Chapter 33 – The Balance Between Money and Life

The girl’s body was thrown into the air, hit the sidewalk, and rolled around.

The car that had crashed into the wall of a house suddenly reversed, then collided with another car, and then started moving forward again, crashing into the house again.

The driver seemed to be in a state of shock, and his movements were terrifying, making it impossible to predict what he would do next.

The crashed car came to a stop.

Three accidents had happened simultaneously in a matter of seconds.

Wataru stopped his car on the shoulder of the road.

His heart was pounding.

He might have been the one who caused the accident.

There was a possibility that his car could have run over the girl who had been thrown into the air.

He was glad that he had been driving slowly.

As he got out of the car to check on the girl, various thoughts flooded his mind in an instant.

Should he help her?

Would it be wiser to pretend he hadn’t seen anything and drive away?

The girl involved in the accident was probably in critical condition.

She needed medical attention immediately.

Fortunately, he had a potion with him.

If she wasn’t dead, there was a good chance that she could be saved.

“Aire… Is she okay?”

“Yes, she’s alive. But she’s probably hurt her lungs or digestive system.”

“Can she be saved?”

“I want to save her. To be honest, I’m not sure.”

Mariel checked the girl in front of her and asked Wataru.

If they sought help from a third party, the existence of the potion might be revealed.

If they intervened on humanitarian grounds, the risks would be incalculable.

Wataru wasn’t only worried about the potion being discovered.

There was also the possibility that Mariel and Aire’s identities would be questioned, and they could be arrested for illegal entry or overstaying their visas.

Furthermore, the existence of another world might be revealed, which could lead to diplomatic problems.

What he feared most was that he had no idea what the gate between Earth and the other world was.

If it was just a device, that would be fine.

If it was just an object that connected to another place, like an escalator or an elevator.

But what if it was some kind of transcendent being?

On Earth, there is the Jizo statue, and in the other world, there is the shrine.

It’s not impossible that higher beings, such as gods or Buddhas that Wataru can’t perceive, could become angry if they were exposed to the eyes of the majority.

If Wataru is cursed, it’s his own fault for making that decision.

But there are many myths in the world in which the wrath of the gods nearly leads to the extinction of humanity, such as Noah’s Ark in the Bible, the Great Flood in the Epic of Gilgamesh, and the Popol Vuh in Mayan mythology.

After experiencing supernatural phenomena, Wataru couldn’t dismiss these myths as mere fairy tales.

“No, I will help her.”

“But, Master…”

“If I ignore a life that can be saved right in front of me, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.”

“You might regret wasting a lot of money.”

“If I’m going to regret it, I don’t want to regret giving up a human life. I’m sorry in advance if my decision causes trouble for you all.”

Mariel’s opposition was probably just a way to test Wataru’s resolve.

Mariel and Aire seemed to accept Wataru’s decision once he had made up his mind.

Both Mariel and Aire had been saved by Wataru in the past.

They must have had a vague idea of how Wataru would decide.

“I’m actually glad that you didn’t make the decision to save someone for money.”

“I will never forget that you helped me retrieve the Great Tiger Ice.”

“Thank you. I’m leaving now. I’m sorry, but you two stay in the car. To be honest, you two are very conspicuous. It’s better if I go alone.”

He hurriedly parked the car, unbuckled his seat belt, applied the emergency brake, and turned off the engine.

After confirming that the car had come to a complete stop, Wataru reached out to Aire.

“Aire, give me the transformation accessories. Hide your head and tail.”

“Okay. That wild horse of a car is stopped now, but be careful.”

Wataru used the transformation accessories to drastically change his appearance.

He took the emergency treatment potion from Mariel and checked its contents.

He got out of the car and rushed to the girl who had been hit.

Since it was a main street, several people had already gathered, but no one reached out to help or tried to rescue her.

On the contrary, some people were taking pictures with their smartphones, and Wataru felt a strong sense of aversion.

He couldn’t help but raise his voice in irritation.

“Stop taking pictures with your phones and call an ambulance right now!”

“Ah, y-yes.”

“You and the others over there, I’ll take care of this. Go see if the person in the car is conscious!”

The men he instructed began to move frantically.

What the hell do they think is more important, human life or social media?

Fighting back his irritation, he rushed over to the girl.

Seeing her being thrown away so violently right in front of him, he felt a strong urge to help her.

“Are you okay?”

“Uu… ah…”

“This is bad… You’ll be okay. I’ll get you help right away. Stay with me.”

The girl was in her late teens or early twenties.

Blood flowed from her head, and her eyes were vacant.

The gaping wound was gruesome, with bright red flesh exposed.

It was unclear if she was faintly responding to his calls or just moaning.

Such a young life with so much potential was about to be lost in a traffic accident.

He was glad he had come to help.

In this state, it might be impossible to get someone who doesn’t know about potions to drink it.

The potion can also be applied to the entire body to take effect.

Wataru quickly opened the lid and poured the potion on the girl.

With force, he poured all the contents onto her.

“It’s okay, you’ll be fine. You still have a lot of life left. It must hurt, but hold on.”

To keep her conscious and to prevent her precious life from being lost before the potion took effect, Wataru called out to her repeatedly.

The effect of the potion was astonishing.

At a speed reminiscent of fast-forwarding through edited images, the wounds quickly healed, returning to their original beautiful skin.

Even the broken bones seemed to be repaired.

There were still traces of blood on her clothes and skin, but otherwise, she looked clean.

However, it seemed that the consciousness and lost blood did not return immediately.

Perhaps the pain had subsided, for she was breathing steadily, but her consciousness remained hazy.

“That’s good,” Wataru said, relaxing his shoulders and taking out a handkerchief to wipe the blood from her head.

There were no more wounds, and her beautiful skin was visible.

“You’ll be fine. Does it hurt anywhere?”

“Ah… ugh… I’m… okay…”

“I think the ambulance will be here soon, so try to stay calm. It might be better if you don’t move your head.”

It was painful to leave the girl who had barely managed to answer, but if he stayed there any longer, it would cause problems.

Aware that the accident would attract attention, Wataru quickly left the scene.

As soon as he got into the car, Mariel and Aire asked him worriedly how she was.

“Is she okay?”

“Probably. There’s nothing more we can do. Let’s get out of here quickly so they don’t investigate.”

“Won’t there be a commotion?”

“I don’t know. I don’t know, but I can’t take care of things after that. Aire, check if anyone is following us.”

“Hmm, someone is watching us right now, but I think we’re okay.”

Aire looked around, checking the situation with her eyes and ears.

More attention was focused on the owner of the car that caused the accident than on Wataru and the others.

From the commotion, he could tell that it seemed to be a case of an elderly driver losing control of his vehicle.

It appears to be a head-on collision involving a vehicle commonly used by elderly drivers, but neither the driver who caused the accident nor the driver of the car that was hit appear to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

Wataru begins to check the car in preparation for leaving.

“Seat belt good, mirrors good! Engine good! Handbrake good!”

“Master, aren’t you in a hurry…?”

“Don’t underestimate my driving skills! There’s no way I can skip any steps!”

“Nishishi, that was kind of cool, but now it’s ruined.”

“Aire! Don’t say anything unnecessary. What would you do if I had an accident?”

“I-I’m sorry!”

Tense and scolding, Wataru’s words made Aire quickly hide her smile and instead look anxious, covering her mouth with her hands.

Wataru might be reenacting the previous serious accident.

Despite his inner turmoil, Wataru slowly finished his preparations and started the car.

The sounds of police and ambulance sirens grew louder in the distance.

At that moment, in his panic, Wataru left the handkerchief in front of the girl.

Whether saving the girl’s life would turn out to be the best or the worst,

No one knew yet.

  1. I wonder which type of deity would be so petty to put hidden restrictions on something granted without any stipulations.

    1. They always claim the stipulations were there, your ancestors agreed to the terms and conditions long ago. That it’s actually your fault for not looking into it, and finding all the fine print carved into the shrine, in a long dead language, from another world even….
