shed.

Once they had everything ready, they decided to start planting in one corner of the field.

Since they don’t know how much water and fertilizer they will need, they will vary the amounts for each location and write them on labels.

Since these are perennial plants, they won’t worry about the effects of the seasons for now.

They also plan to plant seeds in the fall.

If they succeed in cultivating the medicinal plants, the number of potions distributed in Japan will increase greatly.

Chronic potions are already proving to be very useful for athletes, but acute potions will also be incredibly effective in medical and disaster situations.

It has the potential to revolutionize modern medicine.

There will be a lot of things to do, such as obtaining the necessary permits and setting up production facilities, but the thought that this could be successful made Wataru feel the joy of creating a future where he could change the world in a different way than making money.
